Location of Veilstone City in Sinnoh.

Veilstone City (Japanese: トバリシティ Tobari City) is a city in eastern Sinnoh. It is the eighth largest city in the Pokémon world. It is situated near the sea to the north, with Route 214 and Pastoria City to the south, and Route 215 to the west. It houses Maylene, the Veilstone City Gym Leader, along with the headquarters for Team Galactic.

Veilstone is carved out of steep and rocky mountains, giving the city rock walls that project a cold atmosphere. It is fairly isolated and has little contact with other cities. Team Galactic also constructed the Galactic Warehouse and their headquarters, the Galactic Veilstone Building there. This city is also home to the Sinnoh region's department store. Veilstone is famous for its stones, including its meteorites, which can change Deoxys between its many forms.

Places of interest

Veilstone Department Store

Main article: Veilstone Department Store

The Veilstone Department Store is located in the middle of Veilstone City, west of the Pokémon Center. It is the main shopping district in the city. Veilstone lacks a regular Poké Mart, but its department store sells all the usual items and more. This department store is similar to the Celadon Department Store, the Goldenrod Department Store, and the Lilycove Department Store. The store offers a wide variety of items on its five floors. When players enter the store, there is a woman to the left of the entrance who will give away a mask to be put in the Fashion Case. The people at the reception counter sell items commonly found in Poké Marts. On the second floor a man behind the counter will give away the Counter Pokétch app. Battle items and vitamins are sold here as well. TMs are sold on the third floor, while Secret Base decorations are sold on the fourth floor. Inexpensive healing items, Lemonade, Soda Pop, and Fresh Water, can be bought on the top floor from vending machines. A basement floor, added in Pokémon Platinum, sells Poffins, Berries, and Lava Cookies.

Galactic Veilstone Building

Team Galactic HQ in Pokémon Platinum
Main article: Team Galactic HQ

The Galactic Veilstone Building is a front for what is really the Team Galactic HQ. The building is a large, multi-story building in northern Veilstone City. Along with the Team Galactic Eterna Building, it is one of the main centers for Team Galactic's operations. It housed the Legendary Pokémon Uxie, Azelf, and Mesprit for a brief time.

At first, the player can only roam the lobby of the first floor of the building. A locked door in the lobby can only be opened with the Galactic Key. A portion of the headquarters can also be accessed via an underground passageway behind a locked door in the Galactic Warehouse. On the top floor of the headquarters, the player will find and battle Cyrus, who gives away a Master Ball on his defeat.

Veilstone Game Corner

Main article: Veilstone Game Corner

The Veilstone Game Corner is located in the southern Veilstone City near the Gym. The woman behind the counter to the left of the slots sells Coins to the player: 50 coins for $1000, or 500 coins for $10000. There are sixteen slot machines in the Game Corner, with four of them having people already seated at them. Each spin of the machine takes 3 coins, which are inserted by pressing the X button. Reels will start spinning either when the D-pad is pressed down or the X button is pressed again. Y stops the left reel, B stops the middle, and A stops the right. The Bonus Round occurs when a Clefairy pops out of the Poké Ball on the touch screen. Once the Clefairy appears, players must continue spinning the reels until they get a 100-coin bonus. The odds of getting the bonus seem to improve if the slots are activated to the beat of Clefairy's clapping. Prizes are sold in the house to the right of the Game Corner.

In Generation VIII, the Game Corner is replaced by the Metronome Style Shop.

Metronome Style Shop

The Metronome Style Shop
Main article: Style (Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl)

In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, the Metronome Style Shop replaces the Veilstone Game Corner. The player can purchase clothing and change their outfit here. The side building houses a simple storage.

Galactic Warehouse

Main article: Team Galactic HQ

The Galactic Warehouse is a small storage facility found on the northwest side of Veilstone City. The warehouse is connected to the Team Galactic HQ by an underground passageway behind a locked door. The door can only be opened with the Storage Key. In Diamond and Pearl, one Team Galactic Grunt stays here, keeping his guard status throughout the game. In Platinum, Looker stays behind after the player and Lucas/Dawn beat the Grunts and getting the Pokédex back. HM02 (Fly) can be found here along with a rare Dusk Stone.

Massage Girl

The Massage Girl is a Pokémon groomer who lives in southern Veilstone City, in the house nearest the Gym. Once a day, the Massage Girl massages the player's Pokémon for free and finds Accessories for dressing up in Pokémon Contests. Massages make the massaged Pokémon friendlier. If a Pokémon's friendship becomes 200 or greater, she will say "<name> looks dreamily content..."

The Massage Girl lives with her brother and a Pachirisu. Her boyfriend is the Scarf Guy in Pastoria City, whom she keeps in contact with through mail, which she lets Pokémon deliver.

These are the Accessories she can find.

Gift Pokémon

In Pokémon Platinum, the man in the house directly behind the Pokémon Center will offer the player a Porygon that he found.

