Chikorita (Japanese: チコリータ Chicorita) is a Grass-type Pokémon. Along with Cyndaquil and Totodile, it is one of the three starter Pokémon available at the beginning of the Generation II games. It is also available in Pokémon Emerald as an award for catching the first 200 Pokémon in the Hoenn Pokédex.
Chikorita comes with the Ability Overgrow, which increases the power of Grass-type attacks by 50% once the Pokémon has less than one-third of its maximum HP.
Chikorita evolves into Bayleef starting at Level 16, then into Meganium starting at Level 32.
Biology
Physiology
Chikorita is a small Pokémon which vaguely resembles a dinosaur. It is primarily a pale leaf green color with large red eyes. Its most distinguishing feature is the large leaf on the top of its head, which is usually longer than the rest of its body. It has a "necklace" of small green buds around its neck.
Gender differences
None.
Special abilities
Chikorita can spawn vines from its neck and create leaves from the big leaf on its head. Like many Grass-type Pokémon its foliage emits a sweet odor that has calming properties. This leaf also has the ability to check the temperature and humidity of the surrounding air.
Behavior
Chikorita, like many grass Pokémon, is very docile. It prefers to avoid fights by using the aromatherapeutic properties of the large leaf on its head. It spends most of its time sunbathing, although it is unclear if this is because it needs to photosynthesize, or if it is because Chikorita is coldblooded and needs to warm itself up. It appears to be sensitive to changes in its environment, and can use the leaf on its head to help purify the air around it.
Habitat
Chikorita are a rare Pokémon mostly found in large open plains with other Chikorita, Bayleef, and Meganium or small forests. It prefers warm temperatures.

Vincent received a Chikorita as his starter Pokémon as seen in the opening of The Legend of Thunder.
Silver also owns a Chikorita, as seen in The Search for the Legend. it behaves much in the same way to him as Pikachu does to Ash, including traveling on his shoulder.

Trivia
- The Chikorita family is the only evolution family of a starter Pokémon to not have their names changed for the English release.
- In the anime, Chikorita has had the most trainers out of the Johto starters. It has been trained by Ash, Casey, Vincent, and Silver. However, Ash is the only one who didn't receive Chikorita as a starter. Currently it is unknown if Chikorita was Silver's starter Pokémon. Most guess not because of Silver's age.
Origin
Chikorita has similarities to sauropods.
Name origin
Chikorita's name is derived from chicory, a flowering plant and -ita the feminine form of the Spanish suffix for something small or young.
