Return to New Bark
Congratulations, you are now the Indigo League Champion! That marks you as the strongest Trainer in all of Johto and Kanto.

-----
After the credits roll, you wind up back home in New Bark. Elm calls shortly after, asking you to visit the lab. Swing by to get the IV, a pass to board the S.S. Aqua in Olivine City. Head to the harbor to set sail for Vermilion City!

Back in New Bark Town
Olivine City
Olivine Port
Enter the Olivine Port building to meet with Professor Oak, who upgrades your Pokédex to the National mode. This makes it possible to challenge the Gym Leaders to a rematch, participate in the Battle Frontier, and encounter wild Pokémon from far-off regions. In addition, Professor Oak's Pokémon Talk now details information regarding Pokémon swarms. Present your IV to the Sailor to gain access to the harbor. As you leave the building, Baoba calls to inform you of the Johto's new Object Arrangement feature.

Congratulations, you are now the Indigo League Champion!  That major accomplishment means that you are the strongest Trainer in all of Johto and Kanto. However, just because the League is behind you, that doesn't mean the game is over.
Fast Ship S.S. Aqua
After the credits roll, you wind up back at your home in New Bark. Head downstairs, and your mom will tell you that Professor Elm has something for you. Swing by the lab to get the List of key items in Generation IV, a pass to board the S.S. Aqua!  Fly off to Olivine, and head to the harbor to catch the ferry to Vermilion City, your first stop in Kanto!
Upon boarding the ship, a frantic old man runs into you. His granddaughter is missing, and he asks for your help before running off. Luckily, there are only so many places where she could be on the ship. Before starting the search, check you your cabin at the east end of the hallway; it has a PC and a cozy bed to rest in, which is important to have with so many Trainers on board.

Olivine Harbor
Enter the harbor and you'll be greeted by Professor Oak, who upgrades your Pokédex to the National mode. This unlocks quite a few new things; tracking the Gym Leaders down for rematches, accessing the Battle Frontier, and wild Hoenn and Sinnoh Pokémon, to name a few. Talk to the sailor to reach the ferry; as you go to exit the building, Baoba calls you, excited about his new Object Arrangement feature at the Johto. Use your Dowsing MCHN to find a Vitamin hidden on the dock, and board the ship.

Fast Ship S.S. Aqua
Upon boarding the ship, you will be nearly trampled by a frenzied old man. His granddaughter is missing, and asks for your help before running off. It's quite a long voyage, so you will have plenty of time to search for the old man's granddaughter before reaching Vermilion City.

Top Floor
Starting with the room to the right of the entrance and moving anticlockwise around the hallway, here are the contents of the cabins:
* This cabin contains a sleeping Sailor. Be careful not to wake him.
* This is your cabin. It has a PC and a cosy bed to heal your Pokémon — good to have with all of these Trainers aboard!
* This cabin belongs to Firebreather Lyle. Enter the cabin to battle him.
* Unoccupied.
* Pokéfan Colin uses this cabin; enter it to battle him. When you have battled him, you can also battle his Twins Meg & Peg in a Double Battle.
* This is the old man's cabin. Take his granddaughter here when you find her.
* Unoccupied.
* This room belongs to Hiker Noland. Enter and he will battle you.

After beating these Trainers, use the stairs located above the entrance to go to the lower floor.

Basement Floor
In the left room, which is the crew's dormitory, you can find Juggler Fritz, who is seasick but still insists on battling you. The room to the right, the crew's mess, contains Sailor Jeff.
In front of the engine room, one of the crew members is on guard duty, and asks you to find his relief for the next shift. Sailor Stanly is sleeping in the cabin next to yours, and when you confront him, he springs awake and challenges you to a battle. Put him in his place, and he'll run off. Head back downstairs, and you'll be free to walk past him, where you'll find Picnicker Debra standing near the ship's engine. Climb the ladder to reach the Captain's quarters.

Captain's Quarters
Upper deck
It is here that the little girl has wandered off to, trying to get the Captain to play with her. When you try to talk to her, she will insist on playing a game of hide-and-seek.
The first cabin to the right contains a sleeping Sailor. Your cabin is located next door, and Firebreather Lyle occupies the cabin across the hall. The fourth cabin on the right side is empty.
Track her down to end her game; you'll find her on the bottom floor, hiding in a dark corner, past the seasick Juggler. Take her back to her grandfather's cabin, and he will give you a Type-enhancing item as thanks, which enhances Steel attacks by 20% (and is also required for Onix and Scyther to evolve).

