Admins

Why are admins here given practically unlimited control? Why isn't community consensus the driving factor behind decisions? Or is the thought process basically "Wikipedia is bad, therefore anything associated with or similar to Wikipedia is bad."? --S^hi_ny ^No_ct^ow_l 02:40, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, just look at the shitty articles the admins created. Bulbapedia is horrible. Admins wouldn't know the difference between Pokémon and Digimon. —♥ Jello 02:47, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

If I may add my two cents. I'm not an admin or anything close, but I can understand that they do what they must to keep the 'pedia running smoothly. Quality-wise, everything is excellent here. I know I don't speak on Wikipedia's behalf, but I've heard that things there get messy and unorganized. The admins here just want to keep everything organized and running. If you have a question about one of their edits, I think it would be better to simply ask why instead of getting angry at them...they're nice people, I assure you. --The ωild Snoωrunt fled! 03:03, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Redirects for Typos

I added a few redirects for types, but User:Werdnae deleted them with the reason "we don't redirect for misspellings". This is a statement, not a reason, and I can't fathom any reason not to allow redirects for typos, but just to be sure I'll give a good explanation of why you should allow redirects for typos:

1. There are ~650 Pokémon. That's a lot of spellings to remember, particularly when their names aren't (usually/exactly) real words and are sometimes just romanizations of Japanese words. While a diehard might have all the spellings committed to heart, it's not reasonable to expect every Pokémon fan to remember the spelling of every single Pokémon. There are also people like myself, who haven't played Pokémon since Gen I and are just getting into it again and can't remember how spell all the Gen I Pokémon from well over a decade ago.

• Some examples of the prevalance of name-typos:
  • Rattata: ~645,000 results for 'pokemon rattata' [1] and ~119,000 results for 'pokemon ratata' [2]
  • Pidgey: ~ 498,000 results for 'pokemon pidgey' [3] and ~47,000 results for 'pokemon pidgy' [4]
  • Roggenrola: ~236,000 results for 'pokemon roggenrola' [5] and ~51,0000 results for 'pokemon roggenrolla' [6].

2. There is practically no server overhead for redirects:

• The longest redirects are going to be less than 100 bytes
• Redirects will probably never be edited again once they are created, so their history will not build up.
• I don't have hard data to prove this, but I'd wager a redirect uses a lot less processing and bandwidth than a search or three
• A redirect definitely uses less bandwidth than loading other pages to try to find the correct spelling of the Pokémon you're looking for (example, loading Pidgeot to look for Pidgey <is it just me or are those redirects?>)

3. Redirects are basically invisible to end users, other than a tiny note at the top of the article, which is as unobtrusive as possible. This minimizes their capacity to cause confusion, and they are in no way messy.

Again, I can't imagine any sort of logical reason not to include redirects for misspellings of Pokémon's names. It's a good convenience with no downsides. This is why they are used on many other major Wikis. They are a fantastically useful feature of MediaWiki. Thelonesoldier 09:28, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

I agree with you, to an extent. Some misspelling redirects are incredibly useful, but in the past they have got a bit ridiculous. I don't remember any examples off the top of my head, but we seriously had to think how someone would misspell some names in the ways they created redirects for. For things like repeated letters, or 'Feraligater' (which probably already exists) that should be okay. More input welcome. —darklordtrom 10:32, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

If they're searching "roggenrolla", they aren't counting (11 letters). Anyway, I don't feel typo redirects are a good thing, UNLESS you can cull out any current misspelled redirects with the (Pokemon/Pokémon) tags (then they can be cool), because that'll only wind up encouraging misspellings here on the Pedia (I'm sure they already do). "Ninetails" is my misspelling vice (it's Ninetales, and I'm constantly having to check which one is correct). "Ninetails (Pokémon)" exists and do you know how much that pisses me off because it looks like the right one every time? That's like saying, "hey kids, it's cool to typo here on important links that only redirect! We don't mind!" {{p|Ninetails}} is a functioning link to Ninetales (Pokémon), and I do not think we should be encouraging that in the least. Yeah, I wouldn't want to have "Mispelling (Pokemon)" redirects because I don't think many people are going to bother to type them in like that. I hope you don't actually expect people to stop and count the number of letters in the name they're spelling :P . So between the two of you is that a go-ahead to make some redirects?
