A hole is a special tile in various games that allows the player to fall into another floor of a building or sometimes even caves.
Kanto
Generation I
In Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow, holes are found in various locations. Perhaps the easiest to find is in the Seafoam Islands, where the player has to push boulders down holes, and then follow them by going down the hole themselves. This would eventually lead the player to Articuno.
Generation III
In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, holes are in the same location as in the earlier Kanto region games. However, in these versions, a special kind of hole exists in the Sevii Islands. In one of the islands, it is required to push boulders into these holes, which open up the path to the Tanoby Ruins.
Johto
In Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal and their Generation IV remakes, there are holes that exist in the Ice Path. It is required to push boulders down these holes, which allows the player to go through different floors and eventually exit the cave.
Hoenn
Generation III
In the Sky Pillar, one must time riding a bike over cracked tiles perfectly, otherwise they will give way and the player will fall through to the previous floor.
Sinnoh
Generation IV
In Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, there are holes in Snowpoint Temple, where the player must go through the five different floors, which will eventually lead the player to Regigigas, so long as the player has Regice, Regirock, and Registeel in their party.
Unova
Generation V
In Unova, there is another type of hole similar to the hole in FireRed and LeafGreen. Rocks can be pushed into the holes with Strength so that the player can walk over the rocks.
There are also special sand pits in Relic Castle that can trap the player if the sides of the pit are run across, and the sliding sand drags them to the center, where a hole awaits. Walking across the sides of thr pit allows the player to cross them successfully. The sand pit hole leads down to the next level of the ruins.
