Talk:Size discrepancies in the animated series

Don't forget Ponyta, it was like way taller then it should be in the Flam-Pokeathon. - - unsigned comment from Kojiro (talk • contribs)
- And Charizard! That Fire Pokémon is far bigger in the anime than in the games! - Taylor 00:12, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
- I would have to say that I think the height and weight of a Pokémon mentioned in the Pokédex is mostly an average, like saying humans have an average height while we all have different ones. We know Pokémon are born small and grow larger, not just when they evolve. Aside from the obvious example of Kangaskhan, look at Gary's Krabby. When Ash caught his Krabby (I remember as this was the first Pokémon Ash caught that was instantly sent to Prof. Oak), it was average Krabby size. When Ash checked on it one day with Prof. Oak, it was with Gary's Krabby, which was significantly larger. MK 03:57, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, it's an average, but with some Pokemon like Roselia the difference is absurd enough to make Drew's seem like a freak of nature. It was three times the size of a "normal" Roselia. --Zeta 05:23, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
- Why has Mantine been removed? --Davidaipom 09:56, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

What should really be the authority, though? Of course, in the games, the Pokédex entries are averages, but I've always thought of the anime as being more realistic than the games, and thus more like what the creators had in mind. So, maybe the games are wrong to start with? --sHoggard - rookie Pokéwiz 22:48, 2 August 2010 (UTC)
- That's ridiculous. How can the original medium the franchise (and most Pokémon) debuted on be wrong while one of its adaptations is correct? Do you also consider Ground Pokémon to be susceptible to Electric attacks rather than immune to them, seeing how that's the way they were portrayed in the Anime? - Ericss 16:49, 14 May 2011 (UTC)
Numel
I remember an episode where a random girl had a ranch of Numels and it whas hilarious ROFL. THOSE NUMELS WERE AT LEAST 5'0" TALL!!! I mean because their actual size is something like a dog... 2'0" I think. hfc2X 03:53, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
- Think about what Numel is based on, a dromedary. That makes 2'0" seem very small, since adult dromedaries can be taller than most humans. --sHoggard - rookie Pokéwiz 22:41, 2 August 2010 (UTC)
- dont reply to old comments....especially 2 year old ones... (Ataro 23:10, 2 August 2010 (UTC))
Gabite
I'm adding Urara's Gabite on the page. It says Gabite is normally 4'7. Ash Dawn and are around 5 foot. When Urara shows up, she's around the same height. Then, when she sends her Gabite out, its gotta be at least a couple inches taller than her AND Ash and Dawn.--DRAGONBEASTX 11:39, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
- Could it be possible that the heights (and indeed weights) listed in the Pokédex are just averages? This could well be possible, as even in the Generation II games there is a man at the Lake of Rage who is looking for large Magikarp, and he tells you how big the Magikarp is that you caught. And the Dunsparce that was the size of a Pidgey could be a young one. Just a theory! Taromon777 12:18, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
Averages?
Could it be possible that the heights and weights listed in the Pokédex are just averages? In the Generation II games there is a man at Lake of Rage who is looking for large Magikarp, and he tells you how big yours are; some of them are bigger than they are mentioned to be in the Pokédex. And the Pidgey-sized Dunsparce in Following a Maiden's Voyage could have been a baby. Just a theory! Taromon777 12:21, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
- Ehh, I guess so. In generation III games, the brothers that are arguing about the biggest Lotad/Seedot.. As I recall. ►Ҝəυzø8 12:27, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
What about Chingling
They were almost bigger than Chimecho in the episode where they made their debut. --Kid Sonic 16:23, 18 September 2009 (UTC)
Height and length
Regarding Dunsparce, Ekans and Seviper: Height, in these cases, does refer to length. You can see this by using the size comparison feature of the Pokedex. A stretched-out Ekans would be 2m, but coiled up, it's naturally going to be smaller. Put simply, the Dex seems to measure height sometimes, and length at other times, depending on the body type of the Pokémon. The figures quoted for serpent, fish-like and arthropod-like Pokémon actually seems to be length, which is the only meaningful way of measuring them. Vertical height seems to be used for bipeds, quadrupeds, birds and anything amorphous. There are a few anomalies with this (Furret's measurement is actually head-to-tail and not vertical) but it seems to hold in the majority of cases. With that in mind, I'm going to removed the aforementioned entries. Bikini Miltank 15:14, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
- On second thoughts, I've only removed Ekans, since it's the only one that this really applies to. That Dunsparce in DP001 was tiny, whether you measure it in length or height, and the issue with Seviper seems to be inconsistency. I can't say I've noticed this, but I'll leave it in for now. For Dunsparce and Seviper, I've removed the comments that the height might refer to length - because, while it does, it wouldn't actually make any difference to these cases either way. Anime heights and “average height”
It’s pretty ridiculous to refer to exact measurements in the anime. Someone with more patience than me should go and remove them all. Instead, we should just use comparisons in prose to indicate the difference. For example:
“One of the more infamous size changes is the height of Roselia. In the Pokédex, an average Roselia extremely small - only about 1'00" tall. At this size, it would not come up to most humans’ knees. However, the Roselia in the anime come up to a 10-year old child’s waist, meaning they are well over twice as tall, perhaps 3 times their average size in the games. This caused much confusion when Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon Adventures both featured the Pokémon at its actual size, as it looked tiny to anime fans, when compared to the images they were used to.”. I also cleaned up the prose a bit in that example because frankly the writing in this article stinks link last week’s garbage.
