Ash is very excited about battling, and having reached Current Town, he decides to head straight for the Pokémon Battle Club. He enters the building, and immediately starts searching for trainers, while Iris and Dent catches up, panting and breathing heavily. Iris then sarcastically comments on Ash's reaction to the Battle Club, telling him that he behaves like a small child. Ash, unaware, searches through the database of trainers, and manages to find one that interests him - Shooti.

Iris, having never met Shooti before, gives a doubtful look, while Dent exclaims in surprise. Dent explains that Shooti had once been to his Gym in Sanyou City, and was awarded the Tri Badge. Iris becomes even more puzzled, and Ash explains that Shooti was the trainer he met in Professor Araragi's lab and the one whom he first battled in Isshu.

Ash shouts in excitement when Don George suddenly appears behind him, seemingly unable to remember Ash. Ash wonders if he is from Karakusa Town, and soon learns that there are Battle Clubs located everywhere in Isshu, each club is run by a Don George of an identical, extended family. Don George then shows them his family picture: the Don George in Karakusa Town stands at the back row, while he himself is in a half-squat position in the front row, all surrounded by similar looking Don Georges in different poses. Don George then activates the in-built Live Caster in the trainer-searching machine and tries to contact Shooti.

Shooti is taking pictures when his Live Caster rings. He attends to it, and Don George greets him, informing him that Ash requests a battle with him. Ash appears soon after and subsequently Iris and Dent, who both introduce themselves. While Shooti is surprised that Dent is not at his gym, Ash interrupts and displays his excitement for the battle. Shooti, however, does not seem very interested and goes on to explain how his Tsutarja easily defeated Ash's Pikachu. Ash formally rebukes, saying that it was due to Zekrom that Pikachu was unable to use electric attacks (Dent became particularly interested and Iris explains to him at the back), and now Pikachu is not his only Pokémon - he had obtained other Pokémon as well. (His agitation caused him to kick the machine.)

Shooti then appears at the entrance of the Battle Club, requesting a 6-on-6 full Pokémon Battle. Ash paused for a moment, and tells him that he has only five Pokémon. Shooti looks at him in disbelief, and while he appeared to be considering, Ash takes out his Tri Badge and shows it to him. Shooti grins for a moment, then tells him that he has obtained two badges. He then goes on to apologize to Don George, saying that he will not battle 5-on-5. Following that, he taunts Ash and tells him that he will not battle him, especially 'a trainer from a countryside area like Kanto'. As he taunts him even further, he finally prepares to take his leave. However, after Iris passes a few sarcastic remarks and calls him a 'small child', and Dent recites a meaningful prose, Shooti changes his mind and declares that he wants to battle Ash, 5-on-5.

Don George stands in the center-side of the field, reciting the rules of the battle while Ash and Shooti stand across each other, ready to battle. As Don George waves his hands and declares the battle open, Shooti sends out Hatooboo, the evolved form of Mamepato. Ash checks his Pokédex, then sends out Mijumaru. Proudly announcing that Mijumaru once belonged to Professor Araragi and helped him win his Tri Badge at the Sanyou Gym, Ash starts the battle by telling Mijumaru to use Water Gun. A jet of water was shot into the air, but Hatooboo turns abruptly and dodges it. Under the command of its trainer, it moves lower to the ground and uses Aerial Ace - first striking the Sea Otter Pokémon from the front and knocking off his shell, then finally returning from the back and hitting it, causing it to faint. Don George, being the referee, declares that Mijumaru is unable to battle, and a point goes to Shooti.

Ash was left awestruck, unable to comprehend what had happened when Shooti talks about Hatooboo's unique properties. From a distance, Iris and Dent break into conversation; they could not help but silently agree with what Shooti had said. Ash recalls Mijumaru, then sends out Pokabu. As Shooti tries to taunt Ash, Ash starts the round again by telling Pokabu to use Ember. As red flames shot out from Pokabu's snout, Hatooboo dodges it again and sweeps past Pokabu, clearly displaying its skill and speed. As Pokabu continues firing into the sky, Hatooboo continues dodging, until it breaks apart into a flock - Shooti had told it to use Double Team. Pokabu stares blankly at Hatooboo when Ash calls out to him - Hatooboo is now using Cheer Up; it glows a bright red and turns around, facing Pokabu and readying its next attack. Once again, Shooti tells it to use Aerial Ace, and Pokabu stares at the flock, unable to determine which one is real.