{| align="center"
The first cabin to the left is occupied by Hiker Noland. The cabin to the left is empty. The cabin across the hall belongs to the worried grandfather, and the fourth cabin on the left side contains Pokéfan Colin and his daughters, Twins Meg & Peg.

The crew's rest area is located to the left of the stairs, while the dining area is located to the right. Beyond that is the engine room. The Sailor on guard duty asks you to find his replacement for the next shift. Head back to the entrance to find Stanly, the snoozing Sailor in the cabin next to yours. He springs awake when you confront him, and challenges you to a battle. Put him in his place, and he runs off. Go back downstairs and you are free to progress past him. Climb the ladder up to the captain's cabin.

With the girl safe and sound, the SS Aqua docks in Vermilion City.
Captain's cabin
In the future, when you travel on the SS Aqua, you will be able to battle a selection of Trainers (which is different depending on the direction of travel) and receive a random type plate from the Captain.
The little girl is with the Captain, safe but bored, and keeps trying to get him to play. When you talk to her, she insists on playing a game of hide-and-seek. You'll find her on the lower deck, in a dark corner past the crew's rest area. Take her back to her grandfather's cabin, and he rewards you with a Type-enhancing item, a power-up for Steel attacks and an essential part of Steelix Scizor evolutions. Just then, the captain announces that the ship has docked in Vermilion Harbor, and passengers may now disembark.

On your way into the city, you'll see Suicune standing on the water just east of the docks!  It runs off as soon as you see it, and Eusine shows up again, talking about seeing a pattern. You can't go east to 11 yet, as a sleeping Snorlax is blocking the trail, as well as the eastern entrance to Diglett's Cave, so head back into the city.
Vermilion City has not changed much over the past three years. A sleeping Snorlax blocks the path to the east, and the old man is still clearing the ground for construction with his Machop. Landmarks include the Pokémon Fan Club and Vermilion Gym.

Surf southeast from near the Gym to reach the Incense (which lets a Chansey produce Happiny eggs) on the sand by the harbor, and check the boat to the north for a Valuable item. The man and his Machop from Generation I are still preparing the land for construction to the north, but Rock Smash one of the rocks to find a hidden Status ailment healing item. There are really only two areas of interest in Vermilion: the Pokémon Fan Club and the Vermilion Gym. Visit the Pokémon Fan Club and talk to the president to get a Vitamin, and then rest your team for the Vermilion Gym if you want to get the Thunder Badge now. Actually, you can challenge the Gyms in Kanto in any order you want, except for Viridian Gym, which you must defeat all other 7 Gyms before challenging.

A Legendary Sighting
As you proceed along the pathway from the harbor, you find Suicune standing on the water to the east. It runs off as soon as you spot it, and Eusine appears again. He talks about noticing a pattern before he leaves as well.
Pokémon Fan Club
Listen to the Chairman's long story about his prized Rapidash, and he gives you a Vitamin for sticking around through the whole thing. Take note of the guy with the Clefairy; it is actually a Battle item that will need to be returned to its owner later.

The Vermilion Gym specializes in Electric, so your Grounds will have the easiest time here. A Rock/Ground or a Steel/Ground Pokémon works wonders here, as they resist almost all of Surge's attacks. Avoid bringing any Water- or Flyings unless they are higher-leveled, or they won't last very long. Lt. Surge's trash can puzzle from three years ago is working again after being disabled in Generation II. When you find the first switch hidden inside a trash can, the second is hidden in the next one. When you flip both switches, the electrical barrier that blocked you from reaching the Gym Leader is deactivated. <br>
The Vermilion Gym specializes in Electric Pokémon, so avoid using Water or Flying Pokémon. Conversely, Ground Pokémon are not only immune to electrical attacks, but their Ground-type attacks inflict serious damage on Electric Pokémon. Lt. Surge has installed two switches, each hidden in a different trash can. When you find the first, the second is always in an adjacent trash can. If you flip the first but not the second, the trap resets. When both switches are flipped, the electrical barrier that separates you from the Gym Leader is disabled.

