Traveling Trainer Tokio (Japanese:旅するトレーナー・トキオ ) is the third chapter of the Pokémon Horizon manga.

Synopsis

Rockruff dodges a punch from a Pancham and Akira commands it to use Tackle, which wins them the battle. This is their latest victory as they, along with Mana, begin the island challenge. Mana states that Akira and Rockruff should not get too confident, saying they are still at a low level, though she also thinks that they are getting stronger.

Distracted by talking to Rockruff, Akira walks into a huge wild Pangoro. Mana readies her Poké Ball to engage it in battle, but a stranger steps in to help them. He sends in his Jangmo-o, which uses Headbutt on the Pangoro. The wild Pokémon falls to the ground, having been defeated with one hit.

Akira and Mana cannot believe how quickly the stranger and his Pokémon defeated the Pangoro, and ask his name. The boy, with his Type: Null by his side, says his Tokio, a traveling Trainer.

Akira and Mana thank Tokio for his help, and observe that despite having a powerful Type: Null, he was able to defeat the Pangoro with a Jangmo-o. Tokio responds by saying that he knew that using Jangmo-o's Headbutt on Pangoro's chin would be super effective.

Akira says that Tokio knows a lot about Pokémon, and Mana contrasts this with Akira's lack of knowledge.

Tokio says that he's heard a lot about Akira, that he's been on a winning streak ever since he and Rockruff defeated the wild Drampa. He then challenges Akira to a battle, and though Mana warns him that this will be tougher than all the previous battles, Akira readily accepts and sends in Rockruff. Tokio uses Jangmo-o, and the two Pokémon clash in an opening skirmish. Rockruff begins to land some blows, then lunges at Jangmo-o. Tokio then tells Jangmo-o to attack and it charges powerfully through Rockruff.

Akira and Mana wonder how Jangmo-o got so powerful quickly, and Mana realises that Tokio has ordered his Pokémon to use Bide. This meant that Jangmo-o inflicted double the damage to Rockruff that Rockruff had just dealt to it.

The hurt Rockruff is hit once again by Jangmo-o, and Akira is concerned as Tokio tells Jangmo-o to keep up the attacks so that his Pokémon can't recover. Another strike knocks Rockruff to the ground, and Tokio remarks that the pair are not as powerful as he thought. Akira tells him not to underestimate Rockruff, as his Pokémon quickly regains its feet. He draws Tokio's attention to a rock floating above Rockruff, and tells his Pokémon to use its new move, Rock Throw.

The attack hits Jangmo-o, and the Pokémon cowers. Akira and Mana say that it has lost its will to fight, but Tokio glares at his Pokémon and shouts at it to use its full power. Jangmo-o trembles with fear, and Akira says that they should stop because the Pokémon is scared.

Tokio claims it is ironic that Akira should tell him to stop, since it was he who had ordered the injured Rockruff to continue fighting to draw out its full power in the past. Akira says it is different because Rockruff wanted to fight on.

Tokio says that Pokémon are born to fight, and that Trainers should not care about what a Pokémon wants. Akira is shocked by this, and Tokio kneels by his Pokémon and encourages it, telling it to use all the strength it has got. The Pokémon responds, persuaded by Tokio's actions, and looks ready for battle once again. Akira questions what has just happened, and Mana suggests that Tokio could be a charisma Trainer–a Trainer that is able to force Pokémon to obey any command.

The smirking Tokio commands Jangmo-o to use Outrage, and his Pokémon lunges wildly at Rockruff, as though being mind-controlled by its Trainer. Rockruff cannot dodge the attack and suffers a lot of damage. It staggers backwards and faces the berserk Jangmo-o.

Akira knows his Pokémon wants to continue, and tells Rockruff that the only way is to draw out its full power. Rockruff howls, and the stone around its neck begins to glow.

Tokio has been waiting for this, and is now in no doubt that this is the Rockruff with the red stone he has been searching for. He also admires the battling intensity that Akira forms with his Pokémon.

Akira commands Rockruff to use a full power Tackle, and his Pokémon charges through Jangmo-o, sending Tokio's Pokémon flying into the air and defeating it.

The group celebrate the victory, but Rockruff notices that Tokio has turned his back on the injured Jangmo-o. Akira shouts to Tokio, but the Trainer is dismissive of the Pokémon, saying he only captured it to battle Rockruff.

Akira is furious that Tokio would manipulate Jangmo-o's emotions, forcing it to battle to the full, only to abandon it afterwards. Tokio commands Type: Null to clear the fallen Jangmo-o out of their way, and it cruelly kicks the Pokémon from the battlefield.

The group are outraged, and demand that Tokio apologises to Jangmo-o. The angry Rockruff lunges at Type: Null. Tokio says that it is not ready to battle Type: Null, but allows his Pokémon to battle Rockruff, who is already tired from its previous battle. He commands his Pokémon to use X-Scissor, which defeats Rockruff. Tokio insists that it was too early for it to battle Type: Null because the gulf between them is vast.

Angry at Tokio, Akira comforts the fallen Rockruff, and Mana says they need to take it to a Pokémon Center. Tokio walks away and says he will see them again soon.

Out of earshot, Tokio tells Type: Null that it was careless to allow Rockruff to bite it in their brief battle, which has caused a slight injury to its leg. He remarks he is annoyed by the team of Akira and Rockruff.

Akira and Mana are relieved when Rockruff regains consciousness and barks enthusiastically. Akira grins and tells it that they will beat Tokio and Type: Null the next time that they meet.
