Lunatone (Japanese: ルナトーン Lunatone) is a dual-type Rock/Psychic Pokémon.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Biology

Lunatone is a Pokémon that originally came from space. They originally came to earth within meteorites and have since adapted to life on earth quite nicely.

Physiology

Lunatone resembles a crescent moon. It has red eyes on the side of its body and has an unusual beak like structure in front of it. Being an inorganic Pokémon, it isn't preyed upon, nor does it need to prey on others, as it derives all its energy from moonlight. It uses telekinesis to float in mid-air.

Gender differences

Lunatone is a genderless species.

Special abilities

Lunatone's ability, Levitate, allows it to avoid Template:Type2 moves such as Earthquake or Magnitude. Its powerful red eyes also fill the onlooker with fear. It is capable of reading the thoughts of other lifeforms like most psychic types. It is even capable of brainwashing, but only does this when it feels threatened and usually as a last resort. Its psychic powers can grow stronger under the light of the full moon. It is said that if Lunatone is exposed under the moonlight for enough time its psychic powers will grow stronger than that of an Alakazam.

Behavior

Lunatone's power and health seems to be tied directly to the phases of the moon. When there is a full moon, Lunatone is at the peak of its strength. Presumably when there is a new moon, Lunatone is defenseless. It is capable of reading the minds of other lifeforms, communicate with telepathy and hypnotize others if it feels threatened.

Habitat

Lunatone seems to prefer caves.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

This Pokémon has no need to feed since it derives all of its energy from moonlight.

In the anime

Liza's Lunatone

Major appearances

Lunatone first appeared in Crazy as a Lunatone. A pair of thieves calling themselves the Pokémon Mystery Club was after it due to wanting to get their hands on another outer-space Pokémon.

Liza and her Lunatone debuted in It's Still Rocket Roll to Me alongside Tate and his Solrock. Ash Ketchum's Gym battle against Tate and Liza and their Meteorite Pokémon was in the following episode.

Minor appearances

A Lunatone appeared in the opening scenes of Zoroark: Master of Illusions.

Pokédex entries

AG087 Lunatone Ash's Pokédex Lunatone, the Meteorite Pokémon. Lunatone is believed by some people to have come from outer space. It moves around most actively during full moons and its powerful red eyes instill fear into anyone who beholds them.

In the manga

As in the games, one of Tate and Liza's main Pokémon is a Lunatone that the twins use in conjunction with Solrock in double battles.

Trivia

  • Lunatone shares the same species name with its counterpart Solrock. They are both known as Meteorite Pokémon.
  • Like Furret, Lunatone can learn both Ice Beam and Blizzard, but cannot learn Icy Wind.
  • In the "Items" section of the DP Official Guide Book, Lunatone's name is misspelled as Lunastone.
  • Despite being a moon-like Pokémon and what was shown in Crazy as a Lunatone, Lunatone cannot learn Moonlight.
  • Without its ability, this Pokémon and its counterpart Solrock are the only Pokémon that have seven weaknesses and are not partially Template:Type2 or have a 4x weakness or 1/4 resistance to anything. Other Pokémon that have seven weaknesses include Celebi, Exeggcute, Exeggutor, Snover, and Abomasnow.
  • Despite Pokédex entries claiming that Lunatone strikes fear into its enemies when they look it in the eyes, it does not have the ability Intimidate, nor can it learn Leer or Scary Face legitimately.

Origin

Lunatone is based on the moon, as well as a meteorite.

Name origin

Lunatone (Japanese, English) is a combination of the Latin word luna, meaning moon, and "stone".

In other languages

Language Name Name Origin
German Lunastein From luna and Stein.
French Seleroc From Séléné, a Greek goddess of the moon, and roc.
Korean 루나톤 Lunatone The same as Japanese.
Chinese (Mandarin) 月石 Yuè Shí Literally "moon stone".
