Sprites
Trivia
- "Kara-Tee" was Machop's original English name. This name is a corruption of karate, a fighting style.
- Machop and its evolutions have been in all regional Pokédexes.
- Unlike its past generation sprites, none of Machop's Generation IV sprites display a tail. In addition, a tail is not visible in its Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen front sprite.
- Despite their classifications, Machop and its evolutions could not learn Superpower until Pokémon Platinum.
- Despite having a tail, it cannot learn Iron Tail; this however, would be right as its next evolution doesn't have a tail.
- Before Generation III, Machop's normal color was originally brown. Also, in its Generation I back sprite, it has two ridges on its head instead of three.
- In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it's mentioned that Machop can control Aura into orbs. However, there doesn't seem to be a connection between Machop and Lucario (save for both being fighting) and Machop can't learn Aura Sphere in the games.
- Machop is one of 5 Kanto Pokemon that had it's Base EXP changed in Generation III. It's former Base EXP was 88. The others are Kabuto, Omanyte, Geodude and Abra.
Origin
Machop appears to be based on a bodybuilder.
Name origin
Machop's name may be a combination of chop and macho, which is Spanish for overly masculine or chauvinist. Macho has come to mean tough or masculine in English. Like Mr. Mime, this is not reflected in the gender distribution (even though the females are still rarer than males). Wanriky is a corruption of 腕力 wanryoku (the 力 is pronounced riki in some words), physical strength.
