Rhydon (Japanese: サイドン Sidon) is a dual-type Ground/Rock Pokémon.

It evolves from Rhyhorn starting at level 42, and evolves into Rhyperior by trade with Protector.

Biology

Physiology

Rhydon is a large, gray dinosaur-like Pokémon. It has a long tail with skinny, black stripes. Rhydon has a cream-colored stomach and a ridged back. Rhydon has two horns on its head, with the one on the nose being a metal drill.

Gender differences

The female's drill-horn is smaller than the male's.

Special abilities

Rhydon's drill-horn is capable of crushing uncut diamonds and it can knock down a building with one strike of its tail. Rhydon's rocky hide is strong enough to withstand direct cannonball fire.

Behavior

Rhydon is apparently much smarter than its Template:P2, evidenced by its ability to stand on its hind-legs.

Habitat

Rhydon are mainly found in cavernous areas.

In the anime

A mechanical Rhydon appeared in Island of the Giant Pokémon as a part of Pokémon Land.

Rhydon's true debut episode was Showdown at Dark City, under the ownership of one of the trainers at Kas Gym.

Rhydon's first major role was in Riddle Me This, being one of Blaine's Pokémon. Blaine used a Rhydon against Ash during the first battle for Ash's Volcano Badge. While normally tough against electric attacks, Rhydon was defeated when Ash's Pikachu struck Rhydon's horn, which acted like a lightning rod.

Giovanni owns a Rhydon that he loaned to Jessie and James in The Battle of the Badge.

A trainer named Assunta used one to battle Ritchie in Friends to the End

A Rhydon belonging to Rudy made a cameo appearance in Misty Meets Her Match.

Giant Rhydon were seen on Fairchild Island in Bound For Trouble.

Right on, Rhydon featured a Rhydon that knew Surf.

Rhydon also made a cameo appearance in Numero Uno Articuno as one of Noland's Pokémon.

Brock's dad, Flint, has a Rhydon, but was just mentioned. Flint mostly used his Rhydon for helping him decorate the Pewter Gym's battlefield with rocks from mountaintops.

Nurse Joy had a Rhydon to help look for Kabuto fossils.

Ash's Pikachu and Paul's Chimchar battled against a Rhydon and a Magmar in the Hearthome City Tag-Battle Tournament in Tag! We're It...!.

In Bibarel Gnaws Best!, the Head Engineer owned a Rhydon.

In the manga

In the Pokémon Special manga

Rhydon debuts in the Red, Green & Blue chapter in its own round, Raging Rhydon, as a Koga's Pokémon that is forced to evolve by its trainer with a mysterious injection, being the first evolution showed in the manga.

Rhydon is later seen as one of Giovanni's Pokémon.

In Template:PSV, Green captures a Rhydon outside the Viridian Gym. He uses it to defeat Chuck in Template:PSV, as well as Oca in Template:PSV. Near the end of the FireRed and LeafGreen saga, Green remarks on a footnote Giovanni included in his handbook: Rhydon possibly possessed a stronger form. This is a reference to Rhydon's new evolution, Rhyperior.

Earlier in the same volume, Gold encounters a wild Rhydon during his race with Whitney. The Rhydon in question was hunting down a Sudowoodo hiding from it, and kidnapped Whitney when she interfered with her Miltank. Gold tells Sudowoodo to stand up for itself and, with assistance from his billiard cue, helps Sudowoodo defeat the Rhydon.

Trivia

  • Ash's Pikachu fought Blaine's Rhydon in the anime and defeated it, despite it being a Template:Type2 immune to Electric attacks. Rhydon's horn also serves as a lightning rod which negates electric attacks as of the rules for the Pokémon effect. Since then, that battle has been brought up frequently in comparisons between the games and anime and has spawned the popular Pokémon internet meme, "Pikachu! Aim for the horn!". Oddly, Lightningrod is one of the abilities it can have.
  • It is one of the only Template:Type2 and Template:Type2 Pokémon that can learn Surf.
  • Rhydon can also "evolve" from any non-hybrid Glitch Pokémon by the following method:

1: The player must deposit the Glitch Pokémon into Bill's PC.

2: The player must then view the Pokémon's stats.

3: Upon withdrawing the Pokémon, it will be a Rhydon, albeit with the Glitch Pokémon's name (as a nickname), stats, and attacks. It WILL be able to learn Rhydon's level-up and machine moves.

4: If, for any reason, one wishes to turn this Rhydon back into a Glitch Pokémon, one must simply leave Rhydon at the Daycare. Upon withdrawing it, it will be a Glitch Pokémon again, and will retain any moves it learned as a Rhydon (this method is useful for teaching Glitch Pokémon moves they cannot normally know, such as Missingno. with Hyper Beam). Note that this does NOT work with HMs, as the daycare does not accept Pokémon that know HM techniques.

This occurs because Rhydon's index number is 001 in Generation I.

  • A figure very similar to Rhydon is featured on all of the statues in the entry areas of the gyms.
  • Its Generation I sprites are shown having a full length of spines along its back. This was changed to only having three spikes in Generation II.
  • Rhydon and Rhyperior share the same species name with Nidoqueen and Nidoking. They are all known as Drill Pokémon.

Origin

It appears to draw much of its inspiration from a rhinoceros and some aspects of various dinosaurs, such as the triceratops. It also may have been inspired by Anguirus, considering the nose horn and the spikes on their back.

Name origin

Rhydon's name may be a reference to rhinoceros. The don may have been intended to mean "lord." However, it is also used as a suffix in various dinosaur names, so it could be an reference to those prehistoric creatures as well. Its Japanese name is a combination of 犀 sai, rhinoceros, and the aforementioned don.

In other languages

  • German: Rizeros
  • French: Rhinoferos - Rhinocéros means rhinoceros. The remainder refers to féroce meaning ferocious.
  • Korean: 코뿌리 Koppuri - Nose Horn
  • Chinese: 鐵甲暴龍
