The Towers of Ecruteak
There's a legend that has been passed down by Ecruteak Gym Leaders for many years:
- Two towers... Two Pokémon... But when one burned down, both Pokémon flew away, never to return.

HISTORY OF ECRUTEAK
In ECRUTEAK, there were two towers. Each tower was the roost of powerful flying POKéMON. But one of the towers burned to the ground. The two POKéMON haven't been seen since… ECRUTEAK was also home to three POKéMON that raced around the town. They were said to have been born of water, lightning and fire. But they could not contain their excessive power. So they say the three ran like the wind off into the grassland. |

In the distant past... When this tower burned in a fire, three nameless Pokémon perished in it. Then, a rainbow-hued Pokémon descended from the sky and somehow brought them back... The people were afraid of power such as the rainbow-hued Pokémon had shown. They tried to control it by force. The nameless Pokémon made no attempt to fight back. Instead, their great sorrow compelled them to leave. This legend has been passed down by the Ecruteak Gym Leader. Me? I was a Trainer way back when. Ho ho ho! | |
The tower that used to be here... I heard that it used to be much taller before it was burned by a fire. | |
Past here is the Bell Tower. This tower was built as a place of rest for HO-OH, the legendary Flying-type Pokémon. Since HO-OH left, many people have gone up to the tower to try to bring it back. But none have succeeded in making HO-OH appear... Morty, the Gym Leader, is one who has tried. You don’t seem to have the Ecruteak Gym Badge. If you can’t even defeat Morty, going up there will be a waste of time. Sorry, but you’ll have to leave. | |
The Johto region has two legends. One is the legend about Whirl Islands. The other is the Bell Tower legend... We have been passing down the Bell Tower legend for generations in Ecruteak City. | |
The rainbow-hued Pokémon flying gracefully over the tower... The silvery, sparkling Pokémon resting gently upon the whirling seabed... All of this is far beyond my imagination. | |
Have you heard that they are talking about rebuilding the Burned Tower? There will be two towers again! I’m looking forward to it! | |
They say that they will start the construction work to rebuild this tower soon! | |
This happened when I was young. The sky suddenly turned black. A giant Flying-type Pokémon was blocking out the sun. I wonder what that Pokémon was? It was like a bird and like a dragon. | |
They built the new Radio Tower to replace the old, creaky one. | |
There used to be a tower right here. When the tower was replaced with the Radio Tower, that Rainbow Wing was found at the top of the tower. I heard from a friend from Cianwood City that you can climb the Bell Tower in Ecruteak City when you have a Rainbow Wing. I have to get back to my office. See you! | |
There used to be a tower right here. When the tower was replaced with the Radio Tower, that Silver Wing was found at the top of the tower. I heard from a friend from Cianwood City that you can go down the cave at Whirl Islands when you have a Silver Wing. I have to get back to my office. See you! | |
Oh, I almost forgot! According to my friend from Cianwood City, the legendary Pokémon will not appear if you just go up to the top of the Bell Tower with only that Rainbow Wing. Apparently there is something else you need... Or something like that. I wonder what it was... I can’t remember. | |
Have you heard of the Bell Tower in Ecruteak? There are what they call Clear Bells on top of the tower. They don’t make a single noise in strong winds. There is only one way to make them ring. It is to obtain another Clear Bell | |
Oh! You’ve managed to get a Clear Bell? The old-time dream of mine... I see... You’ve done it... ... ...I can hear it! The chime of the bells on the wind coming from the direction of the Bell Tower... | |
Oh! You’ve managed to get a Tidal Bell? The old-time dream of mine... I see... You’ve done it... ... ...I can hear it! The chime of the bells on the sea breeze coming from the direction of the Whirl Islands... | |
Morty: It’s good of you to have come. Here in Ecruteak, Pokémon have long been revered. It’s said that a rainbow-hued Pokémon will come down to appear before a truly powerful Trainer. I believed that tale, so I have secretly trained here all my life. As a result, I can now see what others cannot. I see a shadow of the person who will make the Pokémon appear. I believe that person is me! You’re going to help me reach that level! | |
Morty: I get it... The person the Kimono Girls were talking about must be you... Never mind. You should be strong enough to go across the sea. When you go west and then south, you’ll reach Olivine City. Why don’t you head for it? | |
Morty, the Gym Leader, ascended this tower to try to bring back HO-OH, because it no longer appears. Even he couldn’t bring it back. You don’t seem to have the Ecruteak Gym Badge. If you can’t even defeat Morty, going up there will be a waste of time. Sorry, but you’ll have to leave. | |
Morty: The legendary Pokémon did not choose me... But that does not mean that I have lost out on my future. I will continue my training until I discover a new future for me. Say, do you want to be part of my training? | |
Morty: My name is Morty. I am Ecruteak’s Gym Leader. Because my old friend Eusine is here on the trail of SUICUNE, I decided to investigate the Burned Tower. Ecruteak has a legend about these legendary Pokémon: SUICUNE, ENTEI, and RAIKOU. As the Gym Leader of Ecruteak, I must have a proper understanding of it. | |
I see... That’s the Ecruteak Gym Badge. The Badge alone will not do any good, but I can let you through. Please, do go on. | |
I see... That’s the Ecruteak Gym Badge. The Badge alone will not do any good, but I can let you through. Please, do go on. | |
Only those who possess the Rainbow Wing are given permission to go up to the top of the Bell Tower... But the rainbow-hued Pokémon will not come down for just anybody who goes up there. There must be something else you need. I’ve heard the Kimono Girls know something about it. | |
Is there really a Pokémon that big? If it exists, it must be powerful. | |
Welcome. My name is Zuki. I met you previously in Violet City. In order to bring back LUGIA, we needed someone with the right bond with Pokémon. We asked Mr. Pokémon to give this Mystery Egg to whoever showed true potential. The Egg was eventually handed from Mr. Pokémon to Professor Elm, and then to you. However, being pure alone will not be sufficient to face the power of this Pokémon. I must test you. Are you ready? | |

