Elite Four
The Elite Four (Japanese: 四天王 Shitennō, lit. Four Heavenly Kings or Big Four) are four Pokémon Trainers who are regarded as the toughest in their regional Pokémon League, short of League Champion. Those who challenge the Elite Four must have achieved all eight Badges from that region and face all four and the current Champion consecutively without losing to any of them. One group resides on Indigo Plateau in Kanto, and are considered the best trainers in both Kanto and Johto; another is in Ever Grande City in Hoenn; and the last known one is in the unnamed Pokémon League in Sinnoh.

In the anime
Ash and his friends often meet the members of the Elite Four, who then impart them with battle strategies. So far, Ash has only met the complete Kanto group, meeting Lorelei in EP099, Bruno in EP071, Agatha in AG132, and Lance in EP235. Ash has also met Koga in EP032, though merely for the Fuchsia Gym Badge, Drake in AG101, Wallace in DP075, Lucian in DP035, and Cynthia in DP040.
It has been hinted at by Lucian in An Elite Meet and Greet! that when a trainer wins their respective region's Conference Tournament that they can participate in the Elite Four Challenge, fighting the four members of that region's Elite Four, and then possibly the Champion as well.
Trivia
- In the Generation I games, the type specialties of the Elite Four were in ascending order by type-advantage: Lorelei's Ice types are weak to Bruno's Fighting types, Agatha's Ghost types are resistant to Bruno's Fighting types, and Lance's Dragon types have superior strength over Agatha. In Generation II, the order was reversed: Will's Psychic types are strong against Koga's Poison types, which are strong against Bruno's Fighting types, which are strong against Karen's Dark types. This pattern repeated in Generation III, with Dark, Ghost, Ice and Dragon. However, Generation IV's Elite Four possess no obvious weakness or strength over the member before or after them.
- Ash has met all members of the original Kanto Elite Four as well as the anime counterpart to its champion, Blue, his own rival Gary Oak. Of the Generation II group, Ash has met Koga, who was merely a Gym Leader the last time he was seen, Bruno, who is also a member of the Generation I group, and Lance. Of the Hoenn and Sinnoh Elite Four, Ash has only so far met the fourth member and the Champion, meeting Drake, Steven, and Wallace, and later Lucian and Cynthia.
- As of Generation IV, Champion Lance has the weakest level and Champion Cynthia has the strongest level. It does not count Champion Blue in Generation III on the second battle.
