Failure

Does anyone know if this move has a percent chance of failure? Schreiber 13:57, 14 November 2009 (UTC)

I've seen Teleport fail a few times, but only in Generation I. And Generation I had less-accurate battle mechanics than the later games do.--Purimpopoie 13:59, 14 November 2009 (UTC)

I too have seen teleport fail but I don't know the % ^

could someone please get a screenshot or .gif of the the first gen version of this move being used in battle? PLEAAAASE? - unsigned comment from Clay1st (talkcontribs)

There is no percentage of fail, unless the player has a fail moment. You can't use Teleport when in a trainer battle, or when Wrap, Whirlpool, Fire Spin, Magma Storm, Bind, or Sand Tomb was used on your Pokémon. R.A. Hunter Blade 15:13, 24 December 2009 (UTC)

Location

Is there any definite information on where it can be used? Is it the same as Fly, or are the location requirements different? --Kerrick 18:14, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

Teleport can be used in caves, whereas Fly cannot, although I'm not sure if Teleport can be used to escape buildings. - Takoto 18:50, 19 April 2010 (UTC)
I'm not sure what game you're talking about, but in Generations I-III, it cannot be used in either caves or buildings. I've never personally tried it in IV or V, so I can't be sure about those. --MrKiwi 18:37, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

Field Move

At the top of the page, there is a link to "Field move", but while it links to the Ranger field moves, it doesn't say if it is meant to be the Ranger field moves, or the Main Series field moves? Which one should it be? XVuvuzela2010X 04:43, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

The Ranger one (Specifically, SoA and GS). The main series one is what this page is about anyway. Werdnae (talk) 06:19, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

Error

I'm pretty sure that when used outside of battle, this definition can't be right. While playing Platinum, I healed at the Hearthome City Pokemon Center, then went to the Hearthome Gym and battled a few trainers. Then I stepped outside the building (so I was outside, right in front of the door) and tried to teleport with my Ralts. However, it said that it couldn't be used there. Acts like Dig in Ranger series

In PRSoA and PRGS, the Teleport field move functions the same way Dig does in the main series (escape from caves), should this be mentioned somewhere? Digifiend (talk) 00:56, 4 August 2012 (UTC)

Escaping from Shadow Tag

For some reason, a Kirlia was able to successfully Teleport away from my Wobbuffet despite its ability being Shadow Tag. I'm not sure if it's because of Trace, or if there is a way to escape despite being trapped. UxieLover1994 (talk) 16:43, 18 May 2016 (UTC)

Late, but it would be due to Trace. Pokémon with Shadow Tag are immune to Shadow Tag from Generation IV onward. --SnorlaxMonster 14:35, 30 April 2017 (UTC)

Teleport and Roar/Whirlwind Gen II fail chances

(Preamble: While I'll also point here when an edit summary can't handle everything, this mainly is for transparency. Only publishing information enables others to use it for themselves, or to potentially challenge it. And hey, this is a wiki, and it's got talk pages.)

As I said here, I have now revisited Teleport and Roar/Whirlwind in Gen II. The procedure is very similar to what we already have at Whirlwind/Roar in Generation III. More specifically, it should be as follows (with U=user's level, T=opponent's level; please don't trust all the pokecrystal comments):

If (U ≥ T) succeed
Generate a random number R∈[0;U+T] *
If (R ≥ T/4) succeed
else fail

For Teleport, the last line is buggy for non-player Pokémon: they flee (succeed) either way. Teleport fails in Trainer battles, Whirlwind/Roar just have different effects. Whirlwind/Roar also fail if they're not used last this turn. Neither is affected by binding moves or Smoke Balls. (In addition, Whirlwind/Roar are different in that they can miss/fail due to accuracy/evasion, and they're also not affected by Mean Look or Spider Web).

Please also note that the chance of failure starts at approximately 12.5%, but drops when the user's level is higher. (This also applies to Whirlwind/Roar Gen III, although the additional +1 in the numerator really ruins it for low levels; I think imma just remove that from the Gen III section then, if that's okay with everyone.) Nescientist (talk) 18:26, 7 May 2017 (UTC)

The same also applies in Generation I (code), the difference being that the code isn't buggy (and the comments aren't as bad). Nescientist (talk) 21:08, 10 May 2017 (UTC)

Setting teleport location

Teleport usually returns you to the last Pokémon Center you've healed at, but I have vague memories of some games also counting it if you interact with the PC (even if you didn't heal). I can confirm that the PC doesn't count in the 1st-gen games, but I'm not sure about any other generations.
I'm also not sure if you actually have to heal, or if just talking to the nurse is enough. -Spudwalt (talk) 17:10, 19 July 2020 (UTC)

Okay, can confirm that in Gen I, you have to actually talk to the nurse to set a Pokémon Center as the Teleport location, but Gens II-IV set the location when you enter a Pokémon Center. Not sure about generations V-VII, since I don't have those immediately to hand at the moment. -spudwalt (talk) 07:15, 28 July 2020 (UTC)
Thanks, that's a start. :) Feel free to add it to the actual article where appropriate. Nescientist (talk) 18:00, 28 July 2020 (UTC)
I think I've researched everything necessary? Turns out not being able to Teleport in cities is only a Gen IV thing. Also, the ability to Teleport back to your house started in Gen IV. Also also, as far as I'm aware, only Pokémon Centers and your house count for Teleport destinations; tried it with the old lady who heals you on Route 111, and that didn't work, nor did the various Nurses/Doctors in Gen V.
I'll go ahead and update the article with my findings. If anybody can think of any other weird edge cases for Teleport destinations, I can look into them, but I think we can probably pull the research template now. -spudwalt (talk) 07:48, 29 July 2020 (UTC)
Thanks. One minor thing is that I'm interested in the Silph Co. lady in Generation I, and whether you can teleport there. (I might have a look myself at a later date.) Nescientist (talk) 16:02, 29 July 2020 (UTC)
Checked, no. It appears to be the black out location, which is updated whenever you heal at a Pokémon Center in Generation I (or to the player's house whenever you beat the E4). Nescientist (talk) 11:16, 1 August 2020 (UTC)
So, while investigating softlocks, Alucard noticed that Cinnabar Island is never treated as the last Pokémon Center you visited in HGSS (for Teleport or blacking out).
When I went to investigate this, I found something else that's really strange. Normally, you can't Teleport between regions (the game won't let you use it if your last visited Pokémon Center is in a different region). However, my last visited Pokémon Center was Frontier Access. For some reason, I couldn't use Teleport in any location in either region (including within Frontier Access itself) except at Indigo Plateau or Route 26 (from where you can Fly to either region) and Route 22, Route 28, and Route 27 (which are adjacent to the first two); in every other location I tried (in both regions), Teleport fails when the destination would be Frontier Access. --SnorlaxMonster 03:36, 29 August 2020 (UTC)
Okay, I have identified the issue. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, Teleport always fails when I use it in a location with a Pokémon Center or the Pokéathlon Dome (it may at first appear to be flight locations, but it doesn't fail when used at Victory Road or Indigo Plateau). It works across regions just fine. --SnorlaxMonster 04:00, 29 August 2020 (UTC)
