I would have let you battle me if you'd gotten here a little sooner. Oh well. When you're as famous as we are, Trainers'll challenge you every time you walk down the street! Pidgeot needs some rest now. So you do have a heart!: Of course I do! What kind of Trainer would I be if I didn't take care of my Pokémon?! Good thinking!: Thanks! You've gotta get plenty of rest if you want to be on your A game. That goes for Pokémon AND for Trainers! Hm? What is it? Ohhh... I know that look in your eye. You want me to give you some tips on battling, don't you. All right! First, let me introduce you to some other Trainers that are here on Pasio!

Blue	Hey! Flannery! Torkoal!
Flannery	Oh, hey, Blue! You're here, too, <player>? What's going on here?
Blue	Wait, you two know each other?
Flannery	Of course! We're on a team, after all!
Blue	Whoa, look at you! Sounds like you've already got a pretty good team going, don't you, <player>! It's no easy feat to get a strong Trainer to acknowledge you as a teammate, so good going! Of course, she's not as good as me, but...
Flannery	You just had to keep talking, didn't you. Well, you implied that I'm a strong Trainer, so I'll take the compliment.
Blue	I wanted to introduce you two, but if you already know each other...I guess we can move on!

Misty	Yup! <player>'s been working super hard to grow strong for the team! Brock and I made sure to teach him/her the basics. He's/She's got a real knack for Pokémon battling.
Blue	Hm, I see... Of course, if I were on the team, too, he/she would be even stronger.
Misty	Hey! Are you trying to say I'm a bad teacher?
Blue	I'm just saying...he/she could learn a lot more from a stronger sync pair.
Misty	Ugh! I guess some things never change. You think you're better than me. Just admit it!
Flannery	Hey, guys, I don't feel right saying this, but let's cool down a bit! Why not just settle this with a Pokémon battle?
Blue	I'm game for that! But just a normal battle would be boring... There are a bunch of event matches going on all over Pasio right now for the PML. I heard one of them is a team-on-team elimination battle... You interested?
Misty	That kind of feels like a roundabout way of solving things, but all right! Challenge accepted. I guess it'll be more fun to settle this with a bang. Let's do it!
Blue	All right! Then <player> and Flannery are with me!
Misty	Wait, why do you get <player> on your team?!
Blue	Because he/she can learn more that way.
Misty	You really are a piece of work, aren't you... Fine, then I'll make my own Water-type team that'll knock your socks off!
Flannery	This is getting pretty intense! I like it!

Flannery	No kidding! We even made it to the finals!
Blue	Huh, it looks like I just got a Poryphone message from Misty... Wait—what?!

Blue	She lost?! There's somebody in this tournament that could beat Misty? I thought that she and her Starmie would easily make it to the finals. So you admit that she's good./You had faith in her, didn't you.: She's the Cerulean City Gym Leader. It's only common sense she would make it to the finals.

Misty	Aww, man... I'm so bummed I lost that battle. I guess I won't be battling you in the finals after all.
Flannery	Misty! What happened?!
Blue	You got sloppy, didn't you.
Misty	I'm just gonna pretend I didn't hear that... We had fun, and that's what matters. By the way, the guy that beat me had a message for you! He said he wants a rematch with you, Blue.
Blue	A rematch?! You mean I've battled this guy before?
Misty	Oh, you'll know him when you see him... Watch out, though. He's strong! I guess I'll see you at the arena in a bit! I'm not missing this!
(Transition to Bruno and his team)
Bruno	I've been waiting for you, Blue!
Blue	Ahhh, Bruno. So you're the one who beat Misty, huh? Guess that's to be expected from a member of the Indigo League Elite Four.
Bruno	It is all a result of my perseverance training from before and during my time on Pasio.
Blue	...
Flannery	Indigo Elite Four?! Oh man, I have to put my game face on!
Blue	Good call, Flannery. Bruno is the real deal. Flannery, <player>, time to get serious!
Bruno	Get ready for our superior power! Hoo hah!

