Brassius (Japanese: コルサ Colza) is an artist who is the Gym Leader of Artazon's Gym, known officially as the Artazon Gym. He specializes in Grass-type Pokémon. He hands out the Grass Badge to Trainers who defeat him.

In the core series games

Brassius is one of the Gym Leaders of the Paldea region, and is also an artist. He treats battles as an artform and tests the aesthetic sensibilities of those who challenge his Gym. He is always busy with a new project when he's not battling, inspired by his surroundings.

In addition to the Gym Badge, Brassius gives out TM020 (Trailblaze) after defeating him.

He is close friends with Hassel, the art teacher at the academy in Mesagoza. Hassel helped inspire Brassius's most remarkable artwork called "Surrendering Sunflora", a statue installation spread around the town of Artazon depicting Sunflora with somber expressions. Amongst art connoisseurs, the meaning of "Surrendering Sunflora" is debated.[1] In truth, at the time of the creation of "Surrendering Sunflora", Brassius was deathly ill, and he had given up all hope, even prepared to give up being an artist if "Surrendering Sunflora" didn't gain proper recognition. Despite feeling his worst, Hassel was there to encourage him, which gave Brassius the strength to start the project in the first place. Whether this event took place while he was a Gym Leader is unknown.

Another installment around Artazon by Brassius is "The Harvest", a collective of flower-like sculptures ranging in color, each with six bulbs equidistance around a ring, possibly inspired by Arboliva.

Brassius in the anime

Brassius was first mentioned in HZ009, with Alex mentioning that he has seen a rare Pokémon, which Liko theorized could've been the Black Rayquaza.

Brassius debuted in HZ010, where he was revealed to suffer from artist's block and no longer could see any quality in any of his works. Liko, Roy and Nemona stopped by his house for information. Brassius immediately took a liking to Liko upon hearing that she's is Alex's daughter, inviting her and her friends to his home. Upon being enraged by Roy's question about Rayquaza, he ended the conversation. Later on seeing Liko, Roy, and Nemona's motivation to cheer him up by gathering together dozens of Sunflora, Brassius decided to show them his Rayquaza sculpture, explaining that his encounter with Rayquaza had caused his slump. Seeing Roy's animation, Brassius decided to challenge Roy to a battle. With renewed spirit, Brassius managed to win the battle. Before the group left, Brassius decided to show them one more sculpture, this time of a giant Arboliva that he saw in the forest where Rayquaza appeared.

In HZ015, Brassius was mentioned by Roy, while the Rising Volt Tacklers were looking for Liko in Artazon, Brassius was one of the people he visited to find out where she might have gone.

Character

Brassius is a passionate artist who uses Pokémon as his inspiration for his artwork. He uses the word "avant-garde" when something intrigues or upsets him. As a Gym Leader, he uses battling as a way to teach Trainers and improve their battling skills.

Trivia

  • Brassius's Japanese Gym Leader title is ネイチャーアーティスト.
  • His Sudowoodo's Grass Tera Type alludes to Sudowoodo's mimicry of actual trees. This is referenced by Brassius himself after Terastallizing the Pokémon, calling it "Truleewoodo".
  • Of the eight Gym Leaders of Paldea, Brassius is the only one not to be seen holding a Poké Ball prior to calling out his first Pokémon.
  • After he recalls his Pokémon from battle, he touches the Poké Ball to his forehead rather than simply nodding at it like many other Trainers.
