Combee (Japanese: ミツハニー Mitsuhoney) is a dual-type Bug/Flying Pokémon.

It evolves into Vespiquen starting at level 21, but only if it is female.

Biology

Physiology

Combee is a small insectoid Pokémon that resembles three pieces of orange, hexagonal honeycomb stuck together. Each hexagon has a round yellow face. The bottom-center face being the main thinker of the three is also the only one ‘bee’ to have a full abdomen. The top two hexagons have a single antenna and a wing.

Since Combee is a Bee Pokémon, it has been considered as a distant cousin of the Weedle family, mainly Beedrill.

Gender differences

The lower face of a female Combee has a red spot on its forehead (which would become the red jewel on the head of a Vespiquen) and an open-mouth, smiling expression. In Platinum, however, male Combee also have their mouths open. Also, a male Combee is incapable of evolving.

Special abilities

Combee can fly with its two wings as long as the top two ‘bees’ co-ordinate their flapping. Combee's skills in battle are very limited, since it is only capable of learning two moves (three in Platinum). Using its wings it can whip up fast winds to attack and can also distract Pokémon with the sweet smell of its honey. However, Combee is the only Pokémon that can have Honey Gather as its ability.

Another prominent talent of Combee is honey gathering; finding a way to collect the sugary syrup from almost anywhere.

Combee also have abilities untapped by Pokémon Trainers. Only through the orders of a Combee’s queen can its powerful attacking skills, strong defensive maneuvers and expertise in healing be unlocked.

Combee can also gather together to form a wall.

Behavior

A Combee wall

Combee are mostly sociable among their own kind only. They are generally harmless and when threatened will usually run away. A Combee will almost always be found collecting honey wherever they can.

The rare times they are not gathering honey, they are sleeping or protecting their queen Vespiquen. The former is done by creating a hive out of themselves and other Combee’s, locking together and feeling safe in larger numbers.

Combee are very suggestible creatures and will never defy the orders of its queen. When a Vespiquen feels threatened, its subject Combee’s will not think twice about risking their own lives and forming a Combee wall to protect the queen, then attacking and even killing the threat in an aggressive manner.

Habitat

Combee will commonly make residence in caves and hollow trees of forests and other natural, secluded areas with their queen Vespiquen. When a group of Combee aren’t being led by a queen, they will usually create a make-shift hive (out of their own bodies) anywhere they feel safe.

Diet

The honey Combee’s collect are used for multiple things but just like humans its main use is to be eaten.

Trivia

  • Combee is the only Pokémon species in which two genders exist where only the female can evolve.
  • Combee has three heads like Magneton, Dodrio and Dugtrio; however, unlike the other three, it cannot learn Tri Attack.
  • Until Platinum Combee eyes are difficult to make out on it's face

Origin

Combee is based on honeycombs, and honeybees.

Name origin

Combee's English name is derived from honeycomb and bee. Its name also bears a similarity to "combination", possibly referring to the fact that it is made of three parts. Its Japanese name may derive from 蜜蜂 mitsubachi, honey bee, 三つ mittsu, three, referring to the number of its honeycomb-like features, and the English honey.

In other languages

  • German: Wadribie - From Wabe (honeycomb), Drei (three), and Biene (bee).
  • French: Apitrini - From apis (Latin for bee) and trinity.
  • Korean: 세꿀버리 Se-ggul-bury - Combination of 셋 set (three), 꿀 ggul (honey), and 벌 bur (bee).
  • Chinese: 三頭小蜂
