History

Past

Will, along with Karen, Green, Silver, Sham, and Carl, was one of the children raised by the Masked Man to be his servants. Unlike Silver and Green, Will was not kidnapped and went to the Masked Man willingly out of boredom.

Gold, Silver & Crystal arc

Will debuted with Karen at the Ilex Forest, where they have been tasked with guarding the area. When Green arrived to stop the Masked Man's plan to capture Celebi, she was attacked by Will and Karen. With the Lugia and Ho-Oh they borrowed from the Masked Man, Will and Karen exploited Green's fear of birds to torture her. When Green learned that Will and Karen also defeated and captured Silver, she overcame her fear of birds and sent out Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres to fight. Green and her allies, Red and Blue, each used one of the legendary birds to battle Will and Karen. With the assistance of many Pokémon sent from all across Johto and Kanto, Lugia and Ho-Oh were freed from the Masked Man's control and flew away. Defeated, Will made his escape, only to be punished later by the Masked Man for doing so.

After the Masked Man's defeat, Will and Karen were approached by Bruno and Koga, who offered to form an alliance since all four of them were once members of various criminal organizations.

HeartGold & SoulSilver arc

It is revealed that Will, Karen, Bruno, and Koga were all made members of the Johto Elite Four by the Pokémon Association. The Johto Elite Four went to the Pokéathlon as an act of promotion for the Pokémon League. There, they met Gold, whom they challenged to the Power Course. Although they easily defeated Gold in the first two events, Gold gained enough points in the third event to win overall.

Will's Natu
Will's Xatu

Xatu is Will's first known Pokémon. It was first used to attack Green at the Ilex Forest. Green's fear of birds prevented her from fighting back. Later, it was used against Silver while on Lugia's back. After being weakened by a Beat Up from Silver's entire team, Xatu was defeated by a Return from Silver's Feraligatr. In The Escape, it was revealed to have evolved from a Natu.

Xatu's only known move is Psychic.

Exeggutor
Will's Exeggutor

Exeggutor first appeared alongside its Trainer at the Pokéathlon. It was used to challenge Gold in the Goal Roll event, where it easily won.

None of Exeggutor's moves are known.

Lugia
Masked Man's Lugia
Main article: Tower duo (Adventures)

The Masked Man lent Lugia to Will in order to guard the Ilex Forest. Will used Lugia to battle Green, Red, and Blue, who used Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres, respectively. During the battle, many Pokémon sent from people from Kanto and Johto came to assist. The Pokémon latched on to Lugia and Ho-Oh, and their combined power freed the two from the Masked Man's control. Now freed, Lugia and Ho-Oh flew off to parts unknown.

Pokémon Pocket Monsters

Will in Pokémon Pocket Monsters

Will appeared in A Challenge to the Elite Four. He, along with Bruno and Koga, fell from the Elite Four Tower, seemingly defeated by Karen. Red asked them what happened, but Koga asked him to ask Karen herself. It is later revealed that after being exhausted from training, Karen decided to tell them a joke, and they fell down the building after hearing her dumb joke.

Exeggutor
Will's Exeggutor

Exeggutor is Will's only known Pokémon. It appeared on the top floor of the Pokémon League when Red found Karen up there. It was "sieved" by Clefairy since Red was outnumbered.

None of Exeggutor's moves are known.

Trivia

  • Will's hair falls over the left side of his face, leading to his left eye being whited out in some depictions. This has spurred debate as to whether he has one eye or two. This is rectified in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, where his overworld sprite clearly shows two eyes, both obscured by white.
  • Will has several similarities with Lorelei: both of them are the first challenger of Kanto Elite Four; both of them have used Slowbro and Jynx in their respective parties; they have similar hairstyles; and both of them have had their hair depicted as either purple or red.
  • There is data in Pokémon Crystal for the gender of every Trainer class in the game, with the exception of Eusine. This is used to select which dialogue pool to sample from when randomly choosing the opponent's dialogue. Interestingly, Will is one of two male characters to be identified as female in this array. The other is Bugsy.
    • All of Will's Pokémon (excluding Jynx, which is a female-only species) changed from male in Gold, Silver, and Crystal to female in HeartGold and SoulSilver.
      • Similarly to Saturn, Bugsy, and Janine, his Pokémon are the opposite gender despite them having a 50-50 gender ratio.
  • Will is the only member of the Indigo Plateau Elite Four (in Generation II and HeartGold and SoulSilver) that uses only Pokémon of the type that he specializes in the first match. All others have at least one Pokémon not of their specialty in their first match, and, with the exception of Lance, replace the Pokémon not of their specialty with Pokémon of their specialty in rematches.
  • Will is the only Elite Four member of the new Indigo Plateau where his team (initial one only in Pokémon HeartGold and Pokémon SoulSilver) are all dual-typed and none of his Pokémon are pure Psychic-type.