Quickly, the flock of Hatooboo combines into one, it glows red again and flies low into the ground, straight at Pokabu. With a bang, a repeat of what had happened previously to Mijumaru had taken place: the Pigeon Pokémon had struck Pokabu from the front and back, and Pokabu now lay sprawled on the ground, fainted. Don George, once again, gives another point to Shooti.

As Ash recalls Pokabu, Shooti taunts him for not having his basics as a trainer. Ash, feeling slightly angered, now decides to send Pikachu into battle for the next round.

Meanwhile, the Team Rocket trio, Jessie, James and Meowth, are gathered in the center of a garbage dump in anticipation of a person's arrival. Officer Jenny suddenly shows up, her fellow policemen having surrounded them and climbing over the garbage. Apparently the Jenny at Sanyou City had informed all the other Jennys about them, and the trio are now wanted for their capture. Nevertheless, Team Rocket stood there, calm and composed.

Pikachu charges electricity, and aims a Thunderbolt at Shooti's Hatooboo to which it dodges. The Flying Pokémon glowed red again, and following its Cheer Up, it attacks Pikachu from the front and then the back with its Aerial Ace. Pikachu lies on the ground, but he picks himself up. Shooti is then determined to repeat what Hatooboo had done to Mijumaru and Pokabu. He commands Hatooboo to once again, use Aerial Ace. Ash, spotting his attack pattern, asks Pikachu to grab hold of Hatooboo's feet. As Hatooboo flies near the ground and hits Pikachu, the Electric Mouse Pokémon does as he was told, and hangs loose from underneath its wings. Quickly, he weighs it down and as both Pokémon crash onto the floor, Pikachu swings Hatooboo around and throws it into the air. Immediately, Pikachu charges itself with electricity and rams Hatooboo, sprawled in mid-air, with its Volt Tackle. Pikachu lands on its feet, but Hatooboo flies across the ground, is spread-eagled on its back and faints. Don George declares Hatooboo unable to battle, and Pikachu wins the round.

Iris, Kibago and Dent watches from afar and cheers on Ash. While Ash is savoring his victory, telling how different Pikachu was from the battle at Kanoko Town, Shooti sends out his next Pokémon, Janovy. Ash and Pikachu look at Janovy in surprise. As Ash recalls the match in Kanoko Town with Shooti's Tustarja, Dent tells Iris how Shooti had obtained the Tri Badge with his Janovy by defeating Pod and his Baoppu.

Meanwhile, Officer Jenny and her policemen are advancing on Team Rocket, ready to arrest them should they decide to escape. Suddenly, a rushing truck barges into the dump and causes the surrounding policemen to flee from the dangerous vehicle. The truck drifts, swerves and skids to a halt beside Team Rocket. As the door opens ready to pick the trio up, the driver is now revealed: the agent which Giovanni had arranged for them to meet.

As fast as they could, they got into the vehicle and Officer Jenny's crew followed on motorcycles and police cars; a chase had begun. Officer Jenny drove forward, and the two vehicles were now neck to neck. Officer Jenny demanded them to stop the truck but the truck suddenly picked up speed - it was driving into a half-constructed road where it abruptly ended in mid-air. The truck still pushed on: it drove past the point where there was any road at all and was toppling down into the ground below. Right before the truck could overturn any further, the top hatch opened. As Officer Jenny banks her motorcycle and skids to a halt, she watches the explosion from the truck below, and the Team Rocket trio whom escaped from her flee into the sky with another mysterious individual.

Having escaped Officer Jenny, the agent now hands over a briefcase to James. As he prepares to leave, he tells them his name: Flint. He then escapes into the clouds, while the trio now make their way towards the Resort Desert through the sky.

Pikachu's tail hardens into a block of metal and prepares to hit Janovy with Iron Tail. However, the latter rushes towards Pikachu and uses Cut, and blocks the attack. Subsequently, Shooti tells Janovy to use Grass Mixer. The Grass Snake Pokémon whips up a tornado of leaves and grass and hurls it at Pikachu, drawing him into the vortex. As the tornado lands, it smashes Pikachu onto the ground and causes him to lie flat on its belly. Dazed, Pikachu gets up, and Ash tells him to use Volt Tackle. Responding to his trainer, he gets up, charges itself with electricity and attempts to tackle Janovy. However, just as Pikachu was about to hit, Janovy side-steps and damages Pikachu with a Cut attack, causing him to fall onto his side and faint. Don George declares Pikachu unable to battle.

