Mewtwo (Japanese: ミュウツー Mewtwo) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon. It is one of the most famous legendary Pokémon, being the subject of two Pokémon movies, and starring as a fighter in Super Smash Bros. Melee. It can be captured in Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, FireRed, and LeafGreen versions after defeating the Elite Four, and upgrading the Sevii Islands Network Machine in FireRed and LeafGreen. It is found in Cerulean Cave at level 70.

Biology

Mewtwo is one of the first Pokémon created by science. The scientists who created it dreamed of making the strongest Pokémon ever.

Physiology

Mewtwo is a creature with a humanoid posture. Mewtwo's body is grayish-purple with a purple underside and a long, purple tail. Mewtwo has three digits on each appendage. It has purple eyes and two short ears.

One of the most notable features of Mewtwo is the tube extending from the back of its skull to its spine. It is not exactly a neck, as it obviously provides no support to the head, however, it still is most likely a secondary spinal cord, or a system of nerves, allowing for an increased amount of blood and sensory transmission to the brain, heightening its psychic powers.

Gender differences

This Pokémon is genderless and it is the only one of its kind, but it looks somewhat more masculine. In the movies, it also has a male telepathic voice.

Special abilities

Mewtwo is highly skilled with Psychic powers. It can fly through the air (and take anyone else that it pleases with it), speak human tongue by using telepathy and take over another living thing's mind. Mewtwo is also capable of wielding various types of attack (but at a slightly lesser extent than Mew). In the Pokémon Special manga, Mewtwo fights with a highly skilled combination of Psywave for long range moves, and a giant spoon for close range battles.

Behavior

Mewtwo is very aggressive and thinks of nothing but battling and defeating its foes. The reason for this might be somehow connected to the repeated recombining of its DNA or the loss of his/its best friend Amber.

Habitat

Mewtwo, being a cloned Pokémon, has no natural habitat. However, during Generation I/Generation III it makes its hideout in Cerulean Cave's basement.

Diet

In the Games

Acording to the scientific logs found in the Pokémon Mansion of Cinnabar Island, Mewtwo was born of a pregnant Mew whose embryo had been tampered with and its DNA had been repetitivey spliced. It was held and studied in the mansion where the scientists (including Blaine and Dr. Fuji (now known as Mr. Fuji) performed horrific gene-splicing experiments that made it vicious and extremely powerful. It eventually broke free of the Mansion (destroying it in the process) and fled to the Unknown Dungeon. There, the player may capture it after beating the Elite Four.

In the anime

While Mewtwo has been the Pokémon of focus of two movies, it also made brief appearances in The Battle of the Badge and It's Mr. Mime Time in its body armor. The first instance was when Giovanni used it to battle Gary's Arcanine and Nidoking. The second time was when Mewtwo totaled Giovanni's headquarters and flew off.

A Mirage Mewtwo appears in The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon and is the most powerful Pokémon controlled by the Mirage Master.

In the manga

In Pokémon Special Mewtwo has a similar origin and personality to the Mewtwo that appeared in the anime. It is a genetically engineered created by Blaine for Team Rocket by splicing Mew's DNA with his own. Blaine later defected from Team Rocket and hid himself away, as both he and Mewtwo were suffering from an illness caused by a shared psychic link due to their mutual DNA. Mewtwo went on a rampage and hid itself in the Cerulean Cave, but Red was able to capture him with a Master Ball and return him to Blaine so he could attempt to find a cure for their illness. Blaine and Mewtwo fought against Lance but were defeated when their condition weakened them. The pair were later cured by the flames of an Entei Blaine befriended and Mewtwo left on his own, returning when he learned of Giovanni's plans to use Deoxys for nefarious purposes. Mewtwo joined up with Red to attempt to defeat Deoxys and Giovanni.

Pokémon Get da ze! portrays Shuu's father as having been the creator of Mewtwo after a failed five year search for the elusive Mew.

During the final volume of Magical Pokémon Journey, Hazel goes to a forest in another dimension to find Mew so it can grant her a wish, and gets trapped by Mewtwo.

Mewtwo is a playable character and is unlocked after a lot of playing in VS. Mode; either after 700 matches or 20 hours of combined play. The time taken is reduced by the number of human players, so Mewtwo can be unlocked after just five hours if four players are playing for the whole time.

