Lugia (Japanese: ルギア Lugia, German, French: Lugia, Korean: 루기아 Lugia) is a legendary Psychic/Flying-type Pokémon. It is often considered to be closely related to Ho-oh, even sometimes as its polar opposite, represented by silver as Ho-oh is represented by gold, and "guardian of the seas" as Ho-oh is "guardian of the skies".
In Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Pokémon Crystal, it appears in the deepest cavern of the Whirl Islands under the ocean floor, when the games' hero/heroine enters with a Silver Wing, one of its feathers. However, the means of obtaining the Silver Wing differs between the three versions.
In Pokémon FireRed, LeafGreen, and Pokémon Emerald, Lugia is encountered in Navel Rock, a barren rock in the center of the Sevii Islands, along with Ho-oh. To reach Naval Rock via a Seagallop Ferry, one must have the Mysticticket, a promotional item.
Three Lugia have appeared in the anime: a large Lugia from the second movie near Shamouti Island in the Orange Islands, and a mother Lugia and its child Lugia "Silver" in Silver Rock Isle in the Whirl Islands. In both cases a human has attempted to capture them: Jirarudan attempted to capture the large Lugia for himself, inadvertently threatening the world's balance in the process; and Dr. Nanba, attempting to capture both the mother Lugia and Silver for Giovanni. Both were foiled by Ash and his friends.
Lugia comes with the Ability Pressure, which causes the foe to use two PP instead of one each time it uses a move.
Lugia does not evolve, and no Pokémon evolves into it.
Name origin
May come from luteium, a silverish element. Possibly also lugeo, meaning to lie dormant, alluding to the way Lugia lies at the bottom of the sea. The Lu- may come from luna, meaning moon.
