Synopsis
Template:Incomplete synopsis
Ash finally arrives at the Viridian Gym, only to have Gary Oak drive up in front of him first and enter the Gym. Once inside, Gary battles against Giovanni who seems to be losing to Gary. But at the last minute, he brings out Mewtwo (in armor) and it has no problem defeating Gary's Pokémon. Meanwhile, Ash accidentally loses Togepi and the gang set off searching for it. Togepi ends up in the arms of Team Rocket who immediately take it to their Boss. Giovanni is not pleased with this, but then has to run off for an emergency, leaving Team Rocket as the gym leaders. Ash enters the Gym, where they find Togepi, and battles against Jessie for the Earthbadge. After a tough battle, he wins with the help of Pidgeotto and Pikachu, finally gaining enough badges to enter the Pokémon League.

Trivia
- Some scenes of this episode are similar to scenes from the first movie. These include the battle with Giovanni and Gary.
- This marks the first and only time a Gym Leader refuses to give the badge to Ash despite winning the battle fair and square.
- It's subtly hinted that Mewtwo's armor might have been interfering with the Pokédex's scanning ability. When the Pokédex was saying that the Pokémon was unknown and didn't have any available data, there was static interference on the Pokédex screen as well, which none of the other unidentified Pokémon both prior and after had.
- The episode title is a pun of "Battle of the Bulge".
