Kyogre (Japanese: カイオーガ Kyogre) is a Template:Type2 legendary Pokémon.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Kyogre possesses the ability to expand the oceans. In ancient times it came in conflict with Groudon, a Pokémon with the ability to expand continents.

In Pokémon Sapphire and Pokémon Emerald, Kyogre is sought after by Team Aqua as part of their plot to create more habitats for aquatic Pokémon by raising the sea level.

Kyogre is the version mascot of Pokémon Sapphire, appearing on the boxart.

Biology

Physiology

It has big fins or "wings". It has a deep blue body with a white chin area with 2 spikes. Above each eye are two spots. It has markings on its wings which barely resembles the letter A. It also has two small fins on its back with 2 stripes running horizontally below the fins. The tail seems tattered with 4 trails, the inner smaller than the outer. It also has a mouth full of sharp triangular teeth.

Gender differences

Kyogre is a genderless species.

Special abilities

Kyogre has the power to summon heavy rain that remains even after the Pokémon has left the area. It also controls the seas, widening the oceans with massive tidal waves.

Kyogre in the anime

Kyogre's first appearance was in Gaining Groudon. Team Magma had captured Kyogre but didn't have the correct orb to control it. Team Magma planned to make a trade with Team Aqua, who have captured Groudon. The trade was about to be made when Archie decided to use Kyogre to destroy everyone, including his fellow henchmen.

The battle between Kyogre and Groudon occurred during the following episode, The Scuffle of Legends.

Kyogre appeared in the movie Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea just in time for the final showdown against The Phantom.

A Kyogre makes a cameo in the introduction of The Rise of Darkrai and Giratina and the Sky Warrior.

In the manga

Kyogre's first appearance was in VS. Kyogre & Groudon. It was awakened by Team Aqua so the waters will be expanded. Wattson, Flannery and Winona tried to stop it but failed due to Team Aqua's interference.

Other appearances

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

After being released from a Poké Ball, Kyogre opens its mouth and squirts out a stream of water. The water is non-damaging, but causes characters to be knocked back with extreme force. Touching Kyogre's body will do damage. Kyogre also appears as a trophy.

Trivia

Marina's Kyogre Costume

Origin

Kyogre is most likely based on the Hebrew legends of the leviathan, the gigantic primeval master of all sea creatures. While early myths about the leviathan make it out to be crocodile- or serpent-like, later depictions have changed to show it as a whale in many cases. Its counterpart was the behemoth. Kyogre's appearance draws inspiration from various whales, but it closely resembles an orca.

Name origin

Kyogre's name can be broken up into 海 kai, ocean, and orca, a species of dolphin. Its name is not likely to have been derived directly from ogre, which are mythological land beasts. It is worth noting that without the last syllable, Kyogre spells out 海王 kaiō, which means King of the Sea. It is also worth noting that 海王 are the first two characters in 海王星 Kaiōsei, Neptune.
