Torchic (Japanese: アチャモ Achamo) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.

It evolves into Combusken starting at level 16, who evolves into Blaziken starting at level 36.

Along with Treecko and Mudkip, it is one of three starter Pokémon players can choose from at the beginning of Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald.

Biology

Physiology

Torchic are small baby birds that are covered in red and yellow downy feathers. Their wings are underdeveloped and are almost useless aside keeping the Pokémon warm. Their legs and feet however are well developed for running and scratching. They also have a crest on their heads which vaguely resembles a flame. They also possess a flame sac much like other fire Pokémon like Vulpix and Flareon.

Gender differences

Male Torchic have a very small black speck on their rears. Females do not have this mark.

Special abilities

Like many Template:Type2s, Torchic is able to breath fire from its beak.

Behavior

Being a young Pokémon, Torchic are naturally curious and are very inquisitive about things. Thus, they need someone to guide them and to train them. They will follow their trainer with unsteady steps. Individual personalities range from meek to headstrong. Torchic apparently don't like the dark because they can't see what's in front of them.

In the anime

Harrison started off with a Torchic that he received from Professor Birch. It is now a Blaziken.

File:May's Torchic.jpg
Torchic in the anime

May has a Blaziken that she obtained as a Torchic in Get the Show on the Road!. It evolved into Combusken in A Shroomish Skirmish, and then into Blaziken in Once More with Reeling.

Ash, Max and Brock were given the task of watching over a trio of Hoenn starter Pokémon for Nurse Joy while May was practicing with her Beautifly in Having a Wailord of a Time. The Torchic of that three managed to evolve and had to be hidden.

In the manga

Like her anime counterpart, Sapphire also received a Torchic (nicknamed Chaka) from her father Professor Birch, but, unlike May's, it isn't a crybaby, and loves battles like its trainer. Chaka evolved in Dewford Town during a battle that Sapphire was having against Brawly.

Trivia

  • Torchic and its evolution Combusken are the only Template:Type2 starter Pokémon without an actual flame on them anywhere. In addition, it is also the only Fire starter Pokémon whose English name didn't start with a C and whose Japanese name didn't start with hi.
  • Torchic has the lightest weight of all the basic forms of the starters.
  • Torchic is the only Template:Type2 starter that Ash has never owned.
  • Torchic is also the first starter Pokémon based on a bird. The second is Piplup.
  • Even though Torchic has no arms, it is able to learn Mega Punch by tutoring in Pokémon Emerald.
  • Torchic is the only first form of a starter Pokémon that has a gender difference. Torchic's gender difference is also the most subtle and often goes unnoticed.
  • Torchic's alternate colors resemble its evolution's normal colors.

Origin

It appears to have been based on a chicken hatchling.

Name origin

Torchic's name may be a combination of torch and chick. Its Japanese name is a combination of 赤子 akago, baby, and 軍鶏 shamo, a breed of Japanese chicken once raised for fighting.

In other languages

  • German: Flemmli
  • French: Poussifeu - From Poussin (chick) and feu (fire).
  • Korean: 아차모 Achamo - Derived directly from the Japanese name.