• Those Who Seek the Ultimate Strength

Bruno's Apprentice	We...lost?! To these children?! We went through arduous training with Master Bruno... We even beat a Gym Leader!
Bruno	This is nothing strange. They were just stronger than us. And as long as you underestimate them as children, that means you still harbor hubris in your heart. Team battles aren't about the power of each individual pair but of how well those pairs work together. Blue, Flannery, and <player> unleashed their true potential as a team.
Blue	You're right, Bruno. It's true. You guys are all strong sync pairs... but my team went a step further, making sure we covered each other's weaknesses. Flannery, <player>... I think that battle was the best this team has done yet! Good job, guys!
Bruno	It's our loss. Blue, you are a really impressive Trainer. No matter the situation or predicament, you strive to be the best there is, and you have the tenacity and serenity to actualize that desire. I have trained to the absolute limit. But perhaps you have the power to surpass that limit.
Blue	I know a guy that I don't want to lose to. And I know that he continues to get even stronger. That's why I can't afford to stop. That's why I want strong Trainers to battle. So if you ever want another rematch, just let me know!
Bruno	I shall train more and challenge you again.
Flannery	So that's what makes you such a strong Trainer, huh, Blue? I gotta work harder, too! Hey, Bruno! Can I train with you?
Bruno	Of course! We can start immediately!
Blue	Well, I guess that means our little impromptu team is disbanding. It's been fun, <player>. I had fun, too!: Heh! Glad to hear that. You know you're on the right track if you're able to have fun. I learned a lot!: Make sure you remember how strong Pidgeot and I are, all right? Here's hoping we can see each other again at some other tournament event. I have no intention of losing, so if you keep moving up the ranks, I'm sure we'll end up battling each other one way or another. I look forward to seeing how strong you become!

A sweets festival had taken over the city for the day. A long line of eager customers queued up in front of one of the festival's best sellers, the famous Casteliacone from Castelia City.
Hilda	Just a little farther, <player>! We're almost to the front! It's been ages since I've had a Casteliacone. I'm so excited!
Roxanne	Are they really that good?
Hilda	They really, really are! Watch, one bite and you'll be addicted! Plus, they're made to look like Vanillite, so they're really cute, too!
Roxanne	Oh, I already know what they look like! I did some research before coming here today. I want to know how they taste. What about the texture? Are they more creamy or airy? What do you like most about Casteliacones?
Hilda	Wow, I didn't realize you were that interested! Why the sudden curiosity about Casteliacones?
Roxanne	I want to figure out why certain things become popular. What is it about them that makes so many people go crazy? It's important to be eager to learn, no matter what the topic is. The same goes for applying that knowledge to your Pokémon battles.
Hilda	You really love learning, huh! As for Casteliacones, I think tasting one for yourself will be a lot more helpful than asking me to describe them. Plus, it'll be more fun that way! Am I right?
Roxanne	I...suppose that's true. All right, then! I'll look forward to tasting one myself!
(Team Break appears)
Masked Woman	Hehe! Look, a gap in the line just for me! Guess today's my lucky day!
Roxanne	Excuse me! What do you think you're doing? Cutting in line is against the rules.
Masked Woman	Who cares! What's the big deal, anyways? You can't expect me to wait in line for hours just for some dumb ice cream.
Hilda	D-dumb ice cream? Dumb ice cream?! Casteliacones are famous! They always sell out immediately, even in Castelia City, where they're originally from! Waiting in line for hours to get your hands on one is part of what makes it so delicious! You really don't get it at all, do you?!
Masked Woman	Sheesh! Somebody woke up on the wrong side of bed this morning...
Roxanne	Regardless, I won't tolerate rule-breaking! Now march yourself right to the back of the line.

Roxanne	The two of you are quite strong, aren't you... I'm impressed! Although...your battle style is a bit on the reckless side.
Hilda	What?! I wouldn't call it reckless. How will you know if something's gonna work or not if you don't jump in there and give it a try? Traveling around the Unova region taught me to take the initiative. If you stop and think for too long, sometimes you end up missing your chance. What I'm trying to say is that it's good to take action! You can always reflect on things later. That's how I intend to raise my Tepig—from now until she evolves into a fiery Emboar!
Roxanne	Interesting... I guess I've never really thought of it that way.
Hilda	What's your stance, <player>? I prefer to take action!: I thought you'd say that! I've always felt like we were pretty similar in that regard!
Roxanne	I prefer to think first, act later!: I knew you'd say that! Great minds think alike, <player>.

