The shell possessed by Turtwig has grown to protect Grotle's entire head and back. Turtwig's sprout has migrated to Grotle's back and grown into full bushes. Grotle will sometimes start to roll around in dirt and mud. This allows minerals to seep in and make its shell even harder.

Grotle is the heaviest of any of the middle evolutions of the starters and heavier than all of the final stages of the starters except for Venusaur, Meganium and Torterra.
"Grotle" comes from grove and turtle. Its Japanese name, Hayashigame, derives from 林 hayashi, forest or grove, and 亀 kame, turtle. Its German name, Chelcarain, comes from Chelonia and Terrain. Its French name, Boskara, comes from bosquet and carapace.
