Lucario (Japanese: ルカリオ Lucario) is a dual-type Fighting/Steel Pokémon.

It evolves from Riolu via Happiness during the day.

Biology

Physiology

Lucario is a bipedal, jackal-like Pokémon that's around four feet in height. Lucario's forepaws are black and have one white spike on each arm on the upper-side of its wrists. In addition, there's a third spike on Lucario's chest. Lucario's snout and ears have also grown longer since its evolution from Riolu. Lucario also has a furry yellow torso, and its thighs are in the shape of what looks like blue shorts.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Lucario are sensitive to a special type of energy called aura. Lucario can study these waves to predict the movements of their opponents, and use them to track anyone. They can also guide the waves offensively to create explosive balls of aura energy (such as Aura Sphere, one of only two non-legendaries to learn that move). Lucario are also able understand human speech; some people say that Lucario can also speak it, though only one has reportedly done so, and through telepathy.

Behavior

Lucario are considered to be prideful creatures, and are extremely loyal to their trainers. Lucario also seem to have a natural sense of justice.

Habitat

Lucario usually live deep in mountains far from people to improve their skills.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

The Lucario in Lucario and the Mystery of Mew was shown eating berries and was introduced to chocolate by Max.

In the anime

In the Pokémon movie Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, Lucario is considered a legend from olden times to the town where it appears in front of Ash Ketchum and his friends, and mistakes Ash for its old friend Sir Aaron due to his similar aura.

Lucario also makes a cameo in the theme songs Battle Frontier and Together.

Lucario's first appearance in an actual episode was in Lost Leader Strategy!, under the ownership of Maylene.

Lucario also makes a brief appearance at the beginning of The Rise of Darkrai, where one is shown dodging Rayquaza's Hyper Beam.

Another Lucario will appear under the ownership of Riley in DP110.

Pokédex entries

  • DP066: "Lucario. The Aura Pokémon, and the evolved form of Riolu. By sensing the Aura of it's opponents, Lucario can read their thoughts and movements."

In the manga

In the Pokémon Special manga, like in games, it appears under the ownership of Riley

Other appearances

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

File:Lucario Brawl.jpg
Lucario in Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Lucario is a playable character, but into Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It replaces Mewtwo as a playable character. It is unlocked by encountering it in The Subspace Emissary either from choosing it to battle and claim victory over Meta Knight or vice-versa. It can also be unlocked by playing 100 brawls or beating Target Smash!! on all difficulty levels (in either 1 or 2-player modes). Lucario also appears to be able to talk, while using his Final Smash it says "Watch the power of my Aura!" Lucario's fighting style revolves around aura manipulation and the concept of "high risk, high return"; the more damage Lucario has taken, the stronger it and its attacks become. Its power is at its peak when it has taken 200% damage, and is in last place during a fight. Lucario is placed 9th on the current Brawl tier list, making it a high-tier character.

Codec information (on Shadow Moses Island)

  • Mei Ling: "You're fighting Lucario, aren't you, Snake?"
  • Solid Snake: "Mei Ling, what's that purple fire coming out of his hands??"
  • Mei Ling: "That's his 'Aura.'"
  • Solid Snake: "Aura?"
  • Mei Ling: "I guess you could call it his life force. Lucario can use his own Aura and turn it into power. Every time Lucario's damage increases, his Aura gains strength, making his attacks more powerful. So don't think you've got him beat just because his health is down."
  • Solid Snake: "The cornered rat will bite the cat... Sounds like trouble."
  • Mei Ling: "Hey! When did you become so good with proverbs?!"
  • Solid Snake: "You must have rubbed off on me."
  • Mei Ling: "Well, come back in one piece, and I'll teach you all the Chinese proverbs you can handle."

Trophy information

Classic Mode: Lucario

An Aura Pokémon. It can track energy called Aura, which is given off by all living creatures. It's a unique combination of both Fighting- and Steel-types. Lucario evolves from Riolu during the day if its happiness has reached a certain point. It specializes in attacks that use Aura energy, like Dark Pulse and a can't-miss technique, Aura Sphere.

