Goldenrod City
Template:Infobox town Goldenrod City (Japanese: コガネシティ Kogane City) is a sprawling metropolis located in western Johto. It is the largest city in the region, rivaling Saffron City, the largest city in Kanto and Goldenrod's "sister city" in many ways, in size. Goldenrod is the center of the region's economy and telecommunications. Major attractions for trainers include the Johto Radio Tower and the city's Department Store, Game Corner, and Gym.
Pokémon Trainers often come to Goldenrod City in order to win the Plain Badge from Whitney, the Goldenrod Gym Leader, who specializes in Normal-type Pokémon.

The Goldenrod Department Store, located in the city center, claims to have a full selection of Pokémon Goods for Trainers. Though the store does not carry vital items such as Hyper Potion, Full Restore, or Ultra Ball, it does back up its claim by boasting the widest selection of specialty items in Johto.
The store is composed of nine levels, including two basements and six shopping floors. The uppermost floor features a rooftop square, complete with binoculars to view locations off in the distance.
The basements of the store connect to the Underground Path, which encompasses most of western Goldenrod.

- Main article: Johto Radio Tower
The Johto Radio Tower, located at the west end of the main east-west path through the city, is the source of all PokéGear broadcasts in Johto. An antenna on top of the tower transmits three radio programs daily, with a fourth program being aired between 6 PM and 12 AM every night. The building has three studios spread over five floors.
Magnet Train station
- Main article: Magnet Train
Saffron City and Goldenrod City are linked by not only their mammoth sizes, but also by the Magnet Train, a high-speed train that runs regularly between the two cities. The train follows no set schedule, making the Magnet Train an ideal way to travel between Kanto and Johto.
Underground Path
- Main article: Underground Path (Goldenrod)
An underground path, often called the "Underground", runs from the southwestern side of the city to the northwestern area, with a branch leading from the Underground to the department store. A pair of groomers in the tunnel will groom Pokémon, increasing the friendship value for the groomed Pokémon, for a small fee.
In the anime
When Ash, Brock, and Misty reach Goldenrod City (pictured in the infobox), they are in awe of the its size and the fact that there are so many things to do. Misty plans to take advantage of the department store sales and Brock wants to meet some pretty city girls.
When Ash said he wanted some food, Brock suggested the Goldenrod Galleria. The three Pokémon trainers found, however, that getting somewhere in Goldenrod City is not as easy at it looks because many streets are dead ends. Even Whitney, a resident of Goldenrod, has a hard time getting around.
Notes
- Goldenrod is the hometown of Bill, the inventor of the Kanto and Johto PC Storage System, as well as the rest of his family, who lives in a small house near the Underground's southern entrance.
- Other locations of interest in Goldenrod include a flower shop in the northeast area of the city as well as a woman who is able to determine the happiness of a Pokémon located in a house near the Bike Shop.
- The city's suburbs also feature a pair of notable locations. The National Park is located north of Goldenrod off of Route 35 while the Pokémon Daycare is just south of the city on Route 34.
- In the Japanese verison of Pokémon Crystal, the Pokémon Center was much larger since it had machines to use the Pokémon Mobile System's capabilities, and it was known as the Pokémon Communication Center
Demographics
Goldenrod City's population is about 77, making by far the largest city in Johto. It's population is more than double the second-most-populous city in Johto, Violet City. This number also makes Goldenrod the biggest city in the Pokémon world, with 6 more than Lilycove City, the second biggest. This high number is likely due to Goldenrod being the biggest city in the Pokémon world in terms of area and volume.
Name origin
Goldenrods are a type of yellow-colored flowering plant. Kogane (黄金) means gold.
