The Pokémon Gold and Silver Spaceworld demo is an early build of the games Pokémon Gold and Silver. As such, this build of the game was running off a build of the Japanese Pokémon Blue as the Gameboy Color had not yet been announced at the time. As the game was still in development at the time and it was later announced that the release date would be pushed back due to employees being exhausted, this build of the game is drastically different from the finished game.

Pokémon

100 new Pokémon had been made at this time but not all of them were used or they ended up being redesigned. 60 Pokémon got either minor changes or redesigned then released in Generation II, 29 Pokémon received various changes and ended up released in later generations while 13 Pokémon ended up going entirely unused altogether.

Many of the Generation I Pokémon were still using their Pokémon Blue sprites as placeholder sprites during this time. Leafeon and Lickilicky were originally intended to be released during Generation II. Several Pokémon would have also gained either an evolution or a Baby Pokémon pre-evolution.

Maps

The map of Johto is incredibly different from the final game's map design. Many of the towns, cities, and caves also had different points of entry or designs altogether. The map itself at this time was based on Japan as a whole and Kanto was also incorporated into a smaller map too. Three of the cities (New Type, North, and Blue Forest) bear a striking resemblance to Canalave City and Snowpoint City from Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Versions.

Minigames

This build of the game contained far more minigames; with a total of 5! Only one of the minigames would end up going anywhere. The Picross minigame was eventually made into its own game altogether called Pokémon Picross. The Poker minigame was Poker but with various Pokémon on the cards instead of clubs, diamonds, hearts, and spades. Shinkei (Memory game) is a game where you had to try getting 5 pairs matched in 5 turns but there is no coins rewarded for any matches at all. This game is still in the final game but unused. A hidden minigame involving Pikachu from the title screen will start to play out if you leave the game idle at the title screen for an extended period of time. The player tries to avoid obstacles and collect musical notes while catching up to {{p|Jigglypuff}. The game ends once Pikachu catches up to Jigglypuff and will return to the title screen. The last minigame is a 15 tile slide puzzle game where the player has to try rearranging the tiles to reveal who the Pokémon is.

Items

Various items were either cut, had slight changes in how they worked or were scrapped altogether.

Miscellaneous

  • Songs from Pokémon Pokémon Red and Green are used here as placeholders.
  • Generation I Pokédex entries are carried over to here while all Generation II Pokédex entries are the same exact placeholder text as Pokédex entries from the Generation II Pokémon had not yet been written.
  • The player is not able to Save the game as this was a demo meant to be played by the public at Spaceworld '97.