Pokémon Ranger	If you're not busy at the moment, do you want to have a Pokémon battle? I was watching you battle earlier, and now I'm itching to fight!
Roxanne	Oh, really? Well, maybe another battle will help Hilda see sense when it comes to the importance of good planning.
Hilda	Or it'll help Roxanne realize that taking action is more important than planning everything out! You're on!

• Thorton's Proposal

Roxanne	My thorough planning and calm, cool analysis seem to have done the trick.

Thorton	Oh, don't mind me. I just thought I'd take this opportunity to perform an analysis on your Pokémon. Your battle earlier has me quite intrigued.
Hilda	Huh?! Analysis? You didn't even ask us first!
Roxanne	Hey, look! He's got four Casteliacones!
Hilda	WHAT?!
Thorton	Oh, these? I bought them for an experiment. I plan to feed them to Pokémon and observe their responses. Why, do you want them? I guess I could let them go if you agree to battle me instead.
Hilda	Are you serious?!
Thorton	Collecting data from your Pokémon is worth more to me than a few ice cream cones. This will be fun. I look forward to analyzing all of the data later.

• Synergy beyond Analysis?!

Thorton	Whoa! Whoa! You're even more impressive than I thought!
Roxanne	We did it! That was some excellent teamwork!
Hilda	It's like we were totally in sync! We make such an awesome team! The question is how, though, right? Our battle styles are still polar opposites.
Thorton	Hmm, this can't be right... My data-interpreting machine was just reading at 78% a moment ago. Oh, don't mind me! Just mumbling to myself... You can just ignore that number. It seems my data analysis was insufficient to keep up with the movements and commands of you three and your Pokémon. A sub-optimal performance indeed... I stand defeated.
Hilda	Wait, are you saying we were so in sync that we broke your machine? How awesome is that!
Roxanne	Our styles may be totally different, but when we were battling together, it felt like something just clicked.
Thorton	I'd have to collect a lot more data to be sure. I think there's something else at work here...something that can't be expressed in numbers. Ah, that reminds me. Four Casteliacones in exchange for a battle, as promised.
Hilda	Woo-hoo! Finally!
Roxanne	Thank you, Thorton! Wait... Oh no!
Hilda	NOOO! They're totally melted!
Thorton	Oh. Well, that's unfortunate. Though that is to be expected with ice cream.
Roxanne	I can't believe this... After all that buildup, I don't even get to taste one? Wait—pause! Melted or not, the ingredients are all still there. Melting shouldn't change the flavor, right?!
Hilda	I...guess so? Maybe? Why don't we just come back again tomorrow and wait in line for a good, not-melted one? We'll have plenty of time to chat while we wait. Maybe we can get to know each other a little better!
Roxanne	That's not a bad idea. Like you said before, waiting in line is part of what makes Casteliacones delicious, right? I'm sure they'll taste even more amazing after spending all that time with you and <player>!

Centra City was abuzz with Trainers and Pokémon. As usual, <player> didn't have to wait long to be challenged to a battle. This time, his/her opponents looked particularly strong.
Ace Trainer	C'mon, team! These guys are nothing to panic over. This battle's gonna be ours! We won't lose to you!/Attack with everything we've got, team!
In the end, <player> won... But he/she was surprised to find Caitlin watching the battle from nearby.
Caitlin	Well, fancy running into you here, <player>. Lovely battle. I saw you fighting out of the corner of my eye as I was walking into town, and then I found I couldn't take my eyes off of you. I do have to point out one thing, though... You could stand to win your battles with a touch more elegance, if I had any say in the matter. Elegance?/What did I do wrong?: A Trainer must always remain calm and collected. We must present an image of dignity, refinement, and grace. That, my dear, is elegance... Once you find peace and gain a bit of emotional leeway, you begin to see things you couldn't before. If you wish to fully utilize your skills in battle, elegance is of the utmost importance.
???	Hey, you two aren't talking about fashion without ME, are you?!

Candice	I heard something about grace and elegance... Well? What's the gossip? I want to know all the juicy details!
Caitlin	I think you may have misheard us. I wasn't talking about fashion... I was just teaching my dear friend here that elegance is of the utmost importance when it comes to Pokémon battling.
Candice	Gee, do you really think so? I guess I've never thought about elegance like that before... Now I'm curious!
Caitlin	Very well. Perhaps I can show you both how grace and elegance can elevate one's prowess in battle...