Lt. Surge shouldn't be too much of a challenge if you've got a strong ground-type. However, his Raichu likes to use Double Team and will become hard to hit in a few turns, so make sure you can OHKO or at least 2HKO it. Look out for Thunder Wave, his Magneton's Supersonic, and his second Electrode's Selfdestruct. Full Heals will be useful here.
Lt. Surge's Raichu tends to use Double Team, which can quickly make it difficult to hit. Raichu and one of his Electrode can paralyze their target with Thunder Wave, so bring along a few Status ailment healing items. Take care when facing his Magneton; its Mirror Shot attack, a Steel move, will deal serious damage to Rock Pokémon like Geodude or Onix. Most of his Pokémon have the Static Ability, so avoid using physical moves.

This is the Bulbapedia walkthrough for Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.
These pages follow the remade Nintendo DS iteration, not Pokémon Gold and Silver. The guide for those games can be found here.

Return to New Bark

Congratulations, you are now the Indigo League Champion! That marks you as the strongest Trainer in all of Johto and Kanto.

After the credits roll, you wind up back home in New Bark. Elm calls shortly after, asking you to visit the lab. Swing by to get the S.S. Ticket, a pass to board the S.S. Aqua in Olivine City. Head to the harbor to set sail for Vermilion City!

Present your S.S. Ticket to the Sailor to gain access to the harbor. As you leave the building, Baoba calls to inform you of the Safari Zone's new Object Arrangement feature.

Fast Ship S.S. Aqua

S.S. Aqua, 1F
S.S. Aqua, B1F

Upper deck

The first cabin to the right contains a sleeping Sailor. Your cabin is located next door, and Firebreather Lyle occupies the cabin across the hall. The fourth cabin on the right side is empty.

The first cabin to the left is occupied by Hiker Noland. The cabin to the left is empty. The cabin across the hall belongs to the worried grandfather, and the fourth cabin on the left side contains Pokéfan Colin and his daughters, Twins Meg & Peg.

Lower deck

The crew's rest area is located to the left of the stairs, while the dining area is located to the right. Beyond that is the engine room. The Sailor on guard duty asks you to find his replacement for the next shift. Head back to the entrance to find Stanly, the snoozing Sailor in the cabin next to yours. He springs awake when you confront him, and challenges you to a battle. Put him in his place, and he runs off. Go back downstairs and you are free to progress past him. Climb the ladder up to the captain's cabin.

Captain's cabin

The little girl is with the Captain, safe but bored, and keeps trying to get him to play. When you talk to her, she insists on playing a game of hide-and-seek. You'll find her on the lower deck, in a dark corner past the crew's rest area. Take her back to her grandfather's cabin, and he rewards you with a Metal Coat, a power-up for Steel-type attacks and an essential part of certain trade evolutions. Just then, the captain announces that the ship has docked in Vermilion Harbor, and passengers may now disembark.

Vermilion City

Vermilion City

Vermilion City has not changed much over the past three years. A sleeping Snorlax blocks the path to the east, and the old man is still clearing the ground for construction with his Machop. Landmarks include the Pokémon Fan Club and Vermilion Gym.

A Legendary Sighting

As you proceed along the pathway from the harbor, you find Suicune standing on the water to the east. It runs off as soon as you spot it, and Eusine appears again. He talks about noticing a pattern before he leaves as well.

Pokémon Fan Club

Listen to the Chairman's long story about his prized Rapidash, and he gives you a Rare Candy for sticking around through the whole thing. Take note of the guy with the Clefairy; it is actually a Poké Doll that will need to be returned to its owner later.

Vermilion Gym

Vermilion Gym

Vermilion City Pokémon Gym
Leader: Lt. Surge

The Lightning American

The Vermilion Gym specializes in Electric-type Pokémon, so avoid using Water or Flying Pokémon.

Lt. Surge's Raichu tends to use Double Team, which can quickly make it difficult to hit. Raichu and one of his Electrode can paralyze their target with Thunder Wave, so bring along a few Parlyz Heals. Take care when facing his Magneton; its Mirror Shot attack, a Steel-type move, will deal serious damage to Rock Pokémon like Geodude or Onix. Most of his Pokémon have the Static Ability, so avoid using physical moves.

The Thunder Badge

Defeated, Lt. Surge awards you the Thunder Badge, and hands out TM34 (Shock Wave) as a prize.
