Important

The sun & moon shards are NOT related to the sun & moon stones. They are simply used as an alternative to the happiness method, allowing the player to select either Umbreon or Espeon WITHOUT ending up with the evolution opposite of what they want because it is too happy at the wrong time of day.

I think it's more that XD can't read the GCN clock, for whatever reason, and because they wanted to allow people to get any of the Eeveelutions instantly. Besides, the Oval Stone's here... and that's a held item. In fact, I'd wonder whether or not Moss Rock and Ice Rock belong here, too. --TTEchidna 16:34, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
I'd say that only items that you use on a Pokémon to evolve them instantly should be here. -Happy Mask Man 18:23, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

Can't you read TTEchidna? That's what I meant!Gatogirl

What you said was that it was as an alternative to Happiness, which would imply that the day/night happiness was accessible in XD. And anyway, what other point do either the Sun or Moon Shards have besides evolution? Metal Coat evolves by attachment, Razor Claw evolves by attachment, but both of them have another purpose. --TTEchidna 16:41, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

In Emerald, does the Everstone have any effect other than preventing evolution? I ask because it seems as though all time-based effects, like berries growing, stop whenever pokemon in my party are holding an Everstone. But maybe it's just a coincidence, and the berries not growing is unrelated... --Waterboy 20:02, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

No, in Emerald the only thing it does is stop evolution and if you give it to a Pokemon in the breeding center, it has a 50% chance of passing down the holder's nature to the baby. TinaTheKirlia ♥ 02:53, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

Water stone locations

In pokemon crystal I got a water stone from Fisher Tully. Perhaps other ways of getting the various stones should be mentioned or something. Also google says that Danna Lass gives Thunderstones. These are only in crystal though, but still worth mentioning.

--Scwizard 17:37, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

Pokégear. I'll add them in, I guess. TTEchidna 22:15, 19 October 2007 (UTC)
...is there any other place besides giving a Blue Shard to that one guy in Emerald to get a Water Stone? D: Tina δ 02:16, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

Thunderstone in New Mauville

There is a Thunderstone in New Mauville (at least in "Pokémon Emerald"). Shouldn't it be mentioned?

If there actually is one, then yes it should be mentionedPokeManiac102 14:40, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

There is also a Thunderstone in New Mauville in Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire. -MasterKenobi

Moon/Sun Shard

Despite the fact that there is the item Moon Shard and Sun Shard, can evolve via normal means, or is there no timeframe, similar to FR and LG? Also, is it an item that is transferrable to the GBA games? ht14 14:25, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

Never mind... ht14 22:22, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Everstone

does it actually have a 50% chance of passing on the nature if given to a female mating with a ditto. Ive hatched 5 so far and Sassy has come up twice. Which isnt the nature i want. --Guardian of Earth |SGMS 2010 13:13, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

There's another 50 left. tc26 13:16, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
Yeah but where is the proof for this. It looks like fanon, and now ive hatched 7 youd expect at least one to have the nature. --Guardian of Earth |SGMS 2010 13:21, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
It depends on the percentage and YOUR luck everytime. Even if you hatch a million, you might not get the desired nature. I had experiences like that and mine was more that ten. Just BE PATIENT. tc26 13:47, 30 August 2008 (UTC) I hate it when the site has problems.
It also depends on the game. Everstone breeding does not work in any games before Emerald. IIMarckus 00:44, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

In FireRed/LeafGreen, one of prof. Oaks Aides gives you an everstone in the pokecenter by the rock tunel if you have 20 or more pokemon in your pokedex. Just though you guys might want to add that.

Firestone and Thunderstone!?

What about:

Leaf Stone
Gloom
Weepinbell
Exeggcute
Moon Stone
Nidorina
Nidorino
Clefairy
Jigglypuff
Thunderstone
Pikachu
Eevee
Waterstone
Poliwhirl
Shellder
Staryu
Eevee

So this:

So far, only Generation I Pokémon can use the Fire Stone and Thunderstone, only Generation II Pokémon
can use the Dusk Stone, and only Generation III Pokémon can use the Dawn Stone.

