Rain Dance | Drizzle Primordial Sea |
Rain (Japanese: 雨 Rain) is a weather condition introduced in battle in Generation II. It was introduced in the overworld in Generation III.
It will last for five turns if created using Drizzle (Generation VI only) or Rain Dance, or eight if created while holding a Damp Rock. If created using Drizzle (prior to Generation VI) or encountered in the overworld, it will last until replaced.
There is also a variation of rain called heavy rain (Japanese: 強い雨 heavy rain). Heavy rain can be encountered in the overworld or created using Primordial Sea; if the latter, it lasts as long as its summoner is in battle, unless replaced by extremely harsh sunlight or strong winds.

After Kyogre is awakened but before battling it |
Effects
In battle
- Increases the power of Water-type moves by 50%.
- Decreases the power of Fire-type moves by 50%.
- From Generation V onward, allows Thunder and Hurricane to bypass accuracy check.
- Prior to Generation V, makes Thunder's accuracy 100%.
- In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, allows Thunder to hit through Protect and Detect 30% of the time.
- Activates the following Abilities: Dry Skin, Forecast, Hydration, Rain Dish, Swift Swim.
- Causes Forecast to change Castform to its Rainy Form.
- Changes Weather Ball to a Water-type move and doubles its power.
- Causes Solar Beam to deal only half its normal damage.
- Causes Moonlight, Synthesis, and Morning Sun to recover ¼ of max HP (half the normal amount in Generation II).
- In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, prevents Pokémon from exploding.
Heavy rain
- Causes Fire-type moves to fail if used (including moves that change type, if they would be Fire-type).
- If a Pokémon affected by Powder uses a Fire-type move, it will take damage from Powder.
- If a Pokémon attempts to use Natural Gift while holding a Berry that makes the move Fire-type, the Berry is not consumed.
- If a frozen Pokémon attempts to use a Fire-type move that would thaw itself (such as Flame Wheel), it will still thaw itself before the move fails.
- Causes the moves Sunny Day, Rain Dance, Sandstorm, and Hail to fail if used. This cannot be subverted even with Cloud Nine or Air Lock.
- If a Pokémon affected by Powder uses Sunny Day, it will take damage from Powder.
- Causes the Abilities Drought, Drizzle, Sand Stream, and Snow Warning to fail. This cannot be subverted even with Cloud Nine or Air Lock.
Outside of battle
Sliggoo will evolve into Goodra when leveled up while it is raining in the overworld.
From Pokémon Diamond and Pearl to Pokémon X and Y, Sweet Scent and Honey will fail if it is raining in the area, or if any other weather condition is present. In the Generation III games and Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Sweet Scent and Honey are unaffected by the weather.
Variations
Normal rain
Rain falls. Found in all places where rain is found on the field.
Strong rain
Rains falls heavily, at a lower angle than normal rain. It is found occasionally on Route 212.
The difference from normal rain is purely aesthetic.
Heavy rain
Rain falls heavily and chaotically, with strong winds whipping through the air. This variation only occurs in the field when Kyogre awakens in Pokémon Alpha Sapphire.
Thunderstorm
Rain falls heavily, much like strong rain does, and occasionally lightning will strike and thunder will rumble. It is found on Route 119 as part of the four-day weather cycle of rain, thunderstorm, rain, and clear. It can be found on Route 212 on occasion. It happens on predetermined days, such as the anniversaries of the game's release in each country. It also appeared on St. Patrick's Day; February 29, 2008; and Christmas Day (December 25). In Pokémon White, after the player obtains the Legend Badge, a thunderstorm will occur on Route 7, where the player may meet Thundurus. After the player has met Thundurus, thunderstorms will occur on whatever route Thundurus is currently roaming on.
Hurricane
Rain falls heavily, although at a normal angle, and periodically strong gusts of wind will blow. It is only found in Pokémon Black. After the player obtains the Legend Badge, a hurricane will occur on Route 7, where the player may meet Tornadus. After the player has met Tornadus, hurricanes will occur on whatever route Tornadus is roaming on.

Like in the real world, rain is quite common, appearing in many episodes. Most of these occasions are not caused by Rain Dance or Drizzle. The first appearance of rain in the anime was in the first episode, Pokémon - I Choose You!. The first time it has appeared caused by a Pokémon was in A Shadow of a Drought.