Meteorites

Meteorites in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Four meteorites can be seen on the east side of Veilstone City. If the player has any Deoxys in their party, they will change form when the meteorites are inspected.

Prize Exchange

A man in the Prize Exchange will tell the player what type Hidden Power will act as for any Pokémon he is shown.

Veilstone Gym

Main article: Veilstone Gym

The Veilstone Gym is the official Gym of Veilstone City. It is based on Fighting-type Pokémon. The Gym Leader is Maylene. Trainers who defeat her receive the Cobble Badge and TM60 (Drain Punch).

Demographics

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl

The population of Veilstone City is 77 people, only ten people behind Jubilife City, making it the third largest city in Sinnoh.

Pokémon Platinum

The population of Veilstone City increased to 82 people, making it the second largest city in Sinnoh.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

The population of Veilstone City is 70, not including members of Team Galactic. The reduction in population comes about from the removal of the Game Corner.

Veilstone City in the animated series

In the animated series, Veilstone City is said to have been built around the meteorites that are situated near the center of the city, as opposed to its edge, as in the games.

Veilstone City first appeared in Lost Leader Strategy!, where Ash and his friends met up with Maylene, the local Gym Leader, and Reggie, Paul's brother a Pokémon Breeder who looks after Paul's Pokémon. It was revealed that Paul had challenged Maylene to a Gym battle and defeated her easily, mocking her for being weak. This left Maylene very upset and made her doubt herself, something which angered her Lucario and worried her assistant Connally. Dawn, coming from two consecutive losses in the Performance Stage of the Hearthome City and Solaceon Town Pokémon Contests, related to Maylene's doubts and fears. The two became friends and spent an afternoon chatting about their insecurities. Meanwhile, Ash and Brock went to Reggie's house, where Ash had a battle with Reggie and won. At the end of the day, Dawn surprised her friends by announcing her intention of challenging Maylene to an official Gym battle.

In Crossing the Battle Line!, Reggie taught Ash's Staravia the move Brave Bird and Dawn battled Maylene at the Veilstone Gym. Despite making use of her Contest Battle techniques to confuse Maylene, Dawn was unable to defeat her. However, Maylene thanked Dawn for helping her and then accepted Ash's request for a Gym battle, which took place in A Triple Fighting Chance!. Ash and Maylene's battle ended in a draw, but Maylene decided to give Ash the Cobble Badge, as she recognized his skills as a Trainer.

In Enter Galactic!, Reggie led the group to a field full of ancient meteorites that are considered the guardians of the city. Saturn, one of Team Galactic's Commanders, arrived in Veilstone City and, together with several Team Galactic Grunts, attempted to steal the meteorites. They sent magnetic waves from the Galactic Veilstone Building, disrupting everything from the communications grid to the medical equipment at the Pokémon Center, to operate without being noticed. While Ash, Dawn, Brock, Reggie, and Maylene managed to save some of the meteorites, Team Galactic still managed to get away with enough to begin the creation of the Red Chain. In The Battle Finale of Legend!, Team Galactic revealed that the Veilstone meteorites were used to create the Red Chain because they contain the power of "the Original One".

Veilstone City is the hometown of Paul and Reggie. In I Choose You!, which is set in a timeline separate from the main series, it is the hometown of Sorrel.

Diamond & Pearl arc

Veilstone City first appeared in Magnificent Meditite & Really Riolu I, where Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum arrived there after being detoured from their intended path towards Mount Coronet due to a mass of Psyduck blocking off Route 210. Becoming addicted to the slot machines after mistaking the Veilstone Game Corner for a hotel, Platinum had to be dragged away from them by Diamond and Pearl. Diamond exchanged the Coins Platinum had won for a Zoom Lens, which she tested out with Pearl's Monferno, Chimler. The test attack almost hit Maylene, attracting her attention. Having overheard a group of Trainers wanting to get an accuracy-raising item in preparation for challenging her, Maylene mistook the Pokédex holders as said Trainers and told them she'd accept their challenge, surprising them with the knowledge that she was the local Gym Leader.

In Magnificent Meditite & Really Riolu II, Platinum challenged Maylene at the Veilstone Gym and defeated her, earning herself the Cobble Badge. While retrieving the Pokédex that Platinum had accidentally forgotten at the Game Corner, Diamond ran into Team Galactic, who attempted to steal it and gave chase when Diamond ran away with it. As Pearl and Platinum tried to find Diamond, Platinum was taken away by her supposed-to-be bodyguards Paka and Uji, who knocked her unconscious and hid her in the Veilstone Department Store before joining Diamond and Pearl in battling Team Galactic outside. The Twinleaf Town youths were shocked to learn that Platinum wasn't their travel guide, like they had thought, but the daughter of the House of Berlitz, the richest family in Sinnoh.

