Detective Pikachu & the Mystery of the Missing Flan (Japanese: 名探偵ピカチュウ ~華麗なるモーニングルーティン~ Detective Pikachu ~Splendid Morning Routine~) is an animated short released on the official Pokémon YouTube channels worldwide and on Weibo and Bilibili in mainland China on October 25, 2023.

Blurb

Detective Pikachu just wants to film his morning routine, but Tim has a bigger problem: his flan has disappeared from the fridge! It’s definitely a mysterious case, but if anyone can solve it, this dynamic duo can in the animated short “Detective Pikachu & the Mystery of the Missing Flan”!

Plot

Detective Pikachu is filming his morning routine, drinking coffee, having an apple for breakfast, and reading the newspaper. Just then, Tim arrives, and find his flan missing from the fridge. While Pikachu is annoyed at Tim for ruining his shoot, Tim accuses Pikachu of eating his flan, which he was looking forward to having later. Pikachu doesn't know what Tim is talking about, and explains his shoot, saying that sharing daily activities online is very popular. Tim tells Pikachu not to change the subject, and asks who could have eaten his flan if it wasn't Pikachu. Hearing the sound of a clapperboard, Tim turns around and is surprised by a Munchlax. Pikachu explains that his friend Munchlax is helping him with the shoot. Tim says that Munchlax looks like a Pokémon who eats a lot, causing a banana hidden in Munchlax's fur to fall out. Tim notices that this was a banana he and Pikachu bought earlier, which causes Munchlax to run off in fear. Tim chases Munchlax, who slips on a skateboard and is thrown at the ceiling fan. A lot of food hidden in Munchlax's fur begins to fall out as Munchlax hangs onto the fan, until Pikachu turns the fan off and Tim catches Munchlax. Munchlax admits to taking the banana, but doesn't know anything about the flan.

Pikachu feels this mystery calls for a great detective, and he and Tim surmise that the flan must've disappeared when Tim had gone out for a morning walk. Tim realizes that since Pikachu was shooting a video, the camera may have caught something on film. Pikachu and Tim review the footage, finding that the flan was still in the fridge when Pikachu opened it for his breakfast, and remaining closed in view of the camera until Tim opened it later and found the flan missing. This means that the crime took place inside a sealed room. Printing out photos from the footage, Pikachu feels something looks odd in both of them. Opening the fridge, Pikachu gets a bolt of brilliance, figuring out who the flan thief is. Pikachu points to an apple, which leaps out of of the fridge and starts to roll away. Tim catches the apple, which turns out to be an Applin. Pikachu theorizes it must've been mixed with the fruit they bought earlier.

Later, drinking coffee, Pikachu states that it tastes best after solving a case. Tim asks how Pikachu figured out that the culprit was an Applin, with Pikachu explaining that the position of the fruit inside the fridge had changed. Tim compliments Pikachu's powers of observation, to which Pikachu states that solving cases before breakfast is nothing out of the ordinary for a great detective. Tim, however, notes that Pikachu was in the middle of having breakfast. Munchlax eats the banana, and seems to remember something important. Pikachu tells Tim that they have a new client, and a busy day ahead of them.
