Talk:Urshifu (Pokémon)
Does anybody else think Gigantamax Urshifu was inspired by wrathful deities?
A wrathful deity is a ferocious defender of Buddhism who often has a very demonic appearance. This form is said to be taken by the bodhisattvas in the Underworld to judge and punish the wicked.
The reason I bring this up is because the official site describes Gigantamax Urshifu Single Strike Style as the embodiment of rage, and a divine emissary which expels evil spirits with its sheer anger, and it also says that Gigantamax Urshifu Rapid Strike Style stares at people and Pokémon so intensely they feel their souls being examined on a very personal level, while some actually feel as if they have been cleansed of the taint left behind by evil spirits
--Adelon (talk) 15:54, 10 January 2020 (UTC)
- That does seem possible and that evil spirits might be possibly involved in story,--Jacob Kogan (talk) 15:56, 10 January 2020 (UTC)
- I am not permitted to directly edit this page, but I'd like the above trivia about fierce deities to be added. Is it suitable for the article? On a related topic, somebody added trivia about Urshifu's typing, suggesting it had a connection to the idea of being like water, but I feel the explanation may have to be clarified somewhat. --Adelon (talk) 21:23, 14 January 2020 (UTC)
Form image
The main image should have the two styles side by side like with Toxtricity. I don't have a program with transparency so I can't edit the file and merge them myself. Pallukun (talk) 00:06, 12 January 2020 (UTC)
- Agreed... I have uploaded Urshifu.png on the Archives for this use. --celadonk (talk) 15:26, 12 January 2020 (UTC)
- I'd agree, but from what I know, the template doesnt currently allow for this to be possible without removing their single strike and rapid strike labels (in fact you'd notice the Toxtricity images don't label their forms either). Either the templates would need to change to make this possible, or they'd be merged without form labels. Lanthanum (talk) 16:52, 12 January 2020 (UTC)
- Basculin does it. Admittedly the Gigantamax does mess some things up, with both Toxtricity and Urshifu. Although I don't think it's as much of a problem for Urshifu since both forms have the same ability. --celadonk (talk) 17:14, 12 January 2020 (UTC)

Gigantamax Urshifu Single & Rapid Strike Style revealed during Pokémon Direct 1.9.2020
Um, Gigantamax Urshifu Single & Rapid Strike Style was revealed in Pokémon Direct 1.9.2020, so why not add in the images? I got them right here: https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/File:Gigantamaxurshifu1.jpg https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/File:Gigantamaxurshifu2.jpg - BTCGBP2004 (Talk) 21:23, 22 February 2020 (UTC)
- Do you mind uploading those images as png files instead? --celadonk (talk) 22:40, 22 February 2020 (UTC)
- Ok, here they are: https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/File:Urshifu_Single_Strike-Gigantamax.png https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/File:Urshifu_Rapid_Strike-Gigantamax.png - BTCGBP2004 (Talk) 00:28, 23 February 2020 (UTC)
Legendary Status
Is there an official source that states that Kubfu and Urshifu are legendaries? Because on the Pokémon Home GTS, if you tell it to filter out the results of people asking for Legendary and Mythical Pokémon, people asking for Kubfu or Urshifu are still shown, which seems to imply that they aren't Legendary Pokémon. The Pokemon expansion Pass Trailer during Pokemon Direct established it was a Legendary months ago back in January. Even the official Sword and Shield Website mentions this.--Jacob9594 (talk) 02:23, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
Crediting Bruce Lee for martial arts referencing water
'Rapid Strike Style's Water typing may be a reference to the "flow like water" quote by famous actor and martial artist Bruce Lee.'
I don't think this makes sense. Water is commonly referenced in East Asian martial arts. It is part of both 5 elemental systems used in East Asian cultures, as well as the 8 trigrams system. So it doesn't seem valid to credit Bruce Lee for inspiration, even in the slightest, not without proof to show a leaning that makes sense as opposed to just going by general martial arts knowledge/understanding. If the quote kind of explained both the Dark- and Water-typing, I would be more inclined to find it believable on its own.
Therefore, I recommend taking this line out entirely. It's just claiming something specific when all signs point to something more generic right now.

Contributing to the Biology section of Urshifu
Was pointed to this Talk topic by Chosen. I've written out an appearance description with references provided below. Hopefully this can become a good descriptive. Feel free to add on if you want.
