The origin of his name.

Does "Surge" be a name or a surname? Where does it derives from? What does it mean? - unsigned comment from Siegfried (talkcontribs)

A surge, in English, is a rush of electric current. It is most definitely his last name, as per military conventions; Dwight D. Eisenhower was General Eisenhower. evkl 09:41, 11 December 2005 (CST)

Thank You! - unsigned comment from Siegfried (talkcontribs)

More like Lt. JG Surge, according to his rank insignia. --Dr. Forrester 02:00, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

What insignia? Morgil27 19:58, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

Pikachu → Raichu?

Should it really be counted as that under the Pokémon in the Anime section? I mean, we never saw it as a Pikachu...so, idk.

It was specifically stated that Lt. Surge had evolved it from a Pikachu rather than catching it as a Raichu. That was an important plot point, even. --FabuVinny T-C-S 02:46, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

Hometown Vermillion?

Is that really his hometown? I mean his title is "The Lightning American" so I'm guessing he's from America. Should we put it as unknown?

This might seem like a stupid question but I think it's something to think about. --ケンジガール 01:42, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

you bring up a good point, but we dont know for sure where the "pokemon nation" is. it may be in america, it may be japan. on the contrary, this being the poke resource, it think unknown would work best. leave no loop-holes. -- MAGNEDETH 01:46, 27 April 2008 (UTC)
Well we do know that America exists in the Pokémon world. Remember that episode where Ash and co. went to Hollywood to see a movie. Not to mention that it's Meowth's hometown. I assume that the Pokémon regions are supposed to exist in Japan since the regions are based on it. --ケンジガール 01:51, 27 April 2008 (UTC)
ok, that means Vermillion is in Japan, so, no, it isnt his hometown. -- MAGNEDETH 01:53, 27 April 2008 (UTC)
This is a question that comes up frequently in my mind. Most glaringly about Lt. Surge. "He's the Lightning American" he's a military officer and he's been in a "War." I would like very much to know where these things occurred. For example: Is there an America? If we are assuming from the Anime that Japan is where many of the Pokemon games are set then we can also assume that since they go to Hollywood mention "Chinese Food" that there is a rest of the world, and it's similar to ours. Ok, so that much taken at face value...what war was he in? In Red and Blue there's some mention that there was a "War" and he was involved. in FR/LG other trainers and people claim that he saved them in the war, and that an electric Pokemon had saved him, and that he was a pilot. Possible I suppose, but then we are to glean from these tidbits, that 1) Lt. Surge is an Air Force or Navy pilot Officer, and 2) That Pokemon were used in warfare at least at some point in history. Which is the part of the Pokemon history I want to see cannon material about. --Ginocoolowski 20:52, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

Japanese name

Is it possible that his Japanese is spelt like Matisse instead of Machisu. It said that his Korean name is a transliteration of Matisse so why couldn't his Japanese name be the same? I believe Machisu can be a transliteration of Matisse.

As for why they named him Matisse, I think it might have to do with the software company and not the actual artist. I think it's worth investigating. --ケンジガール 21:37, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

And again, I am ignored. Maybe I should ask Maxim. --ケンジガール 22:36, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
His name used to be Matisse. I don't know who changed it back to Machisu. Satosuke 07:37, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

I see the article calls him the “エレクトリック American.” Where does this come from? I just checked in Green, where the gym sign says “イナズマ American.” IIMarckus 02:02, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

Might be FRLG, rather than just plain RGBY. TTEchidna 04:41, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
Could be. Can anyone confirm? IIMarckus 05:04, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

Anyone else catch this?

Am I the only one that caught this? He will ask for a Pikachu between 9AM and 11AM. It's a coincidence b/c 9/11 and he's an American soldier.--Midnight Blue 06:05, 23 November 2009 (UTC)

