Rotom (Japanese: ロトム Rotom) is a dual-type Electric/Ghost Pokémon.
It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon. However, it can change form.
Biology
Physiology
Rotom looks similar to Castform, but Rotom has no real relation to any other species, since it doesn't have any evolutions or pre-evolutions. Rotom has a body of plasma. It also has teeth, which are often seen. Even though Rotom is classified as being an Electric/Ghost type, it possesses traits that aren't usually normal for something that's supposed to be spirit, such as the need to eat, being able to faint and somehow reproducing. Rotom themselves are shaped like lightning rods, while the blue aura of electricity around them takes the appearance of lightning.
In Pokémon Platinum, Rotom also has five extra forms (each based on a household appliance), which can be transformed between using an event-exclusive item called the Secret Key. They are based on a refrigerator (Frost Rotom), washing machine (Wash Rotom), fan (Spin Rotom), lawn mower (Cut Rotom), and a toaster oven (Heat Rotom). Despite having visual characteristics of other types (Ice, Water, Flying, Grass and Fire, respectively), they share the original Rotom's Electric and Ghost types. In contrast, their base stats are far higher than those of the original Rotom, to the point of being analogous to evolutions. Due to having limited availability, the five forms are banned from official tournaments.
Gender differences
Rotom is a genderless species.
Special abilities
Rotom can creep into machines and appliances and infiltrate them. It may also possess and take the form of them if it wishes. However, only 5 alternate forms have been discovered so far.
Behavior
Rotom are mischievous, apparently wreaking havoc on electrical appliances just for the fun of it.
Habitat
They usually live in elecrical appliances, sometimes in those of abandoned places. In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, a Rotom resides inside a TV, where the player is able to catch it after obtaining the National Pokédex (Diamond and Pearl).
Diet

Trivia
- When Rotom is encountered, the music is the same as legendary encounters although it is not classified as one. Rotom is, to date, the only non-legendary Pokémon to do this. Cresselia and Shaymin do the opposite, being the only legendaries encountered in Generation IV for which the normal wild battle music plays.
- Rotom has the same height and weight as the lake trio.
- It is the only Generation IV Pokémon not in the original Sinnoh Dex that is neither legendary nor an evolution of a Pokémon from previous generations.
- No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Rotom.
- Rotom is one of three Ghost-types whose color isn't in the black or purple category. The others are Shedinja (brown) and Froslass (white).
- Rotom is one of the two Electric-types who are immune to Template:Type2 moves, the other being Zapdos.
- With the exception of Unown, Rotom has the most forms of any non-legendary Pokémon, with six in total. Behind it is Castform, who has four.
- According to a journal in a secret room in the Eterna Galactic HQ, Pluto discovered and named Rotom. When he was a child, Pluto lost his toy robot. He spent hours looking for it to no avail. Suddenly a Rotom jumped out of his lawnmower and he was surprised to say the least. He named the Pokémon Rotom, and soon Pluto and the Pokémon became good friends. Pluto always wanted to hug his new friend, but he couldn't for obvious reasons. However, one day, Rotom got startled and zapped Pluto, making him faint. When he awoke, Rotom was gone. Soon after, he found his toy robot in the garbage. When he picked it up, Pluto realized that Rotom had entered his toy. He could then finally hug his new friend.
- Rotom is one of only two Ghost-types that cannot learn Psychic, the other being Shedinja.
- The Secret Key, the recently released Key item, looks similar to Rotom's "head".
- When Rotom transforms, it learns the new move like all other new moves. The move is replaced by another if Rotom possesses another object, and it is deleted when Rotom transforms back to its Normal Form.
- Rotom changes its forms in a similar fashon to Deoxys in the Generation IV games.
- Rotom is the only Pokémon with multiple forms that must possess another object in order to change form. The others, like Deoxys, Giratina and Shaymin, actually transform their bodies.
- Rotom is the last Template:Type2 Pokémon in National Dex order as well as the last non-legendary Pokémon.
Origin
Rotom appears to be based of off Pulseman, who was actually designed by Pokémon designer Ken Sugimori, although it may also be inspired by the unexplained phenomenon of ball lightning. Its Pokédex entry brings to mind gremlins. Its posseseion of other objects may be based on poltergeists. It also very much resembles a Chao.
Name origin
In Pokémon Platinum, it is revealed that Pluto named the first Rotom. It appeared out of his lawnmower, and Pluto named it Rotom because of its origin. Rotom is the word motor backwards; this may refer to the fact that motors make many appliances go, while Rotom make them fail. Its name may also come from rotation and atom. Its French name, Motisma, comes from moteur and plasma.
