Spiritomb (Japanese: ミカルゲ Mikaruge) is a Ghost/Dark-type Pokémon. It is notable for being one of the few Pokémon introduced in Generation IV that does not evolve. It is also notable in that it is the second Pokémon with no weaknesses, the first being Sableye. Spiritomb is also notably the only Pokémon that can only be caught after actual physical interaction with other players, as opposed to merely trading to evolve a Pokémon.
Spiritomb resembles a swirling, purple vortex with green light circling the face. It has a green mouth with a crooked expression and two green eyes shaped like half-crescents. One of the eyes has a spiral-shaped pupil. Spiritomb is attached to a light-brown stone, known as the Odd Keystone, in which it was trapped after doing bad deeds. It is apparently composed of 108 separate, yet bound-together, malevolent spirits.
Spiritomb is the second Pokémon created which is weak to no type. The first was Sableye.
Because it doesn't have a weakness, hackers love to hack Spiritomb with Wonder Guard. A Spiritomb hacked in this manner is known as a "Wondertomb". Despite Wonder Guard protecting against all but super effective moves from hitting (effectively meaning none could), a Wondertomb can still be affected by Will-O-Wisp and other ailment-causing attacks. Another way of countering hacks such as this is by using the move Gastro Acid which eliminates the effect of the foe's ability, thus making the Pokémon vulnerable to non-super effective attacks. Mold Breaker will also cancel Wonder Guard. Pokémon with Scrappy or with Foresight or Odor Sleuth can strike it with Fighting-type attacks.
Spiritomb has been shown to have the ability to fly, but cannot learn the move, nor any HM for that matter.
In Diamond, Spiritomb's entry states that it was formed from 108 spirits. Incidentally, this is also Spiritomb's number in the Sinnoh Dex, as well as the values of its Defense and Special Defense.
Origin
Spiritomb is based on a Jibakurei, a spirit bound to a single place. It also based on a Buddhist tradition performed on New Year's Eve in Japan. A bell is rung 108 times to chase away the 108 temptations in order to achieve nirvana. Note also that Spiritomb is #108 in the Sinnoh Dex and also weighs 108.0kg, and that both its Defense and Special Defense base stats are 108.
Name origin
Its name may come from mika (甕), meaning jar or urn, referring to its being a container of souls; and karuishi (軽石), pumice, referring to its base, the Odd Keystone. Spiritomb is a combination of "spirit" and "tomb". Its German name, Kryppuk, comes from Krypta and Spuk.
