A Pokémon Gym (Japanese: ジム Gym) is a place where Pokémon trainers go to train their Pokémon. Just like real life gymnasiums, where one can go to work out and build physical strength, Pokémon Gyms are places where trainers can go to sharpen their battling skills and where their Pokémon can go to gain experience. Often specializing in a particular elemental type, Gyms create an environment which allows trainers to test both their skills and Pokémon against those of others. The most powerful trainer in a given Gym is called the Gym Leader, whom the lower-ranking members of a Gym look up to greatly.
Official Gyms
Gyms that are certified by the Pokémon League are vital to a trainer's Pokémon journey. Leagues are designed so that conventional trainers must travel far and wide before entering a League Competition, as the only way to enter one is by gaining at least eight official Gym Badges, and there can only be one official Gym per city.
List of Gyms
There are eight known official Gyms in each region. In the Anime, Gary reveals that he has more than eight Badges, hinting that there are more Gyms than players are given access to in the Games, at least in the Kanto region.
Kanto
Pewter Gym
Pewter City's Gym is based on Template:Type2 Pokémon. Known members include Camper Jerry, Camper Liam, Gym Leader Brock, Brock's father, Flint, and Brock's mother, Mizuho. Trainers who defeat Brock receive the Boulderbadge. In the anime, it's a somewhat small stone building, and Brock's family lives in the house outside. The battlefield is littered with jagged rocks and boulders. After Brock's mother returns, the gym is turned into a Water/Rock gym, and a pool is installed in the middle. In the TCG, the Pewter City Gym is a large, stone battlefield surrounded by rock formations that encircle it.
Cerulean Gym
The Template:Type2 Pokémon Gym at Cerulean City is also a tourist attraction with a large aquarium and swimming pool. Known members include Swimmer Briana, Swimmer Parker, Swimmer Diana, Swimmer Luis, Picnicker Diana, Gym Leader Misty, and Misty's sisters. In the anime, the building itself is a dome-shaped brightly colored Gym with a gigantic painting of a Dewgong on top of it. The TCG's design has a similar appearance, but less decorative.
Vermilion Gym
In the anime, the Vermilion Gym is a warehouse-like building with lightning bolts painted on it, and the arena inside is a dimly-lit boxing ring. In the TCG, the inside of the Gym appears metallic and machine-like, and a series of dyanamos surrounds the arena and produces an electrical current that converges in the center of it.
Celadon Gym
Saffron Gym
Fuschia Gym
The Fuschia City Gym is an old-fashioned mansion located in a forest outside of the city proper. It is filled with booby traps, most notably invisible walls and a hoarde of explosive Voltorb. Battles take place either inside the mansion or in the courtyard outside.
Cinnabar Gym
The Cinnabar Gym has two sections in the anime, one is inside of the volcano, and has an arena suspended over the lava inside one of the chambers. The other arena is in the top crater of the volcano itself. The TCG's version of the Gym is also located in a molten pool of lava. In the game, the Gym is a high-tech affair featuring a series of sealed doors. Trivia questions about various Pokémon must be answered to unseal the doors.
Viridian Gym
Orange
Mikan Gym
Trovita Gym
Kumquat Gym
Th first official Double Battle in Pokémon canon took place at Kumquat Gym. In order to gain the Jade Star Badge, challengers must use two of their Pokémon to defeat two of Luana's Pokémon simultaneously.
Johto
Violet Gym
Azaela Gym
Goldenrod Gym
Ecruteak Gym
Olivine Gym
Cianwood Gym
Mohogany Gym
Blackthorn Gym
Hoenn
Rustboro Gym
Dewford Gym
Dewford Town's Gym is a pitch-black maze. As you defeat trainers, the Gym lights up. Its trainers specialize in Fighting-types, and its leader is Brawly.
Mauville Gym
Mauville City's Gym is based on Template:Type2 Pokémon. It's filled with gadgets and traps that Wattson designed. Known members include Guitarist Kirk, Youngster Ben, Battle Girl Vivian, Guitarist Shawn, Watto, and Gym Leader Wattson.
Lavaridge Gym
Lavaridge Town's Gym is based on Fire-type Pokémon. Known members include Kindler Cole, Cooltrainer Zane, Kindler Axle, Battle Girl Sadie, and Kindler Andy. In the games, it's a bathhouse full of steam and geysers that shoot trainers from the basement to the first floor. Flannery's students hide in some of the pools.
Petalburg Gym
Petalburg City's Gym is based around Normal-type Pokemon. Between the entrance and Gym Leader Norman are a series of rooms, each containing a Trainer. The Trainers each use a different stat-raising item on their Pokemon.
Fortree Gym
Mossdeep Gym
Sootopolis Gym
The trainers here specialize in Water-type Pokemon, many of which are dual-types. To reach the Gym Leader, you must step on every ice tile to activate the stairways. If any tile is used twice, the player will fall to a lower level, where the trainers are located. In Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, the Gym Leader is Wallace. In Pokemon Emerald, Wallace is the League Champion, and Juan, his mentor, leads the Gym.
Alternate Gyms
Unofficial Gyms
Saffron City Dojo
The trainers of this gym specialize in Fighting-type Pokemon. It used to be the town's official Gym until Sabrina defeated its leader. After the player defeats the dojo's leader, he will give the player either Hitmonlee or Hitmonchan as a reward.
A.J.'s Gym
Kas Gym
Yas Gym
Pre Gym
This unofficial Gym of Phenac City doubles as a Training School. In Pokémon Colosseum, its leader, Justy, will not battle the trainer until they have at least six Pokémon, and will give them a TM 27 for Return. See Pre Gym.