The Moon Stone, Leaf Stone, and Water Stone are the only stones introduced in one generation that evolve
Pokémon introduced in a later generation.

is false.

D.S.B. Pan·da·mo·ni·a 20:18, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

What exactly are you saying is false? The Moon Stone evolves Skitty...Leaf Stone evolves Nuzleaf...and Water evolves Lombre. -Sketch 20:21, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
Probably the wording in the second half. "a later generation" does not apply to the Dusk and Dawn stones. Other than that, it looks okay to me. --Galladeon 21:05, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
Oh, I thought it said that G1 pokes could only use the Fire Stone and Thunderstone. Pan·da·mo·ni·a 01:53, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
That is also true. — THE TROM — 04:17, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

Pokemon Evolutionary Stones in Ruby/Sapphire

An Everstone can be found in Granite Cave. A Fire Stone can be found on the Fiery Path. A Leaf Stone can be found on Route 119. A Moon Stone can be found at Meteor Falls and also stolen from wild Lunatone (only found in Sapphire). A Sun Stone can be found at the Mossdeep City space research center and also stolen from wild Solrock (only found in Ruby). A Water Stone can be found in the Abandoned Ship. A Thunder Stone can be found in New Mauville. -MasterKenobi

Fake Leaf Stone???

What's with the picture of a "fake leaf stone" in the leaf stone section. --Usyflad10 (talk) 05:15, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

Cause it's the only Leaf Stone seen in the anime. --ケンジガール 05:41, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
Oh i didnt know that we were only supposed to use anime pictures. --Usyflad10 (talk) 05:53, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
If I remember it right, there was a real one in the Pikachu short for the fourth movie. It caused an Exeggcute to evolve. tc²₆tc26 05:55, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
Darn. I don't have that movie on DVD or else I'd get it. Anyway, that's fine for now. --ケンジガール 06:44, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
I just checked. There isn't a clear image of the Stone. It appears as a minor detail. And it just looks like a small rock. No view of the leaf. --ルレ 07:22, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
Actually, at the end of the Pikachu short from Pokémon 2000, an Exeggute evolves into Exeggutor using a real Leaf Stone. It actually clearly is a Leaf Stone too, leaf pattern and all. --Raylax 11:21, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

HGSS locations

We need those. I know a bunch of the Gen IV stones can be bought after winning Pokéthlon races. I don't know the prices though. --ケンジガール 20:12, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

Suggestion of added note

"Dawn Stone This stone was first introduced in Generation IV."

"Trivia

  • So far, only Generation I Pokémon can use the Fire Stone and Thunderstone, only Generation II Pokémon can use the Dusk Stone, and only Generation III Pokémon can use the Dawn Stone."

The second quoted section seems to imply that the Dawn Stone was introduced in Generation III. I personally think that some form of clarification should be added to make sure people realize that the Dawn Stone was not added until Generation IV, but simply only works on Pokémon added in Generation III.

Zellfaze 22:08, 12 October 2009 (UTC)

Umm could they say they can only "work" with the Dawn Stone?--Midnight Blue 22:14, 12 October 2009 (UTC)

GSC descriptions

Loading up my Gold, all six I have have "Evolves certain kinds of POKéMON." as the description. Should I still add it or should we bother? Salix 05:09, 24 January 2010 (UTC)

Do Oval and Everstones count?

