A Technical Machine or TM for short (Japanese: わざマシン Waza Mashin, Attack Machine) is a machine used by Pokémon trainers to teach a Pokémon a new technique, or move that it would not otherwise learn. TMs are good for only one use, unlike Hidden Machines or HMs, which can be used over and over again on many different Pokémon. TMs can be found on the ground or bought at department stores.

A TM can also be passed down through Breeding with the male Pokémon passing down moves in the Egg groups.

Generation I List of TMs

Generation I featured the original 50 TMs with an additional 5 HMs. These TMs were found in: Pokémon Red, Pokémon Green, Pokémon Blue and Pokémon Yellow. Move Tutors in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen teach many of these moves to Pokémon as they are not in the most current TM set.

Generation II List of TMs

Generation II, with a newer moveset, overhauled the Generation I TMs. There were additions, removals and renumberings to the original list. There are 50 TMs and are found in Pokémon Gold, Silver and Pokémon Crystal.

Generation III List of TMs

Another moveset overhaul in Generation III forced the TM list to be readjusted once again. There are 50 TMs and are found in these games: Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, Pokémon FireRed, LeafGreen, Pokémon Emerald and Pokémon Colosseum.

Generation IV List of TMs

With Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, the number of TMs was doubled. The first half remained exactly the same as the Generation III list while the new TMs made up the second half. The number of HMs remained at eight, though two new moves replaced Dive, now not machine-learnable, and Flash, now TM70.

The eight HMs bring the number of total combined TMs and HMs to 100.

Move tutor moves

Though technically not TMs, move tutor moves are moves which were often formerly contained in TMs. This type of move began in Crystal, where outside of the Goldenrod City Game Corner a man would teach a compatible Pokémon Flamethrower, Ice Beam, or Thunderbolt for 4000 coins on certain days of the week.

This was continued in FireRed and LeafGreen, where trainers could encounter NPCs who would offer to teach a Pokémon a move that was not otherwise available to it. Most often, these moves were available in TMs in the Red, Blue, and Yellow versions, but because FireRed and LeafGreen use the same TM set as other Generation III games, these moves were no longer able to be taught at will.

In Emerald, the same moves were able to be learned via move tutors, but some Generation II TM moves which were no longer available by TM were now added to the mix.