While Diamond, Pearl, Paka, and Uji managed to defeat the Team Galactic Grunts chasing her, Paka and Uji were afterwards struck by an experimental energy ray fired at them by Saturn from the Team Galactic HQ. Before disappearing to another dimension, Paka and Uji asked Diamond and Pearl to protect Platinum on their behalf.

In Halting Honchkrow, Pearl broke through a blockade that Team Galactic had arranged on Route 214, entering Veilstone City and storming into the Team Galactic HQ to help save the lake guardians, along with Diamond, who had arrived at the HQ before, and Platinum. While the Pokédex holders focused on freeing the lake guardians and battling the Advanced level Grunt, Cynthia also arrived at the HQ, only to be confronted by Cyrus. The two battled, but Cyrus was eventually able to escape after Cynthia's imperfected Draco Meteor failed to finish him off. Meanwhile, the lake guardians were freed before the second Red Chain could be created, forcing Cyrus to resort to using an artificial copy as he headed to the Spear Pillar. Cynthia, meanwhile, retrieved the Pokédex holders and headed after Cyrus with them.

Platinum arc

In The Final Dimensional Duel I, Cynthia and her grandmother were at Veilstone City. Cynthia was scolded for her reckless use of Draco Meteor, as she had not mastered it yet. Cynthia's grandmother revealed that the Veilstone meteorites were actually brought down by her when she practiced Draco Meteor in her youth, and started training with her granddaughter in order for her to master the move.

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Adventure!

Veilstone City first appeared in Dialga's Secret Keys, where Hareta was seen defeating Maylene at her Gym.

Hareta and Mitsumi visited Veilstone City in Deoxys, The Phantom Pokémon! (Part 1) and (Part 2). Hareta helped to protect a Deoxys from Team Galactic, while Mitsumi entered a losing streak at the Veilstone Game Corner and refused to leave until she'd won something.

In Team Galactic's Ultimate Warrior, Hareta arrived at the Team Galactic HQ in order to save the lake guardians. However, he was confronted and challenged by Mitsumi, whom Cyrus had blackmailed into returning to serve Team Galactic. While Hareta managed to defeat Mitsumi and free the lake guardians, Cyrus was still able to complete the Red Chain, and ordered the HQ to be destroyed in order to protect Team Galactic's secrets. Hareta and Mitsumi were saved from the collapsing building by Jun.

In Hareta's Excellent New Partner...Minun?!, Hareta's father, Kaisei, was revealed to be kept at the reconstructed Team Galactic HQ. In Charon Must Be Stopped!, Hareta, Mitsumi, Jun, and Koya stormed the HQ in order to save Kaisei, whom Charon was holding as a prisoner in order to find out how to get to the Distortion World. After Kaisei had told him how to do so, Charon left the HQ and headed to Turnback Cave with him.

Trivia

  • On the way to Veilstone Gym, the player will run into Professor Rowan's assistant. If the player is playing as Lucas, Dawn will respond that she has been shopping at the department store. Conversely, if the player is playing as Dawn, Lucas will respond that he has been playing at the Game Corner.
  • In the Japanese version of Pokémon Platinum, there is an NPC who speaks to the player in English. He is next to the pillar where Rock Climb can be used. In the English version, the NPC speaks in French instead. In the Spanish version, he once again speaks in English. He basically asks whether the player likes Pokémon or not and responds positively or negatively, based on whether the player says "yes" or "no". In the English versions, if the player says "Yes," he says in French, "Me too! It's great!", and if the player says "No," he says, "I cannot believe you... one only has to look at you!"
  • The clown that gives the player the Coin Case says the famous Internet phrase, "A winner is you," provided that the player answers correctly to his question.
  • Much like the shop in Two Island, the Veilstone Department Store's basement has Rage Candy Bars for sale. Like in the Sevii Islands, the shop is completely sold out, and the item cannot be bought.
    • The mention of this item in both games fueled much speculation of eventual remakes of Pokémon Gold and Silver, where it was originally introduced. This has come true with Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, though, as the Rage Candy Bar is not programmed into its predecessors, it appears as a Key Item to be traded for TM64 to an NPC in the underground path between Route 5 and 6.
  • Two important NPCs appear in Veilstone City post-Elite Four in Pokémon Platinum. Professor Rowan will appear in the basement floor of the department store, while Looker will appear in the Game Corner (after the Stark Mountain story arc).
  • Veilstone City is similar to Goldenrod City in Johto in several aspects.
  • Veilstone City also has many similarities to Celadon City in Kanto.
  • In Pokémon Platinum, when the player walks into the gate leading to Route 215 from Veilstone City, activates the Bicycle and rides onto Route 215, the rain audio will play for a second and then end as the route shows up on the screen. The rain itself will show up, however. Accessing the Bag or entering a battle ends this effect. This does not work in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, as the player cannot ride the Bicycle in gates in these games.
  • In-universe, Veilstone City appears to be named after Veilstone Cape.