Do the Oval Stone and Everstone really count as evolutionary stones? Yes, they're stones, and they effect evolution, but they are held items. An official evolutionary stone has to be directly used on a Pokémon for it to work doesn't it? Taromon 15:18, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

Oh and another thing; Pokémon that evolve using official stones never evolve again, but Happiny evolves again into Blissey after using the Oval Stone. The Oval Stone is an "Evolution-inducing held item" (I've noticed it's listed in that article as well) but it's not an official Evolutionary stone. Taromon 15:22, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, can we remove 'Oval Stone' from this article? It doesn't belong here at all. Bttsstewart 06:45, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

I dunno if I agree with that... the Oval Stone's given out by the Bug-Catching Contest, while the Everstone's given out by Bill's grandpa. Both are found underground. They're a different kind of evostone than the others... but that doesn't make them any less of one. Plus, hey, Gen IV messed with a lot of preconceived notions we had. Like trade-evos never evolving again (Porygon2). TTEchidna 07:09, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

Moon/Sun Shard info removed?

Why was the information on the Moon and Sun Shards in XD removed? Searching for them also still redirects to this page. -Convoy

Shiny stone in HG/SS

Just received a Shiny stone thanks to a phone call by Bird keeper Josh on route 14. Adding it.--Kirochi 15:48, 26 April 2010 (UTC)

You can get one in the Pokéathalon Dome and National Park. (National park note: You need cut and rock climb.)

Getting Stones in HGSS

I didnt get any Leaf Stone ever from Gina after rematch. why is this so? --Ruixiang95 04:10, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

I believe that just like in Crystal, she'll often call you specifically if she has a Leaf Stone for you, and normally you won't need to battle to get it. Werdnae (talk) 04:18, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

Moon Stone

Anyone notice how 4 different Pokemon evolve by a Moon Stone in Generation I, but only 3 of them are able to be found in that same Generation? Shiramu Kuromu 18:32, 1 February 2011 (UTC)

What? All four are obtainable in Generation I. --HoennMaster 23:44, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
It says just Route 2, Mt. Moon, and Team Rocket's base have them.... Why is there two in the same area that I don't know about? Shiramu Kuromu 11:06, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

Edit: Nevermind about that then. There's two in Mt. Moon it seems. I will say that the Moon Stone in B/W CAN be bought at Black City. Shouldn't the price be mentioned in that case? Shiramu Kuromu 11:09, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

EDIT: For some reason, the template only allows prices from the Celadon Department store, so they can only be listed as 2100. We need to change the template.--jda95 11:14, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
I know how to do it. What is the price in Black City? Also, can you add the shop to Black City? --SnorlaxMonster 11:21, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

Sun Stone in Platinum

I just found a hidden Sun Stone at Hotel Grand Lake. To get to it, go to the east end of Route 213, surf off the east coast of the beach and go north. Then you rock climb north three times and then press A to pick it up. The Sun Stone is mentioned in the Hotel Grand Lake article but not in the Evolutionary Stone article. I just thought I'd point that out. And if anyone were to confirm this and edit the article, that would be nice because I'd probably mess up the page if I were to try to edit it. Thank you.

--Eternal End 18:12, 4 May 2011 (UTC)

I found another hidden Sun Stone at Mt. Coronet. To get to it, head to the outside area of Mt. Coronet (snow covered) from the southern cavern. Then enter the "H" entrance, as labeled in the picture subtitled "Outside area" in the Mt. Coronet article page. Rock climb up the wall. In your screen there should be 3 rocks and 3 breakable rocks. Break the north-most rock, and to the left, there should be a Sun Stone hidden in the non-breakable rock. Again, if anyone were to confirm this, and edit the article, it would be appreciated. Thank you.

Edit: I forgot to mention that the location of this Sun Stone is also not mentioned in the Mt. Coronet article.

Moon Stone in Platinum

I found a hidden Moon Stone at Mt. Coronet. To get to it, head to the outside area of Mt. Coronet (snow covered) from the southern cavern. Outside entrance "I", as labeled in the picture subtitled "Outside area" in the Mt. Coronet article page, head all the way north. There should be a lonesome rock surrounded by grass (it can even be seen in the picture, "Outside area") with the Moon Stone in it. Also, this is not mentioned in the Mt. Coronet article.