Ironically for its legendary status, Mewtwo is considered to be the poorest character when played at the highest metagame. It is easy to knock off the stage due to its large body and light weight. In addition, Mewtwo is slow, does not have any fast defensive options and also has general problems with some of its other moves. This all leads to Mewtwo's position at the bottom of the bottom tier, below even Pichu.

Trophy information

Classic Mode

A genetically created Pokémon, Mewtwo is the result of many long years of research by a solitary scientist. Although Mewtwo was born from the genes of the legendary Pokémon Mew, its size and character are far different than its ancestor. Its battle abilities have been radically heightened, making it ruthless.

Adventure Mode

As Mewtwo relies mostly on its powerful brain, there are times when it scarcely uses its arms and legs. Since Mewtwo spends much of its time floating, it flies far when struck. Shadow Ball traces a jagged path once released: the longer Mewtwo holds it, the more powerful it becomes. Mewtwo uses Confusion to spin its foes around.

All-Star Mode

Mewtwo is definitely not a speedy character, but its ESP-powered grab and throw moves are comparatively strong. Teleport has a short range, but doesn't leave it open to attack. It's best used as an escape move during disturbances. Mewtwo can daze a foe if it makes eye contact and uses Disable; the move is useless unless Mewtwo is facing its enemy.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Mewtwo was cut from the sequel's roster - effectively being replaced by Lucario. However, internal data features data for seven characters not in the roster; Mewtwo included. It is currently unknown if it will be possible to utilize this data in any way but this does show that Mewtwo was seriously considered for the game as there is the picture for ending classic mode of Mewtwo, and Mewtwo's voice was also found on the disc, but there is a chance that the data for Mewtwo is merely recycled from Melee. Mewtwo does appear as a random collectable trophy, however.

Trivia

  • Due to the Template:Type2 being off-balance with the fourteen other types in Generation I, and combined with its high base stats (never surpassed if Special is counted as Special Attack and Special Defense, and otherwise only surpassed when Generation IV introduced Arceus), Mewtwo was long regarded as the most powerful of all Pokémon. Mewtwo was taken down a bit in the second generation games with the introduction of the Template:Type2 which is very strong against Psychic Pokémon, and also with the Template:Type2 which is resistant to Psychic attacks. It also was helped by the fact that Mewtwo could not be obtained in Pokémon Gold, Pokémon Silver, and Pokémon Crystal.
  • Mewtwo has the second highest Special Attack in the game, surpassed only by the attack form of Deoxys. This makes it the Pokémon with the highest Special Attack if event Pokémon are not counted.
  • While it is supposed to be a clone of Mew, it precedes Mew in the National Dex, being number 150, while Mew is number 151. Also, while Mewtwo is needed to complete one's Pokédex, Mew isn't. Also, Mewtwo can't learn every TM.
  • Mewtwo looks strikingly similar to members of the Abra evolution line, especially Kadabra. Mewtwo has about the same bodyshape and digit placement. Of course, these curious similarities are offset by its Mew features.
  • There seems to be a bit of controversy among the programmers with Mewtwo's chest design. Some sprites and images are seen with it having three segments while other sprites and images are seen of its with only two segments.
  • Mewtwo was the first Pokémon seen in the English dub, as it appears at the very beginning of the first dub opening.
  • In the games, Mew was said to have given birth to Mewtwo during Generation I. Pokémon were shown to hatch from eggs, however, in the following generation. The statement about Mew giving birth remains in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen.
  • In Super Smash Bros. Melee, one of Mewtwo's alternate costumes makes it appear similar to its alternate coloration.
  • In the games, its birthday is February 6, as stated in a jorurnal quote from the Pokémon Mansion

Origin

It is very cat-like, and its nature and origin are similar to elements of Mary Shelly's Frankenstein, in which an artificial lifeform turned on its creators. Mewtwo also bears a resemblance to the Dragon Ball Z villain, Frieza. It also has a kangaroo-like body structure.

Name origin

Mewtwo's name is a combination of Mew, referring to the Pokémon on which it was based, and two, indicating that it is a clone of Mew. It also sounds somewhat phonetically similar to the English word mutant (myūtanto).
