Possible Origin

Possible new Origin reference discovered for Runerigus including its strange evolution method.

Many runestones which Runerigus are based off of are numbered for archeological purposes. #U49 in particular uses red markings to depict a coiled serpent on gray stone. The appearance is of course similar to the Pokemon itself and 49 is the HP damage Yamask needs to evolve.

The Wikipedia article on the Lovö Runestones has a picture of the particular runestone in question. The link was blocked by the spam filter.

This seems worthy of a shoutout in the Origin section for Runerigus and possibly Yamask as well.- unsigned comment from PossiblyJoe (talkcontribs)

I've mentioned this on the Discord, but i personally think this is a mere coincidence. Let me break it down this way:
  • The Lovö Runestones are a set of 5 runestones found in the Lovö church in Sweden (so already far away from the UK, the inspiration for Galar).
  • They are numbered U 46-U 50.
  • They all have red serpent markings on them. In fact, serpents are a really common motif in runestones.
So idk, i just don't really believe Game Freak would base a mon off of a specific Swedish runestone numbered "49" (which itself is otherwise unremarkable compared to other runestones), rather than the concept of runestones in general. Occam's razor is in full effect here; the explanation with a simpler or less elaborate underlying assumption is more likely.
besides, we already have an explanation for "49"; it's the whole Buddhist purgatory belief thing. Anzasquiddles (talk) 15:11, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