--Eternal End 20:09, 4 May 2011 (UTC)

Everstone on Mt. Moon in FR/LG?

No way. Idk who put it, but there is no Everstone there. Article about Mt. Moon does not mention Everstone. Also I checked like entire cave and no Everstone. I guess I will have to hunt for Geodude with it (as I think I won't get 20 Pokémon in Nidoran♀-only run since other Pokémon will be either for HM or for using items...). catch Moon Stone Pokémon with Moon Ball?

"Though six Pokémon evolve with the Moon Stone, only four of them can be legitimately owned inside a Moon Ball: Skitty is only available in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver through trade or via Pokéwalker, and Munna was not introduced until Generation V, where the Moon Ball is not available to be used." How is catching a Skitty with a Moon Ball not possible? Can't I just trade a Pokémon which holds a Moon Ball to DPP and use the ball there to catch one? Peterpansexuell 16:27, 24 October 2011 (UTC)

Apricorn Balls weren't even in the coding of DPPt.--MisterE13 16:44, 24 October 2011 (UTC)
Apricorn Balls cannot be held. --SnorlaxMonster 08:03, 26 October 2011 (UTC)

Effective while holding an everstone?

Are evolutionary stones still effective if the Pokémon is holding an everstone? For example, if I give a Vulpix an Everstone to hold, and I try to administer a Fire Stone, will it evolve? In other words, which stone takes priority? - unsigned comment from Tk3141 (talkcontribs)

Evolution stone overrides the everstone--SandmanDP 00:55, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

Sun Stone

Can a Sun Stone be traded to FRLG before obtaining the National Pokedex? If so, what happens if it is used on Gloom? (I assume it won't evolve, but will the Sun Stone be lost as well?) Tk3141 23:19, 6 March 2012 (UTC)

As long as I have known, I have been unable to transfer any Generation II or III Pokemon to FR/LG before getting the National Pokedex. It seems to be further enforced by having to get those two stones in order to import Pokemon from Colosseu, XD, or R/S/E. Frozen Fennec 23:25, 6 March 2012 (UTC)
What will happen, then? I know that when I trade, for example, a Scyther holding a Metal Coat to a FRLG game without the NP, it starts evolving before the evolution is automatically canceled, with "???" appearing. In addition, the Scyther is still holding the Metal Coat after the trade. Might the same thing happen with Gloom and evolutionary stones, with the stone reappearing in the bag? (If anyone is willing to possibly waste a Sun Stone, it seems like this would be useful to know.) By the way, you need the Ruby and the Sapphire to trade with RSE. Tk3141 00:22, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

Moon Ball + Skitty ?

This was noted in the Trivia section as impossible, since you can't encounter wild Skitty in Kanto or Johto. However you can catch wild Skitty in Sinnoh during a mass outbreak, and you can(?) trade Moon Balls to DPP by having a Pokémon hold them first.

...at least in theory... anyone want to try doing this? --Stratelier 01:09, 17 January 2013 (UTC)

"Mahogany Town after defeating Team Rocket"

If it's there, it's invisible. Will someone confirm that this is incorrect?

Invshika (talk) 05:10, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

It's not on the Mahogany Town page either, so I went ahead and removed it. If it turns out to actually exist and someone does find it, can they please add it to the Mahogany Town article's items section with a description of where in the town it's found? Thanks. Pumpkinking0192 (talk) 05:31, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
Actually, on a second glance in the page history, it appears a user with no other edits added it as either vandalism or accidentally putting something in the wrong place. It looks like they were trying to say it can be bought at Mahogany Town, which it clearly can't. Case closed? Pumpkinking0192 (talk) 05:34, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

I'm sorry, I made an account for the express purpose of adding this. I played Gold using an emulator so either my copy of the game was edited, or a Fire Stone as well as a few other Evolutionary stones can really be bought from the old lady in Mahogany Town and I'm the only person in the world that knows it. I can replay the game again and get screenshots of this if you need additional proof that this is not just speculation or me being a troll. I'm 99% sure this is fact. I had an un-evolved Eevee in my party and when I talked to the old lady in the shop, please try to imagine my surprise when she offered to sell me the stones. Why is the everstone entry still on this page?

