Azelf (Japanese: アグノム Agnome) is a Template:Type2 legendary Pokémon.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Azelf is the third member of the lake guardians, the Sinnoh region's Template:Type2 legendary Pokémon trio.

Biology

Physiology

Azelf is a small, grayish blue, fairy-like Pokémon. It has two tails that each have a red jewel on them. These are, presumably, two of the jewels which complement the Red Chain. Azelf has a partially cyan face with another red gem encrusted into its forehead. Azelf has a cone-shaped head with elf ear-like protrusions on each side.

Gender differences

Azelf is genderless, although it is referred to as a male in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness.

Special abilities

Azelf's spirit can leave its body without dying. Its spirit can return to the body at will. Azelf has the ability to control one's will, according to the Sinnoh Pokémon Handbook. It can also enter the body of another Pokémon or a human. According to legend, if Azelf is harmed it can cause humans to lose all will inside of them, making them completely immobile for all eternity. It was also shown in The Needs of the Three! and The Battle Finale of Legend! that Azelf has the ability to teleport itself, as well as other Pokémon and humans.

Behavior

Azelf can be very cautious around people and Pokémon but when it feels threatened it will reveal its bold side.

Habitat

Azelf sleeps beneath Lake Valor.

In the anime

Azelf in the anime
Main article: Lake guardians (anime)

Azelf appeared in spirit form (much like Mesprit did to Dawn in Following a Maiden's Voyage) to Ash in Pruning a Passel of Pals!.

Azelf first appeared in its physical form in The Needs of the Three!, where it was the first to be captured by J and Team Galactic. It was then controlled by the team to help fulfill its goal. In The Battle Finale of Legend!, after breaking from their control with the help of Ash's Pikachu and Staraptor, it helped in stopping Cyrus's plot to use Dialga and Palkia.

Pokémon Adventures

Azelf in the manga

Azelf appeared briefly to Diamond and Pearl when they were trying to find Platinum at Lake Valor. Later, Pearl is sent to guard Azelf from Team Galactic. He was chosen because, fittingly, he is very hyper when compared to the calm Diamond or the knowledgable Platinum.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl

On the Spear Pillar stage, occasionally the lake guardians make surprising "cameo" appearances during the fight; however, they do nothing.

Trophy Information

A Willpower Pokémon. Born from the same Egg as Uxie and Mesprit, this Pokémon maintains the balance of things in the world from the bottom of Lake Valor. Trivia

Origin

Azelf appears to be a pixie or a fairy, although its name suggests that it's an elf. Azelf and the rest of the trio could possibly have originated from the Imperial Regalia of Japan, which are also called the Three Sacred Treasures. Azelf would be the Kusanagi, which embodies valor.

Name origin

Azelf comes from azure and elf or us and elf. Its Japanese name most likely comes from a combination of agnosticism (アグノスティシズム 'agunosutishizumu' in Japanese, from the Greek root 'gnostic' meaning knowledge) and gnome.
