Terastal energy (Japanese: テラスタルエネルギー Terastal energy) is a type of energy in the Pokémon world derived from the Tera Pokémon, Terapagos. This energy was researched by Professor SadaS/Professor TuroV during their stay in Area Zero. This energy can cause Pokémon to Terastallize, either naturally or through the use of Tera Orbs, a device created by the professor.
In the core series games
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet
Over two million years ago, in the Paldea region, a Terapagos got trapped in the Area Zero Underdepths, being the only surviving one from seismic shifts, getting trapped there instead of dying. There it slumbered for years, giving birth to the Terestal energy and filling Area Zero's caverns with large Tera crystals and even a crystallized tree, all filled with that very same energy. Over the next thousands of years, the surviving Terapagos's power spreaded all over the Paldea region, giving birth to the phenomenon known as the Terastal phenomenon, a phenomenon that crystallizes Pokémon, strenghten their moves and that can even change their typings.
Ten years ago, Professor SadaS/Professor TuroV started to research on this energy along with a small team with the goal of finding a way to bring Pokémon from other timelines to the present. They eventually managed to use that energy to create and power up Tera Orbs, which they sold all over Paldea, an AI-powered robot with their exact appearance, and a time machine used to bring Pokémon from the ancient pastS/distant futureV. At some point, Glimmet and Glimmora started appearing all over Area Zero and started feeding on the energy and nutrients of the caverns's walls.
In Paldea's present time, many Trainers, Gym Leaders, Elite Four members, and Champions use Tera Orbs to Terastallize their Pokémon during battles. Along with that, Pokémon also started to Terastallize either in the wild or in Tera Raid Battles.
The Teal Mask
Hundreds of years ago, in the land of Kitakami, a man and an ogre came to the land and started living there together, carrying with them some Tera crystals. The crystals were eventually used to be create four brilliant masks. At the top of Oni Mountain, at some point the Crystal Pool was also created with countless Tera crystals in its bottom, filling it with Terastal energy, legends say that the spirits of the dead can be seen around the pool.
The Indigo Disk
In the Unova region's Blueberry Academy, Briar created the Terarium Core to fill the whole Terarium with Terastal energy, so Terastallization is possible. She achieved this by filling the core with a mixture of Paldea soil and water from the Crystal Pool in Kitakami. Following the events of the story, she tries adding crystals from the Area Zero Underdepths to the mixture, causing the Pokémon in the Terarium to not only Terastallize but also Terastallize with the rare Stellar type.
During the final battle against Stellar Form Terapagos, the depths were so filled with Terastal Energy, that a Pokémon could be Terastallized several times while Terapagos absorbed it to try and stop the player from beating it. Following these events, the player's Tera Orb (as well as those belonging to Carmine and Kieran) will be overcharged with Terastral energy, no longer requiring them to be recharged between battles.