Shouldn't it be moved to the "evolution-inducing held items" page? It seems to have more in common with those items. sumwun (talk) 00:51, 27 May 2016 (UTC)

It is on because it affects an evolution, and it is a stone, so it is an evolutionary stone when you think about it. - unsigned comment from Joemoebob (talkcontribs)
If that's the case, why was oval stone moved to the other page? I think the "held items" aspect of it is more important than the "stone" aspect. sumwun (talk) 04:08, 15 June 2016 (UTC)
Um... How about because you put it there. Please don't play games.
Frankly, the Oval StoneEverstone doesn't really belong on either page. Some day we may sort it out. In the meantime, it's rather low priority (except perhaps insofar as it confuses people who want to link to it and have two options). Tiddlywinks (talk) 04:18, 15 June 2016 (UTC)
Forgive me if I'm confused, but didn't sumwun ask who put the Oval Stone entry there? The change you linked to shows them adding the everstone. The Oval Stone was there when the page was created. slimey01 14:19, 15 June 2016 (UTC)
Oh. Well... #$@&%*! me. (On the other hand, that doesn't appear to have been on this page for over 5 years... I expected sumwun was talking about something actually recent.)
At any rate... The rest of my response stands. And the Oval Stone and Everstone aren't incredibly similar either. Tiddlywinks (talk) 14:43, 15 June 2016 (UTC)
Does that mean we can delete the everstone from both pages? sumwun (talk) 15:24, 15 June 2016 (UTC)
IMO, if you want to remove the Everstone from Evolution-inducing held item, where you added it recently, that's fine (the wiki will just be back to the old status quo for the Everstone). If you want to remove it from both, first you need to suggest where else it belongs better. Tiddlywinks (talk) 15:30, 15 June 2016 (UTC)
I could create a new page...is that okay? sumwun (talk) 18:04, 15 June 2016 (UTC)
Right now, it's not that notable. We (staff) have a vague hope of eventually giving all items individual pages, but until we might make that happen, we'll mostly have to stick by our current scheme of most items being on some aggregate page. Tiddlywinks (talk) 18:09, 15 June 2016 (UTC)
Would it be a better idea to add this to the "out-of-battle effect item" page? sumwun (talk) 23:17, 15 June 2016 (UTC)
Yup, perfect! Done. Tiddlywinks (talk) 01:04, 16 June 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. I'm kinda glad it's over. sumwun (talk) 23:44, 16 June 2016 (UTC)

This can't just be me...

When I play the final secret training, I occasionally get stones. Is it just me, or does this happen to others as well? (P.S. On ORAS, haven't done supertraining on X & Y yet.) - unsigned comment from Joemoebob (talkcontribs)

It does. There are quite a few pages that still need to be updated with the Global Link minigame rewards and the Secret Training rewards for ORAS. --Super goku (talk) 05:08, 15 June 2016 (UTC)

Move

"Advanced Tips! Eevee is a Pokémon with great potential. Try experimenting with many things, such as certain locations, times of day, and Evolution stones." (Pokémon X and Y, Snowbelle City)

"I guess lots of stores here sell Evolution stones." (Clemont at 2:10, The Cave of Trials!)

"Yes, I know those! A Water Stone, Fire Stone, Thunderstone, Leaf Stone, Moon Stone, Sun Stone, Shiny Stone, Dusk Stone, and Dawn Stone. They're all Evolution Stones!" (Cilan at 17:54, Mystery on a Deserted Island!)