Caitlin	Well done, both of you. That battle was quite splendid.
Candice	I just focused as hard as I could, as always! It's what I'm best at!
Caitlin	I don't think I would choose the word "elegant" to describe you in that battle... but you certainly had an air of strength and toughness about you. I could feel your energy across the battlefield.
Candice	Oh wow! Yeah! You were probably feeling that Candice focus that I'm known for! Pokémon, fashion, romance... It's all about focus! My Abomasnow's focus is always top-notch, too!
Caitlin	Tee-hee! It's a style that suits you and your partner very well, I think. I used to be unable to control my own emotions or the psychic powers I possess. Whenever I lost a battle, they would spin entirely out of control... So much so that I was once forbidden from battling at all. All of that changed when I began interacting with Psychic-type Pokémon. They are able to manipulate their power at will, you see. With their help, I learned to keep my negative emotions at bay. I learned how to remain calm, elegant, and at peace in any battle. I take great pride in my elegance, but I must admit that your focus has piqued my interest quite a bit, Candice.
Candice	Well gee, I'd still love to learn more about elegance, too! Sounds like we should do a lot more battling together!

• The Beat! The Passion!

Caitlin	Well, you see...

Roxie	Ahh, I think I get it now... You want my honest opinion? After watchin' you guys battle... I don't think elegance OR focus are what's really most important when it comes to Pokémon battling.
Candice	Well, what IS then? With enough focus, you can pretty much do whatever you set your mind to! It's the best!
Caitlin	I'm interested to hear what you have to say. Do go on.
Roxie	Well, in MY opinion, it's gotta be the beat! The passion! You start riffin', you build up a killer rhythm, and then BAM! You smash your opponents in the face with it!

• Strength and Kindness

Roxie	Gahh! What's goin' on, Roxie?! You weren't supposed to lose! *sigh* Guess I blew my chance at showin' you guys what I was talkin' about.
Caitlin	I wouldn't say that. It's true that we won the battle this time... but you certainly made an impression! Your attacks were like a raging rapid, threatening to knock me down at any moment.
Candice	Caitlin's right! You were seriously impressive! I felt like we were an inch from losing through the whole thing!
Roxie	Really? But what about the beat? Did you feel the BEAT?!
Caitlin	As a matter of fact, I believe I did feel it. And after this last battle with you, I think I finally understand... When it comes to Pokémon battling, each and every Trainer has their own belief about what is most important—it's individual to them. And I think that's lovely. It's our differences that make us so interesting.
Roxie	I guess you've got a point. When I'm playin' music, sometimes it's less about the beat and more about just chillin' and enjoyin' myself.
Candice	Yeah! I know not everybody is as superfocused as I am... but more often than not, it's easy to tell when somebody really cares about their Pokémon and how much battling means to them.
Caitlin	In other words, a Trainer should never push others to follow their own personal methods...even if they believe they are correct. <player>... It didn't really come up in our conversation before, but after what I witnessed today... I would say that you seem to value kindness more than anything else when it comes to Pokémon battling. You shine with both kindness and strength in every battle you compete in... I saw that very clearly today. I should thank you, <player>. For helping me learn a valuable lesson today. Black Belt	Many hopeful applicants, myself included, have traveled here today for the chance to learn the techniques of a legendary chef. However, I heard that Siebold only wishes to take on a single apprentice... Therefore, I must kick my rivals out of the running here and now.
Rosa	No way... I'm not gonna give up and go home before I've even had the chance to meet Chef Siebold in person!
Black Belt	Errgh! Then you leave me no choice... The path to becoming a master chef is a brutal one. Leave now, or I will strike hard and without mercy!
Maylene	Come on, Rosa, <player>! Let's take him on! We can't let bullies like him go unchecked! Besides, I'm a martial artist myself! It would be dishonorable to run away from a challenge!

• A Chef's Philosophy

Maylene	Huh? A Pokémon battle?! What does Pokémon battling have to do with cooking?
Siebold	Everything! The two may seem different on the surface, but deep down both are forms of art that share the same philosophy. The end results only last for a few brief, passing moments, so we devote ourselves to making those moments last in our memories forever.
Rosa	So your theory is...if you watch me battle, you'll understand my philosophy on cooking, too?
Siebold	Precisely. Now, the final question is...will you indulge my curiosity?
Rosa	To be honest, I'm still pretty confused about all of this, but I'll give it a shot! I guess my philosophy is...to always put my heart and soul into every battle. I'll do my best!

