Sturdy (Japanese: がんじょう Sturdy) is an Ability introduced in Generation III. Thirty-two Pokémon have this Ability.
Effect
In battle
Generations III and IV
Sturdy negates one-hit knockout moves.
Generation V
In addition to Sturdy's previous effect, Sturdy now works like a Focus Sash, causing the Pokémon to have 1 HP remaining if an attack's hit would have brought it from full health to 0 HP. Sturdy will activate as long as a Pokémon has full HP, and can therefore be used multiple times if brought back to full health. If a Pokémon with Sturdy is holding a Focus Sash, Sturdy will activate first. If a Pokémon with Sturdy uses Final Gambit while at full HP, it will still faint.
Multi-hit moves and Destiny Bond can break through Sturdy, much like Focus Sash. When a multi-hit move hits a Pokémon with Sturdy, Sturdy's effect activates only for the move's first hit only, and all consecutive hits can potentially KO the target.
Outside of battle
Sturdy has no effect outside of battle.

When Roggenrola is hit with a powerful attack, it doesn't get hurt much from it. Also, when Roggenrola is hit with a one-hit knockout move, it stays in its place and does nothing. The move is then canceled on the spot.

Trivia
- In Generation V, if Sturdy were obtained on Shedinja through using a move like Worry Seed on Shedinja to allow Sturdy to be Skill Swapped, it would be able to activate for every attack.
- Sawk is the only Pokémon with Sturdy which is not Rock, Ground or Steel-type or related to one by evolution.