All-Star Mode: Aura Storm

Lucario's Final Smash. After flying off the screen, Lucario reappears in its center. It then launches a powerful Aura attack against all foes within a certain distance. The key to this attack is the ability to change its angle--it's a must to sweep slowly left and right to his selected enemies multiple times. The last blow will send the victim flying away.

NPC appearances

  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Lucario is seen as the greatest rescue leader of all time, and his adventures have become legendary. While the player never meets Lucario, Alakazam tells the player that his goal is to become closer to Lucario's greatness. Earning 15,000 Rescue Points will put the player in the top rank - the Lucario rank - at which point the Lucario statue will be displayed outside the rescue base.

Trivia

  • Lucario's English name, which is unchanged from the Japanese version, was revealed on February 9, 2006 with the announcement of the title of Lucario and the Mystery of Mew.
  • Before Pokémon Diamond and Pearl were released, many believed Lucario to be a legendary Pokémon, based on its starring role in Lucario and the Mystery of Mew. This has since been proven untrue, as it is readily available in the Generation IV games, is under ownership by NPCs, and even evolves from a Pokémon, Riolu.
    • This makes it the second non-legendary Pokémon to be in a central role in a Pokémon movie, the first being Unown.
  • Lucario is the only Pokémon other than the Cubone evolutionary family to learn Template:M2 attack.
  • Lucario is one of the three Pokémon on the player's team in the demo version of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.
  • Lucario is the first Template:Type2 and Template:Type2 Pokémon to be a fighter in the Super Smash Bros. series. On another note, Lucario is the second playable Pokémon to speak human language, after Mewtwo in Super Smash Bros. Melee (although the English version of the game removed Mewtwo's spoken lines).
  • No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Lucario.
  • Lucario is the only Template:Type2 Pokémon that receives double damage from Fighting-type moves, as well as the only Fighting-type not weak to Template:Type2 moves.
    • Lucarios is also the only Fighting-type pokemon to have its special attack stat surpassing its physical attack.
  • Three important, non-playable characters of the Diamond and Pearl games own a Lucario: Maylene, Riley, and Cynthia.
  • In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, Lucario is the only one out of three Gem Guardians that is not a legendary.
    • It is also the only Gem Guardian that has no obvious relation to its gem; Heatran, whose gem is a burning red, is part Fire-type, and Cresselia, whose gem is shaped like a crescent moon, is the Crescent Pokémon, while Lucario's gem is a blue drop. However, this may alude to the fact that in most forms it has appeared in, Aura is a blue-green.
  • Lucario is the only Pokémon learning Dragon Pulse through leveling up who is not a Dragon-type or related to a Dragon-type.
  • Cynthia, the Sinnoh Champion, who uses a Lucario, wears hairbands that strongly resemble Lucario's "Aura Sensors".
  • Lucario is the only Pokémon to have a double resistance to Template:Type2 attacks. It is also one of two Pokémon that have a double resistance to Template:Type2 moves; the other is Steelix.
  • Despite Aura Sphere being a Template:Type2 move, Lucario is the only Fighting-type Pokémon to learn this move, save for a Riolu from Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia.
  • The only types of (attacking) moves that Lucario can't learn are Template:Type2 and Template:Type2, with the exception of Hidden Power.
  • The second frame of Lucario's backsprite can be seen as the second frame of its frontal Diamond and Pearl sprite viewed from behind.

Origin

Lucario appears to be based on the Egyptian god Anubis, who has the head of a jackal. It also seems to be based on an Egyptian boxer. Boxing is a sport that is believed to have origins in Egypt. The black appendages on the back of its head are used to detect the auras of creatures and objects around it. While Lucario reads aura, it closes its eyes, and thus the appendages and the way they look "tied" around its face appear to be based on someone being blindfolded.

Name origin

Lucario's name possibly derives from part of a Japanese spelling of orichalcum in reverse, reflecting its mythical design and Steel-type. It may also refer to Cairo, Egypt,