As Shooti remarks that he has four Pokémon as compared to Ash's two, Ash sends out his Tsutarja. Iris then wonders why Ash does not send out Mamepato, which is a Flying-type and would be an advantage against Grass-types, while Dent reassures her that Ash has plans of his own.

Tsutarja starts the round by using Vine Whip, but Janovy dodges them completely. She then attempts to use Leaf Blade, but miss, and Janovy follows up with a Grass Mixer. The tornado, like it did on Pikachu, draws her into the vortex then slams her onto the ground. Being a Grass-type, the attack did not to seem to damage Tsutarja much; she was back on her feet almost immediately. Shooti taunts Ash that his Janovy is an evolved form of Tsutarja. Ash, however, did not take the bait; he seemed like he had a plan. First, he asked Tsutarja to use Vine Whip, and Janovy, once again, dodges it easily like it had before. Next, while Janovy is distracted by her Vine Whip, Ash asked her to use Attract, and the tables were eventually turned. Janovy was male and became infatuated with Tsutarja, and he thus became unable to attack. Eventually with a series of Vine Whips and a well aimed Leaf Blade, Janovy succumbed to Tsutarja's attacks and fainted, leaving Shooti with three Pokémon.

As Ash celebrates, Pikachu jumps with joy and Tsutarja gives a wide smile. Shooti recalls Janovy and while admitting he did not expect the move Attract, Ash recalls his Tsutarja. For the next round, Shooti sent out his third Pokémon: a Pururiru. Ash checks his Pokédex, then sends out Mamepato.

Mamepato begins by using Air Cutter, but was blocked by Pururiru's Protect. Shooti tells Pururiru to use Water Pulse, and the Floating Pokémon shot a ball of water at Mamepato, causing her to be trapped in the sphere. As the Baby Pigeon Pokémon struggled to breathe, the sphere of water suddenly exploded, sending her flying towards a window, and causing her to faint. Don George then declares Mamepato unable to battle. Ash is now left with Tsutarja.

As Ash sends out Tsutarja and tells her to use Vine Whip, Dent gasps loudly and Iris shouts out immediately in protest. Ash was elated that he managed to hit Pururiru, but he became shocked the moment he saw Tsutarja: she seemed to have taken a curse of some sort and was emitting a dark bluish-purple aura. Shooti then talks about Pururiru's Cursed Body ability, and was further explained by Iris who lambasted him for being ignorant and acting like a small child.

Tsutarja attacks again with Leaf Storm, but Pururiru blocks it with Protect, followed by a Night Shade: the partial Ghost Pokémon glows purple for a moment, and blasts purple waves at Tsutarja, causing it to lose balance and fall to the ground on its knees. As Pururiru celebrates its achievement, Tsutarja uses Leaf Storm and catches Pururiru by surprise. Immediately, Tsutarja attempts to use Attract, but fails as Pururiru evades it, jumping away at the time when the Attract is supposed to hit its target.

Seemingly irritated, Ash asks Tsutarja to use Leaf Blade on Pururiru, which surprises Dent and Iris even further. Had he not learnt about the opponent's ability when Tsutarja used Vine Whip? True enough, it seemed as if Pururiru allowed Tsutarja to attack it with Leaf Blade: Pururiru now reactivated its Cursed Body and Tsutarja is afflicted by its curse. Shooti commands Pururiru to use Water Pulse again: Pururiru creates a ball of water to form and shoots it at Tsutarja who became trapped inside. As the globe of water exploded, Tsutarja was flung out onto the field, confused.

Shooti now takes advantage of the situation, telling Pururiru to use Evil Eye. As Tsutarja was already confused, the attack did more damage. Tsutarja's eyes glowed eerily before she could not take it anymore, and fainted. Don George then declared Tsutarja unable to battle, and subsequently Shooti the winner of the match. Ash recalled Tsutarja.

At the end of the battle, Shooti taunts Ash about the trainer he still is when his Pikachu battled his Tsutarja, and takes his leave. Right before the door closes, Ash challenges him to another battle in the future, but he was not interested, stating that he will not battle a trainer that does not know his basics. As the door closes, Iris and Dent offer to help Ash with his training to which he agrees, determined to surpass Shooti and to become the best trainer that ever lived.
