Location of Sunyshore City in Sinnoh.

Sunyshore City (Japanese: ナギサシティ Nagisa City) is a city in the Sinnoh region, and the location of the region's final Pokémon Gym. Sunyshore City is known as a major port town and the gateway to Sinnoh's Pokémon League. It is situated on a narrow spit of land bordered by the sea and the mountains. To make up for the lack of space, the city built solar panels to use for power and roads. There are suspended roads throughout the city that collect solar energy to power the city.

Jasmine, Olivine City's Gym Leader, is seen in this city. She states that Sunyshore reminds her of home, because they both are by the sea, and both have a rather large lighthouse. After beating Volkner, Jasmine will give the player HM07 (Waterfall).

Until DialgaDBD, PalkiaPSP, or GiratinaPt has been battled, the city experiences a massive blackout caused by Volkner's extensive Gym renovations. Due to this, a man in Valor Lakefront prevents anyone from entering Route 222, the only way to Sunyshore from the rest of Sinnoh.

Slogan

Sunyshore Market

Main article: Sunyshore Market
Sunyshore Market

The Sunyshore Market is a small building located in Sunyshore City. It is located in the center of Sunyshore City, just north of the Poké Mart, by the beach. The Sunyshore Market is one of the world's largest Seal centers. It is well known for its big selection of Seals from around the world. The building is always stacked with boxes of products. There are four desks and only three are occupied, though the player can only purchase items from the Seal shop by the man at the back of the room. The man at the stand will sell the player Poké Ball Seals. To buy these Seals, the player first must have obtained the Seal Case from the house just west of the Solaceon Ruins. The Seals he sells change every day. There is also a lady on the left to the entrance at the market giving away an Effort Ribbon to certain Pokémon, that have 510 Effort values.

Walkway

This city is also famous for its walkway, which is necessary for traveling around the city.

Vista Lighthouse

Vista Lighthouse
Main article: Vista Lighthouse

The Vista Lighthouse can be found in the far southeastern corner of Sunyshore City. While not as spectacular as the lighthouse in Johto, consisting only of an elevator and an observation deck, it has a similarity in that it is the location in which the city's Gym Leader, Volkner, is found before appearing in the Pokémon Gym. The player can see the Sinnoh Pokémon League building if they look into the binoculars. Volkner, unlike Jasmine, however, is not caring for an ailing Pokémon, merely contemplating remaining a Gym Leader or going to the Pokémon League to challenge the Elite Four, since he has had no worthy challengers for a while.

Julia

There is also a lonely woman named Julia who will hand out seven Ribbons, one for each day of the week. The Ribbons she hands out differ according to her mood, which changes every day. The Ribbons she hands out are as follows:

Day Ribbon Description
Monday Alert Ribbon VIII.png Alert Ribbon A Ribbon for recalling an invigorating event that created life energy.
Tuesday Shock Ribbon VIII.png Shock Ribbon A Ribbon for recalling a thrilling event that made life more exciting.
Wednesday Downcast Ribbon VIII.png Downcast Ribbon A Ribbon for recalling feelings of sadness that added spice to life.
Thursday Careless Ribbon VIII.png Careless Ribbon A Ribbon for recalling a careless error that helped steer life decisions.
Friday Relax Ribbon VIII.png Relax Ribbon A Ribbon for recalling a refreshing event that added sparkle to life.
Saturday Snooze Ribbon VIII.png Snooze Ribbon A Ribbon for recalling a deep slumber that made life soothing.
Sunday Smile Ribbon VIII.png Smile Ribbon A Ribbon for recalling that smiles enrich the quality of life.

Pokétch developer

In the house only reachable by Rock Climb, a lone scientist has been given the okay by the Pokétch Company to develop original Pokétch applications. If he is shown a Pokémon with one of three Natures, he will give away one of three different applications.

Pokémon Rock

Pokémon Rock is a giant rock formation found on the east side of the city. Pokémon Rock is one of the city's famous landmarks, famous for its strange shape that resembles a MunchlaxDPPt/SnorlaxBDSP standingDPPt/sittingBDSP in the bay.

Sunyshore Gym

Main article: Sunyshore Gym

The Sunyshore Gym is the official Gym of Sunyshore City. It is based on Electric-type Pokémon. The Gym Leader is Volkner. Trainers who defeat him receive the Beacon Badge. The Sunyshore Gym is a three-room Gym where the main floor is made up of gigantic gears and clockwork suspending platforms operated by buttons. To get through, Trainers need to rotate the platforms in a correct order to create a path. The Gym has exposed dynamos that use up a large amount of electrical power, prompting the town to renovate the pathways into solar energy collectors. For defeating Volkner, Trainers receive the Beacon Badge, TM57 (Charge Beam), and the ability to use Waterfall outside of battle.

