May (Japanese: ハルカ Haruka) serves as the rival in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, should the player choose to play as the male character. She is also the female choice in the games, but May is never among the default names for the character.
The Generation III games broke from the tradition of naming characters as their respective game colors, such as Red in the Generation I and Generation II games. As such, May's counterparts include May from the anime, Sapphire in the Pokémon Special manga and Haruka from Pokémon Chamo-Chamo ☆ Pretty ♪.

Trivia
- May is the only female rival in the games.
- In Ruby, one of May's default names, Terra, is probably a reference to Groudon being a Template:Type2. The same can be said of Marina, in Sapphire, possibly referencing Kyogre as a Template:Type2.
- When May returned in the anime in DP076, her outfit was the one worn by her game counterpart in Pokémon Emerald.
- May and Brenden wore less clothes in Pokemon Emerald than in Ruby and Sapphire. Probably because Hoenn's temperature is rising while Sinnoh's is falling, thus Lucus, Dawn, and Pearl are wearing more clothes in Platinium than in Diamond and Pearl.