[ Urshifu is a large bipedal Pokémon resembling a humanoid Asian Black Bear with a Wushu motif. It has a muscular build with long legs and long arms with large paws and claws for striking. Its body and head are covered in gray, black, and white fur, minus the yellow muzzle. The front of Urshifu's pelt slightly resembles a traditional frog buttoned (also known as braid buttoned) Kung Fu/Tai Chi uniform used for Wushu and general relaxation by Chinese elders whilst the hanging off ends on both front and back might take inspiration from Shaolin uniforms. The fur on top of Single Strike and Rapid Strike form's head and legs will go up or down depending on the form. The spikier fur on the heads of both Single Strike and Rapid Strike form flare up or out respectively into a flowing headband with the only consistency between forms being the colors: white on top, black on bottom. The design of the back of Urshifu's hands and knuckles which are white in color over black fur might be a potential reference to the gloves found in mixed martial arts and sometimes in Wushu fighting; Urshifu's feet also share the white knuckles which may be a reference to kick boxing, another style of Wushu martial arts.
Both forms Urshifu take unique stances based on a mixture real styles of martial arts:
Single Strike's stance is based on a mixture of Tiger style and Leopard style, styles based on precise, strong and direct strikes which can give meaning to Single Strike's unique move, Wicked Blow; which always lands in a critical hit and described to be a singular, strong punch and references both Leopard style's way of looking to take down opponents as swiftly as it can and Tiger style's direct attack with overwhelming strength and power.
Rapid Strike's stance is based on a mixture of Crane style and Seven Star Mantis style, styles based around flowing movements, balance, dodging, deflecting, and tactile overwhelming blows, just like Rapid Strike and its signature move, Surging Strikes; which is given a further nod to the movements given and flowing, flurrying strikes delivered in the Japanese name: Streaming Strikes. ]
References used are Gnoggin (cross-referenced for accuracy), extensive searches of martial arts outfits and styles (Wikipedia included), and staring at Urshifu in-game for an unhealthy amount of hours. - unsigned comment from Firith (talk • contribs)
- It a nice start but its missing the Describing the Gigantamax Urshifu's appearance. Plus there too much references in the description of Urshifu, other than that a lot of potential references to use.--Jacob9594 (talk) 04:01, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
Evolution method
It's slightly inaccurate to say Kubfu evolves based on which Tower it's trained in. It's really just based on which Scroll it sees. A Kubfu trained in Tower of Darkness can be traded into another game that unlocked Tower of Waters and evolve into Rapid Strike, and vice versa. And in fact, in each save-file, only one Kubfu can be "trained". Then the Tower empties out, and if you ever get another Kubfu, all you have to do is walk to the top floor and interact with the Scroll. TehPerson (talk) 18:08, 21 June 2020 (UTC)
Urshifu and Hokuto no Ken ?
Don't you think the fact Urshifu was based on a bear, it uses martial arts and cleans the evil is based on Kenshiro the main character of the anime Hokuto no Ken ( fist of the north star ) ? - unsigned comment from Hades (talk • contribs)
Duplicate Base Stats
Both form differences of Urshifu have the exact same base stats, so the second base stats table for the Rapid-Strikes style is not needed. Other Pokémon, such as Castform or Oricorio, do not have multiple tables showing the same base stats, even when their other forms also change their typing. Henrai (talk) 10:15, 22 September 2020 (UTC)
- I guess you can just put one table and say "stats are identical between single and rapid forms" Pallukun (talk) 10:32, 22 September 2020 (UTC)
- Hmm. I remember removing the duplicate base stats a few months ago, so someone must've added them back. AmbientDinosaur (talk) 16:42, 22 September 2020 (UTC)
Box mascot form
The page here says that Urshifu appears as the mascot for the Isle of Armor "in its Single Strike Style." However, the artwork of Urshifu that appears on the Expansion Pass box art is actually in a neutral stance that is shared by both forms. Single Strike's hair, leg fur, and headband all flare noticeably upward when it enters battle, while Rapid Strike's flares downward in the same situation - however, when not in battle (i.e. in Pokémon Camp or when following the player in the overworld), the fur is more perpendicular to Urshifu's head and legs, and its headband trails behind it more naturally. In Camp, the Single and Rapid Strike styles are indistinguishable because of this, and it is probably also why Urshifu uses the same box sprite regardless of which form you have. The official artwork for the Expansion Pass is more consistent with this "neutral" appearance, probably to avoid giving favor to either of the two forms. For simplicity's sake, I propose that we simply change the line to say "Urshifu is the game mascot of The Isle of Armor, appearing on the boxarts of the Pokémon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass" without specifically mentioning either form.
