A Potion (Japanese: キズぐすり Wound Medicine) is a type of item from the Pokémon games. They can be used during or out of battle to restore a Pokémon's HP. They can often be found on the ground, whether readily visible or hidden from sight and requiring an Itemfinder to locate, and can be bought at most Poké Marts. Although the traditional RPG depiction of Potion is as a drink, Pokémon Potions appear to be topical, stored in spray bottles and applied to the skin.
Types of potion
Potion
- Japanese: キズぐすり Wound Medicine
The standard and most common kind of potion. Costs $300 in Poké Marts. Restores 20 HP.
Super Potion
- Japanese: いいキズぐすり Good Wound Medicine
An improved potion over the regular potion. Costs $700 in Poké Marts. Restores 50 HP.
Hyper Potion
- Japanese: すごいキズぐすり Amazing Wound Medicine
An improved potion over the super potion. Costs $1200 in Poké Marts. Restores 200 HP.
Max Potion
- Japanese: まんたんのくすり Tank-Filling Medicine
The best and least common kind of potion. Costs $2500 in Poké Marts. Restores HP to full.
Full Restore
- Japanese: かいふくのくすり Recovery Medicine
This item has the effects of both a Max Potion and a Full Heal simultaneously. Costs $3000 in Poké Marts. Restores HP to full, and heals poisoning, paralysis, sleep, burn, or freeze, also confusion inside battles.
SecretPotion

- Japanese: ひでんのくすり Secret Medicine
A key item in the Generation II and IV games. In Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver, it is given to the player by the worker in Cianwood City's Pharmacy and used to heal Jasmine's Ampharos, Amphy.
In Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, Cynthia will give it to the player to cure the Psyduck that block Route 210 to Celestic Town after the player defeats Crasher Wake. As it is a key item, it will not disappear when used, but after unblocking Route 210, it no longer has any use.
In the anime
Potions have been used on occasion in the anime. Usually, Brock carries them in his backpack and uses them to heal injured Pokémon. They seem to sting slightly whenever used, suggesting that they not only heal but sterilize the wound. Tracey has also been seen with some potions that need to be taken orally.
