Hydro Cannon is a slightly inaccurate but very highly-damaging Template:Type2 move introduced in Generation III. For all intents and purposes, it is a Water-type Hyper Beam.

Effect

Hydro Cannon deals a large amount of damage and then forces the user to recharge during the next turn. Unless this attack misses, the user will always have to recharge.

In the anime

Pokémon

Blastoise: Blastoise shoots a powerful blast of water from the cannons in its shell.

Empoleon: Empoleon gathers energy to form a large water ball and shoots it from its mouth.

In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen

In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, an elderly woman on Cape Brink will teach Blastoise Hydro Cannon. Like Frenzy Plant and Blast Burn, the Pokémon must have a very high happiness rating.

In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl and Pokémon Platinum

An elderly man, much like the woman on Cape Brink, appears on Route 228 in the Battle Zone, and will teach it to the three fully evolved water starters of the previous generations, as well as Empoleon. He will also require that the Pokémon that is to learn the move has a high happiness rating.

  • Mew, though repeatedly said on the Pokédex to be able to learn any move, is not able to learn Hydro Cannon because it can only be taught to Water-type starter Pokémon.