Sunyshore City Lighthouse
Sunyshore City in the animated series

Ash and his friends first arrived in Sunyshore City in Flint Sparks the Fire!, where Ash visited the Sunyshore Gym, only to find the Gym was handing out free Badges. Angered by this, Ash then met Flint of the Elite Four, who brought him to the disenchanted Volkner. Despite Ash personally requesting a Gym battle, Volkner still refused to battle him. Flint decided to battle Ash, and they were able to renew the spark for battling within Volkner with their confrontation.

In The Fleeing Tower of Sunyshore!, as Ash and Volkner were starting their Gym battle, the electricity was cut off unexpectedly. They soon realized that this was due to Team Rocket stealing Sunyshore Tower, the city's main source of electricity. Ash and Volkner successfully fought off Team Rocket, but Ash's Gym battle had to be postponed as the tower and the Gym needed repairs following the incident. Ash and his friends decided to take this opportunity to head to Valor Lakefront for the Sinnoh Grand Festival.

Ash returned to Sunyshore City for his Gym battle in The Eighth Wonder of the Sinnoh World!. Following a fierce confrontation, during which Ash's Infernape learned to control Blaze for the first time, he earned himself the Beacon Badge. In Four Roads Diverged in a Pokémon Port!, Ash missed the boat to Lily of the Valley Island and stayed in Sunyshore City, only to meet Kenny, Jasmine, and Flint. Jasmine, who was on a journey of discovery, challenged Flint to a battle but lost, while Ash battled Kenny to decide who Dawn should travel with from now on. Ash and his friends later left for the Sinnoh League.

Ash returned to Sunyshore City once again in Ultra Exciting from the Shocking Start!, this time with Goh, to participate in a World Coronation Series Ultra Class battle against Volkner at the Sunyshore Gym. After a gruelling match, Ash was able to defeat Volkner once again and increase his ranking.

In The Fiery Road to Mastership!, Volkner and Flint were seen watching Cynthia's Masters Eight Tournament battle against Iris in Sunyshore City.

Like the games, Sunyshore is shown to be a city built around solar energy, with numerous solar panels and Sunyshore Tower powering various technological machines in the city. Many escalators and roads made up of moving tiles are found throughout the city, and a lighthouse is also situated at the city's shore. Volkner is responsible for the city's now shining vision, however in the past the city was plagued by criminal gangs and Pokémon poachers.

Diamond & Pearl arc

Sunyshore City first appeared in Encountering Elekid, where the manager of Valley Windworks had arrived to investigate the blackout that was troubling the city. He traced the source of the problem to the Sunyshore Gym, where Volkner had made renovations out of boredom, with the result that the new systems he had installed in the Gym were now draining most of the city's electricity. Before the manager could properly berate Volkner of his irresponsible behavior, the Sunyshore Gym Leader received a call from Byron to go train with Maylene, Candice, and Platinum at the Spring Path.

Platinum arc

Sunyshore City appeared again in The Final Dimensional Duel X and XI, where Charon escaped the Distortion World through a portal created by Giratina, only for him and Giratina to be struck by a Draco Meteor from Cynthia's Garchomp immediately upon exiting the portal. Cynthia had predicted that Giratina would appear in Sunyshore City, as it was a place constantly bathing in sunlight, which Giratina, who had lived an eternity in a dark world, would want.

After everyone else who had been involved in the final battle in the Distortion World had come through the portal as well, Cyrus told his Commanders that he was hereby disbanding Team Galactic. He then departed with Saturn, Mars, and Jupiter, while Charon was arrested by Looker. Before Looker could go after the other Commanders, however, he received a call from the International Police HQ, ordering him to depart to the Unova region at once to investigate the Seven Sages. Before his departure, he gave Diamond and Pearl a Manaphy Egg he had been entrusted with during an earlier mission in Fiore.

Trivia

  • Sunyshore City is Cyrus's hometown.
  • The layout of the city is very similar to Olivine City with exits to the north and west of the city, two houses in the northeastern corner, Gym in the northwestern corner and a lighthouse in the southeastern corner.
    • This city is also similar to Vermilion City in Kanto. Both's Gym Leaders use Electric-type Pokémon, and both border the sea.
      • Both have misspelled names where a double letter is changed into a single letter.
  • As Jasmine leaves the player with HM07, she walks back to the shore saying "...Um... I... I don't know how I should say this, but good luck." This is the same phrase she gives when she's defeated at the Olivine Gym.
