Masquerain (Japanese: アメモース Amemoth) is a dual-type Bug/Flying Pokémon.

It evolves from Surskit starting at level 22.

Biology

Physiology

Masquerain has a light-blue body with four rhombus-shaped "feet" that also function as the Pokémon's wings. Masquerain's head is shaped like an elongated teardrop and has a pair of angry-looking antennae.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

It is capable of weliding Bug-type and Flying-type moves, but is also capable of learning many Water-type and Ice-type moves as well. Masquerain also has patterns on its wings that it uses to scare off would-be attackers. It can fly in nearly any direction, but is unable to do this if its wings get wet.

Behavior

Despite its appearence, it is usually a peaceful Pokémon.

Drew's Masquerain

Masquerain first appeared in A Fan with a Plan. Drew was seen practicing with it for the upcoming Rubello Town Contest, which was in the following episode.

In Destiny Deoxys, a Masquerain was owned by Audrey. The Eyeball Pokémon helped to rotate the fan blades of the windmills in order for LaRousse City's power to come back on.

Masquerain made a small appearance in The Rise of Darkrai as one of the Pokémon Darkrai hit with a Dark Void attack as the other trainers were attacking him.

A Masquerain made a cameo appearance in Old Rivals, New Tricks.

Ruby Masquerain intimidates enemies with the eyelike patterns on its antennas. This Pokémon flaps its four wings to freely fly in any direction - even sideways and backwards - as if it were a helicopter.
Sapphire Masquerain's antennas have eyelike patterns that usually give it an angry look. If the "eyes" are droopy and appear sad, it is said to be a sign that a heavy rainfall is on its way.
Emerald It intimidates foes with the large eyelike patterns on its antennae. Because it can't fly if its wings get wet, it shelters itself from rain under large trees and eaves.
FireRed The antennae have distinctive patterns that look like eyes. When it rains, they grow heavy, making flight impossible.
LeafGreen The antennae have distinctive patterns that look like eyes. When it rains, they grow heavy, making flight impossible.

Diamond Its antennae have eye patterns on them. Its four wings enable it to hover and fly in any direction.

Trivia

  • Masquerain's antennae changed from orange in Generation III to red in Generation IV.
  • Masquerain, a moth-like Pokémon, evolves from Surskit, a water strider-like Pokémon, despite the fact that the two real animals aren't even in the same order of insects.
  • Despite its Pokédex entries saying that it will not be able to fly during rain, in the games nothing will happen to Masquerain during rain.
  • Masquerain is so far the only Pokémon with a base stat total of 414.

Origin

Masquerain is based on insects (especially moths) with eyespots used to frighten would-be predators. It is also possible that Masquerain was designed to look like a mask. Both of its antennae have designs that look like eyes, much like an owl butterfly. Also, its flight is similar to that of a damselfly.

Name origin

Masquerain's name is a combination of masquerade, a disguise, and rain. Its Japanese name is a combination of 雨 ame, rain, and English moth.
