Ponyta (Japanese: ポニータ Ponyta) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.
It evolves via level into Rapidash at Level 40.
Biology
Physiology
Ponyta's physiology is similar to that of a horse. However, its mane and tail are made of flame rather than the usual hair. It is capable of leaping tall buildings in a single bound. In order to withstand the force of landing, its hooves are ten times harder than diamond.
Gender differences
None.
Special abilities
Ponyta's ability, Flash Fire, causes it to power up if it is hit by a Template:Type2 move, and causes the move to have no effect.

Trivia
- In Ponyta's Generation II Template:Shiny2 sprite, its flames have a black shadow over the red flames, whereas in later Generations they are blue.
- Ponyta is able to learn the move Horn Drill via breeding despite it lacking an apparent horn. This would make sense for Rapidash, however.
- Ponyta and Rapidash are the only Template:Type2s in the Sinnoh Dex besides the region's starter Pokémon, Chimchar, Monferno, and Infernape. This is especially apparent when facing Flint, who only has Rapidash and Infernape as actual Fire-type Pokémon.
- In August of 2007, employees of Game Freak put Japanese Psyduck up on Global Trade Station for American Ponyta.
- Ponyta is one of fourteen Pokémon that it is possible to collect foreign Pokédex entries for in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.
Origin
It would seem that Ponyta, along with its evolution Rapidash, are based on Pyrios, Aeos, Aethon, and Phlegon, the "fiery steeds" that carried the Greek God Helios's Chariot of the Sun around the world each day.
Name origin
Ponyta's name is derived from pony. It may also be partly based on the Spanish word "bonita", meaning "beautiful". It could also be a shortened form of the word ponytail
In other languages
- German: Ponita
- French: Ponyta
- Korean: 포니타 Ponita
- Chinese (Hong Kong): 小火馬 - Literally "little fire horse".