"Use Evolution Stones and fill out your Pokédex" (p. 378, Pokémon Platinum: Prima's Official Strategy Guide)

"The final special Evolution category includes those Pokémon, such as Volpix and Pikachu, who won't evolve into their final forms (Ninetails and Raichu, respectively) without the use of a specific Evolution Stone. Simply use their respective Evolution Stone to trigger their immediate evolution." (p. 7, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen: Prima's Official Strategy Guide)

I haven't found any official material that refer to them as "evolutionary stones"; most of the references to them from the past decade or so refer to them as "Evolution stones". --Abcboy (talk) 04:02, 18 September 2016 (UTC)

According to the blurb, Oak gives a lecture on "Evolutionary stones" in DP139. Note the capitalization.
Anyway, I still support the move. Is there any reason not to move it to "Evolution Stone", though? Given it's also "Fire Stone" etc., I'd prefer that capitalization.
Regarding the recent addition of "element Stone": that's a strange capitalization; couldn't it be more like "<an element> Stone" (..→ "Fire Stone")? That is, a bit less of an official name? The jp names don't even differ, so I guess it's at least not a translation. Nescientist (talk) 09:24, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
If all the examples Abcboy has given are correctly capitalized, the in-game spelling in XY, "Evolution stone," would trump the guidebooks' "Evolution Stone" spelling both by virtue of being in-game and by virtue of being more recent. Pumpkinking0192 (talk) 18:50, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
All the examples from the anime are capitalized based on the CCs; the other references have the same capitalization as the source material.
On Celadon Dept. Store 4F, it is rendered as "element STONEs". --Abcboy (talk) 11:01, 19 September 2016 (UTC)
After Pumpkinking's explanation, I agree to the move to the proposed capitalization then.
I'm inclined to hold on to the "<element> Stone" theory from above. Even then, however, that might not affect how the article should handle things; the capitalization is now clear. Thanks.
It seems strange to have a single Japanese term translated to four English terms, two of which are one and the same. It might be what it should be, but after the move at least, we should get rid of this. After all, it's a localization issue. Nescientist (talk) 15:19, 20 September 2016 (UTC)

"Advanced Tips // Eevee is a Pokémon bursting with possibilities. Take it to different places, or even try some Evolution stones on it!" (Pokémon Sun and Moon, Konikoni City) iAM soViet19 04:09, 23 December 2016 (UTC)

No stance on the capitalization, but definitely move to Evolution stone. AnAwesomeArticleEditor (talk) 12:54, 18 March 2017 (UTC)

You can get a Sun Stone in Shalour City in XY by giving a hiker east of the Pokemon Center the Intriguing Stone after battling Calem/Serena in the Tower of Mastery. Probably could leave out the details since they're in the Shalour City page. But that should be put in there. Voltdetector (talk) 21:56, 12 October 2016 (UTC)

That's already listed on this page. --Carmen (Talk | contribs) 03:16, 13 October 2016 (UTC)

Idea

Stones are a pain to acquire in ORAS. And I was unaware until today that trainers might give you one. So maybe a refinance chart on them would be helpful. Something like Random Chaos (talk) 15:38, 31 October 2016 (UTC)

There is a 5% chance that the fallowing trainers will give the player an evolutionary stone after a rematch.

Current status of move discussion

Does anyone know what the current status is of the move discussion for this article? It hasn't been updated in almost two years. I'm interested to know. Thank you. GrammarFreak01 (talk) 20:32, 18 March 2019 (UTC)

New Generation VIII evolution items; potential page name change to "Evolution Item"

Sword and Shield recently introduced the Sweet Apple, Tart Apple, Cracked Pot, and Chipped Pot, which function identically to evolution stones for their respective Pokémon, and differ only in not being flavored as elemental stones, aesthetically.

It doesn't entirely make sense that this difference in the aesthetic theming of the items would warrant an entirely new page, or their exclusion from this one. As such, I'd like to put forth a suggestion that they be included in this page, and the page's title adjusted accordingly to account for their inclusion.
