Dratini (Japanese: ミニリュウ Miniryu) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.

It evolves into Dragonair starting at level 30, who evolves into Dragonite starting at level 55.

Biology

Physiology

Dratini are serpentine Pokémon that inhabit lakes and rivers. They possess fins on the sides of their heads as well as a large, round silver nose on their face. They are constantly growing, and can become quite long. As they grow, they shed their delicate deep blue skin. Dratini also seem to have a much more stocky body than their evolved form.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Behavior

Dratini are timid, elusive, and extremely shy Pokémon, causing them to be rarely seen, making people to believe it is a myth among certain communities in Kanto.

Habitat

Dratini are said to be nonexistent or one-of-a-kind Pokémon, as they are so rare. However, they are found in several places, including the Kanto Safari Zone, Dragon's Den, and Mt. Coronet.

Dratini in the anime

Dratini first appeared in EP035. The Warden of the Safari Zone was protecting the Tiny Dragon Pokémon. The episode was banned from English-audience due to excessive use of a firearm.

Dratini was also in Beauty is Skin Deep. This Dratini belonged to Clair and Team Rocket wanted to steal it from her. Clair's Dratini evolved into a Dragonair at the end of the episode.

Pokémon Special

Dratini first debuted in Drat That Dratini! in the Viridian Forest. It had been attacking Yellow but was calmed by Red.

Dratini was seen in a flashback of Lance's as a Pokémon harmed by human industrialization. This motivated Lance to formulate his plot to destroy humanity many years later.

Trivia

  • Dratini's prototype name was "Dragoon," meaning a European military unit, but was probably used as a play on the word "dragon," or as a combination of "dragon" and "lagoon."
  • Dratini's Red, Blue, and Green sprites looked more like snakes or worms than dragons because of the stripes on its underbelly (which were removed in Yellow).
  • Dratini is the first Template:Type2 Pokémon by National Pokédex order. It is also the last Pokémon to have a Generation I type that is not shared with a Pokémon of a lower number.
    • Dratini's evolutionary family is the only Dragon-type family in Generation I.
  • Dratini and its evolutions share the same species name with Horsea and its evolutions, and Salamence. They are all known as Dragon Pokémon.
  • In its Gold and Silver Template:Shiny2 sprites, it's shown to be a slightly darker blue. However, in the newer games, its shiny form is a lighter shade of purple.
    • Also, in its Generation III sprites, its body is colored purple. This was reverted to blue in its Diamond and Pearl sprites.
  • Along with Larvitar, Remoraid, and Trapinch, Dratini is one of the very few basic-stage Pokémon to learn Hyper Beam via level-up.

Origin

It appears to be based upon sea serpents or lóng, traditional Chinese dragons who bring good luck. It's constant growth is similar to that of Jourmundgundr, the norse world serpent.

Name origin

Dratini's name appears to be a combination of dragon and teeny, meaning small. Despite this, it is fairly large for a Pokémon, being nearly six feet (1.8 meters) in length. Its Japanese name, a combination of miniature and 竜 ryū, dragon, has a similar meaning.

In other languages

  • German: Dratini
  • French: Minidraco - Comes from miniature and draco, (Latin for "dragon").
  • Korean: 미뇽 Minyong