Wailmer is close to being O.K. and only needs a slight adjustment: “Wailmer are generally 6'07", 7-10" taller than an average adult human male, although the one in “Leading a Stray!” was shown to be more than twice the size of Ash.”. We need to use the tooltips, parentheses look awful. I’m doing it this way because it is how measurements appear in the infoboxes on species articles, although if most English games worldwide use the metric system, perhaps we should flip that. Also, make sure the calculations are correct! And where do the character heights come from? Are they official? If not they need to go.
I agree that given “bring me the biggest” characters in the games, Pokédex listings are probably averages, but still there is a certain level of deviation that goes beyond reasonable expectation( if the average adult male human is, say, 5'9", we still consider a foot less, 4'10", very short, and a foot more, 6'10", very tall). --LaprasBoi 04:20, 7 December 2009 (UTC)
What about the manga?
Adventures seems to have a lot of gigantic and miniature Pokémon; is this notable enough to get a page? Or should we just simply make a single "Pokémon size discrepancies" page with discrepancies from various Pokémon media, such as the manga AND anime? - 050294 14:08, 11 April 2010 (UTC)
- Quite a bit of research would be needed. Granted, there'll be unexplained size discrepancies in just about any adaptation of the franchise, but if the various mangas have enough of them, then a whole page for just those discrepancies would not be a bad idea...--Shiningpikablu252 18:11, 11 April 2010 (UTC)
Wailord
Wailord are supposed to be 47 feet tall, even if that is only the average than everything close to that would be incredibly large. In the anime episode, leading a stray, they aren't very tall at all. Flyingtypefan 06:54, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
- For serpent or fish-like Pokémon, the height often refers to the length instead. So while that Wailord certainly doesn't tower over buildings and whatnot, I'm pretty sure it was the right size. --AndyPKMN 15:40, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
- They didn't seem very long either... Flyingtypefan 01:51, 28 August 2010 (UTC)
Slowking
In the games, Slowking is 6'07", taller than the player character in HGSS (4'11"). I don't remember exactly, but I think Slowking in The Power of One was much shorter than that. -- Zedd 14:41, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
Torkoal
In the games, Torkoal is a foot and eight inches, but Ash's Torkoal looks like it's 4 feet and eight inches..... just saying..... Cyndaquil155 02:56, 8 August 2010 (UTC)
Palpitoad?
I thought Palpitoad's size was wibbley wobbley, llie Seviper and Togekiss's? Diamond Lanturn CodeName: 05308 22:02, 27 November 2011 (UTC)
Ash's height
Several place in this article we assume that ash is about five feet tall. This seems very unlikely given that the average height of a ten year old boy is around four foot three. And given that this is incorrect it would change what we believe is the height of several Pokemon in the anime please just give some feedback.|Pool501 19:52, 19 February 2012 (UTC)
- Ash seems to be right around 3 Pikachus tall from what I've seen, with some minor variations from one episode to the next. Which would be around 4 feet tall (1'04" x 3), give or take an inch or two depending on the episode. There is absolutely no way he's 5 feet tall, though this isn't the first time I've seen someone randomly assume he was 5+ feet in height despite how short he is compared to everything else in the anime (whether it's Pokémon or other humans.) Pidgeot
Isn´t Sir Aarons Pidgeot a bit bigger than most other Pidgeots??(Donphan:) 21:53, 30 April 2012 (UTC))
Joltik
Would the Joltik in Crisis at Chargestone Cave! count? Or do they just shrink when they don't have electricity? プリングルズ/品客薯片/ప్రింగిల్స్ 20:39, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
- Joltik are naturally very small. If you go to Joltik's page you can see a comparison of Joltik and a Beartic for a better visual. --Pokemaster97 20:44, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
- K, thanks. プリングルズ/品客薯片/ప్రింగిల్స్ 21:18, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
How is Ash five feet tall?
This doesn't make sense. See here. He's ten! I'm thirteen and I'm 4'11"! How is he five feet tall? This is a very unreasonable assumption. Pikachu Bros. (talk) 00:25, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
- To be honest, it feels like this whole page is just one big assumption (which is why I'm not a fan of it in the first place). There's never going to be a way to know Ash's height for sure unless they officially release it. It's not really worth debating about it. --Pokemaster97 00:29, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
Nurse Joy's Wigglytuff?
The Wigglytuff used by Nurse Joys in Kalos are definitely oversized. Should they go on here too? Hyper Turtwig (talk) 22:38, 12 February 2015 (UTC)
This article is incomplete.
It says that images are required for other Pokemon, if you let me know what images you would like, I can upload them for this page.--BigDocFan (talk) 15:51, 9 July 2021 (UTC)
- Check how this page looked yesterday. I added all images I could find in the archives but some are not perfect. I would request better images for Groudon, Grovyle, Ledian, Lombre, Tyson's Metagross, Winona's Skarmory, preferably with human standing to compare.--Rocket Grunt 15:58, 9 July 2021 (UTC)
- The ones I've removed seem more because of a perception thing, rather than them actually being larger/smaller. The animator may have drawn those smaller/larger to emphasise that it's far or closer to the camera. Also, some of the ones whose difference if below 1 meter (or even below 0.5 meter) seem more like stretches. It's not really something you can just tell...--ForceFire 13:06, 12 July 2021 (UTC)
Move
This should be moved to "Size discrepancies in the anime" to match the other anime articles such as "Timeline of events in the anime" and "List of clothing in the anime". Landfish7 20:18, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
Golem
Currently in the process of uploading new images to go on the article, what episodes feature Golem that are shorter than normal?--BigDocFan, Junior Admin Bulbapedia (talk) 12:25, 3 September 2024 (UTC)
