Water route
A sea route or water route (Japanese: 水道 water route), is a route that crosses a body of water, and may be made up nearly entirely of water, with only a few islands. Sea routes typically begin to appear late in the game.
Sea routes usually require the use of the HM field move Surf for traversal, or in later games, the Poké Ride Lapras Paddle or Sharpedo JetSMUSUM, the Secret Technique Sea SkimPE or the Pokétch's Hidden Moves AppBDSP. In games starting from Generation VIII (excluding remakes), there are no specific water routes, with bodies of water present directly in the open world setting.
Characteristics
Sea routes are often among the longest routes in the games, often densely-populated with Swimmers who use Water-type Pokémon. Unlike land routes, wild Pokémon can attack the player on sea routes at any time. Typically, Tentacool and Tentacruel are common sights.
Some sea routes in Johto have whirlpools blocking the way, while some in Hoenn have spots where it is deep enough to dive underwater. Certain sea routes also contain currents which force the player to move in a single direction.
List of sea routes
The following is a list of sea routes in the Pokémon world. This list includes those routes which are numbered sequentially in a region as well as those which do not have numbers, but names instead, and help to link between numbered routes.