Rising Star	Nuh-uh! It's Cynthia who's number one! She's not limited to Dragon types like Lance. She can triumph with Pokémon of ANY type! Her Garchomp is a Dragon type, sure, but it's also an ultrapowerful Ground-type Pokémon!
Scientist	That's preposterous! Come, child—just accept the fact that Lance is the greatest!
Cynthia	No way! Cynthia is the best! Nothing you say is gonna convince me otherwise, OK?!

Rising Star	*gasp* Oh my gosh! It's C-Cynthia! E-excuse me! Cynthia! Hi! Oh my gosh, I'm your biggest fan! I'll believe in you no matter what! I'm totally, absolutely, positively sure that you're stronger than Lance!
Scientist	Lies! Utter nonsense! It is Lance who is the strongest, mightiest dragon master! I can prove it to you right now! I may look like just another scientist, but I have faced the great Lance in battle before!

Cynthia	It certainly seems that way. As long as this whole debate leads to a fun battle between us, that's good enough for me.
Rosa	Doesn't all of this make you curious, though? About who's really the greatest?
Cynthia	Well...I'd be lying if I said I wasn't curious. I've just never placed much importance on earning titles like "the greatest."
Rosa	Seriously?! But people call you the greatest all the time, Cynthia!
Cynthia	I know. I do hear that a lot. But as far as I'm concerned, the goal in all this isn't to compare myself to others. Working hard with Garchomp to grow stronger each day, to excel beyond our limits... That personal growth is more important to me. And that's why, to be honest, I don't really care how the rest of the world perceives me.
Rosa	Mhmm... Wow, it must be nice not to care what people think. I wish I could be that cool!
Cynthia	*chuckle* Did that come off a bit too high and mighty? Let's just forget I said anything, all right? Well, I should get going. Places to go, people to see...

Clair	It's simple. I know who the strongest dragon master is... because it's me—Clair!

Rosa	Ohhh, of course! You're a dragon master, too! I hadn't even thought about that.
Lance	It's true that you're strong, Clair. And it's good to have confidence in your own abilities... but there's a limit to what's good and what's not. Too much pride can make you overconfident, and overconfidence can make you vulnerable.

Lance	To get back to your question, Rosa, I think I share Cynthia's feelings about the title of who's "the greatest." I know the vanity that title holds.

Lance	A long time ago, when I was a member of the Elite Four but not Champion, I was defeated by a Trainer. He claimed to be the greatest of all, and he had the strength and skill to back it up. But eventually, a stronger Trainer came along, and even he was defeated... It was then that I realized something. That title—"the greatest"—can inflate your ego, but it doesn't really mean anything. It's an illusion, there one minute and gone the next... The way I see it, seeking to grow and improve yourself is far more worthwhile than chasing a fleeting illusion of greatness.
Rosa	Mhmm... Wow, that's so deep. You Champions really are on a whole different level. I should be taking notes!
Lance	*chuckle* Glad I could bring a bit of perspective. Well, if you'll excuse me, I've been meaning to take a stroll around the city sometime today.

I wanted to prove that I'm the greatest dragon master...that I'm worthy of being your Trainer. I guess, as it turns out, I'm nowhere near that level... I need to get stronger... You were brilliant, though, Kingdra. You fought hard, and your moves were all fantastic.

Cynthia	You staked your pride on this battle to prove yourself to the Pokémon you love, and despite being defeated, you refuse to give up. You still strive to grow and improve yourself, and that is admirable. As a fellow Trainer, I really respect that!

Cynthia	We've faced some tough opponents today... Garchomp and Dragonite have really had to push themselves in these last few battles. Our Pokémon are our partners, and we care a lot about them, which means it's our duty to make sure their needs are taken care of.
Lance	Right. That's just basic Pokémon training protocol. You have to make sure your Pokémon are all right before jumping into a battle situation with them... even if it means having others tease you or accuse you of running away from a challenge.
Rosa	O-of course. You're right. I'm sorry... I guess I just got a little carried away.
