Ecruteak City
Template:Infobox town Ecruteak City (エンジュシティ Enju City) is located in northern Johto, northeast of National Park, northwest of Violet City, and west of Mt. Mortar, and is surrounded by wooded terrain.
Pokémon Trainers often come to Ecruteak City in order to win the Fog Badge from Morty, the Ecruteak Gym Leader who specializes in Ghost-type Pokémon.
Ecruteak is known as "A Historical City Where the Past Meets the Present", a fitting title, reflected in its buildings' traditional Japanese architecture. It has a role in many legends, such as those of Raikou, Entei, Suicune, Lugia, and Ho-Oh.
In the Generation II games, it is mentioned that in ancient times, Ho-Oh and Lugia lived in two grand towers. But when one of them burned down, becoming what is known today as the Burned Tower, both flew away, never to be seen again in Ecruteak.
In the anime, Morty tells Ash and company of how in ancient times, Ho-Oh lived in a great tower in Ecruteak. But when war struck and the tower was burned down, it created Raikou, Entei, and Suicune from creatures who had perished in the fire, and all four disappeared. Later, a new tower, Tin Tower, was built, but Ho-Oh never returned.

Burned Tower
- Main article: Brass Tower
The Brass Tower, with gleaming gold-colored panels, was, according to legend, the perch of Ho-Oh. Once as majestic as the silver-colored Tin Tower, the Brass Tower was burned to the ground after a war broke out. This chased the two legendary Pokémon away, but not before Ho-Oh gave new life to three Pokémon killed when the tower was destroyed: Entei, Raikou, and Suicune. Lugia left its home of the Tin Tower to live forevermore in the depths of the Whirl Islands, while Ho-Oh began to fly around the world, searching and waiting for a day when it would find a trainer with a pure heart.
In Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal, the player encounters Raikou, Entei, and Suicune, who then flee, for the first time in the burned-out remains of the Brass Tower. This is also where the player's rival will challenge him or her once again, with the second form of the starter he stole.
Tin Tower
- Main article: Tin Tower
The Tin Tower is a location in Johto. In Pokémon Gold and Silver, the trainer finally comes to the Tin Tower, holding the Rainbow Wing. At this point, the player will be allowed to ascend the remaining eight levels of the tower, up to the roof, where Ho-Oh itself waits. However, in Pokémon Crystal, players with a Clear Bell will be able to capture Suicune here, and only after catching each of the legendary beasts, will a trainer be able to ascend the steps above the first floor to get to Ho-Oh.