That's a bit extreme.--ForceFire 06:59, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
Just disregard this section.--Midnight Blue 07:07, 23 November 2009 (UTC)
Interesting... Is this HGSS? CuboneKing 22:17, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
It is, force fire said it's extreme, but it's interesting. Do I hear "We need an admin"?--Midnight Blue 22:18, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
I is a bit extreme, but rather interesting. Yeah, ask an admin, but we don't want to have this again... CuboneKing 22:21, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
I think that we should put it in Trivia, but ask an admin to be sure. --Kimori Geckarbor Hinoarashi 22:26, 25 November 2009 (UTC) User talk:Kimori-Hinoarashi "I reject your reality, and substitute my own." - Adam Savage.
I'm gonna vote no, but feel free to ask someone else if you aren't happy with that answer.--RexRacer 23:35, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
I don't really think so. It's probably coincidence. R.A. Hunter Blade 03:14, 26 November 2009 (UTC)
It is a coincidence and that it's released on September 12.--Midnight Blue 03:40, 26 November 2009 (UTC)
I've just picked up his phone number and Volty, the French Pikachu. I did this at 11:50 to 11:55, so he appears from 9am to 12pm, so this story is not even close to true. JiEToy (talk) 11:08, 11 March 2014 (UTC)
Are you sure? We just changed over from Daylight Savings Time, so if you forgot to change the time on your DS, the game would think it's 10:50 when it's really 11:50. Pumpkinking0192 (talk) 17:37, 11 March 2014 (UTC)

His Red Team

His Red/Green/Blue team is wrong, it says his Pikachu is level 21, but I saw a video and it was level 18, and yes I was sure it was in Red/Blue. Pokemon champ 22:34, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

Hey, that looks like...

Since I'm new here I won't try and edit the page just yet, instead I'll see if a few people agree with this point and think it's worth adding to the page. His HG/SS artwork looks a hell of a lot like Guile from Street Fighter to me. Does anything think this was intentional? Regardless, is it worth putting on his Trivia? - unsigned comment from ReloadXPsi (talkcontribs)

Comparisons are generally frowned upon in trivia. :V 梅子 00:20, 19 May 2010 (UTC)
Gotcha. I'll let it go.ReloadXPsi 02:35, 19 May 2010 (UTC)
Honestly, he reminds me of Duke Nukem in his HGSS artwork... Agent1022 12:09, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

Illegal Pokémon?

Surge has a Magnezone. That's unobtainable in HGSS right? Miscs 16:09, 10 December 2010 (UTC)

Maybe he traveled to Sinnoh like Jasmine (who also has Magnezone) or to Unovated States and evolved it.----無限の知性DENNOUZENSHI 16:21, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
Unova was introduced after HGSS came out? And does Jasmine say she went to Sinnoh? Miscs 16:23, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
The Lieutenant loves to travel so I wouldn't put it past him. He gave me a French Pikachu and went on about how he likes other languages. Jo the Marten ಠ_ಠ 16:26, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
But it's not solid fact is it? Miscs 16:31, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
I'll add it to trivia anyway, seeing as we're not going to be able to solve this. Miscs 16:47, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
Or maybe he traded with someone from Sinnoh. I don't think it's a huge deal. —darklordtrom 07:47, 13 December 2010 (UTC)

American

Ok, he's called the Lightning American. Where is America in the World of Pokémon?--Darknesslover5000 07:03, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

Poké Ball that Lt. Surge is holding

I was doing some edits on some sprites for a webcomic, and I noticed the colors on Lt. Surge's Poké Ball on the Fire Red and Leaf Green sprite. What Poké Ball is he holding? Does anyone know? Pokedex493 20:06, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

Spr FRLG Lt Surge.png

There's six pixels of color there. It's practically impossible to make out what kind of ball it is. Besides, it's probably not significant. Sprites have a limit on the number of colors they can contain, and to save space they probably just used a color from elsewhere on the sprite (in this case, the shading on his hair). --AndyPKMN (talk) 20:36, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

"Lt. Surge" is American . Is this explanation described only in a original Japanese version?

I want to describe, "original Japanese version only". Sawamular101 03:50, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

He's known as "The Lightning American" in English. It's not a Japanese-exclusive thing. --ケンジガール 04:00, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
Thank you for the explanation. I thought the setting to have been changed. Sawamular101 04:12, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

Homeland retcon?

I just now noticed that the man in black in the lobby of the PWT building says that Surge is actually from Unova. I'm guessing this is cuz Unova is supposed to be based on America. Morgil27 (talk) 06:01, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

No he doesn't. He wonders if Surge is from Unova. Ataro (talk) 06:14, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

Name Romanization

Matisse This was deleted from the talk page without even being reviewed, amazing. I put it in the old conversation because I didn't want to create a repeated thread. Trainer Lurker (talk) 05:43, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

Voice actors

So considering the release of Pokémon Masters, I beleive we need to update the listing for his voice actors. So far, I know that in English he is voiced by Patrick Seitz, as I can tell just by ear. It's a tone very similar to the one he used for Magnus in Super Smash Bros. for WiiU & 3DS. --Tailikku (talk) 16:49, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
