Spikes (Japanese: まきびし Caltrop) is a non-damaging Template:Type2 move introduced in Generation II.
Effect
Spikes sets spikes around the target Pokémon. In Generation III onwards, the number of Spikes that can be set up can be increased by using Spikes again after the initial Spikes was used. Spikes can be used up to three times, each increasing the damage done to the opponent upon switching in. One layer of Spikes will damage the opponent Pokémon by 1/8 of its maximum HP, two will deal 3/16, and three will deal 1/4. The damage inflicted by switching in will not occur on Template:Type2s or Pokémon with Levitate unless Gravity is used. It also does not damage Pokémon with the ability Magic Guard.