Johto Case Notes: File Number Two Our Radio Crew saw it! Heard it! There’s a huge shadow of a Pokémon swimming around the Whirl Islands! Is it a legendary Pokémon? Is it a new species of Pokémon? This program will aim a spotlight at these kinds of issues by doing a thorough investigation. Please tune in! | |
The voyaging search party tried to think of a solution to the puzzle, but their thoughts were interrupted and washed away by the sound of the waves around the Whirl Islands. The shadow of a huge Pokémon shifted and shook in the violent sea filled with whirlpools... Tune in next time for the exciting conclusion in the special program, “The Legend Disappeared into the Whirlpool!” | |
The Bell Tower shook! It must be HO-OH... HO-OH must have returned to the top! | |
Such a young one to take on HO-OH... | |
So many people have gone up the tower with a Rainbow Wing to try and bring back HO-OH. But none succeeded in making HO-OH appear... The Rainbow Wing is merely to permit you to go up this tower. What HO-OH has longed for is the invisible trust between people and Pokémon... Or the person who can restore such a relationship... | |
A long time ago, there used to be a Pokémon at the top of this tower, namely HO-OH. But it flew away, and no one has seen it since... If anyone who could restore deep trust between people and Pokémon were to come here with something linked to HO-OH... It may come down for such a person... | |
By the way... It was clear to me that SUICUNE took notice of your presence. Ecruteak’s legendary Pokémon are said to come to people only when they recognize their talents. Perhaps I should be more aggressive toward SUICUNE... Anyway, [Player], we will meet again! | |
Hmm... As far as I know, there is not a Pokémon like this in Johto... Just like Mr. Pokémon was saying over the phone... The legendary Pokémon could be... Oh, never mind. Anyway, I’m sure things will be happening around you, [Player]! You are making me all excited! I’ll give you a present for that. Please take it. | |
The legendary Pokémon: Suicune, Entei, and Raikou--which do you like best? Unlike Eusine, I don’t really have any interest in Suicune. So I’d have to say Entei... But I can’t leave out Raikou... Hmm... Guess I can’t make up my mind. | |
You know, I once saw Entei. I mean like up close. It was amazing. Entei looked me in the eyes. I’ll never forget its eyes. It was like it could see right through me, down into the depths of my heart... | |
Listen, listen! The Kimono Girls in Ecruteak City don’t just study dancing! They’re also working to bring back legendary Pokémon that haven’t appeared in front of humans since long, long ago. That’s amazing isn’t it? OK, I’ll call you later! | |
The real draw of fishing is that you never know what you’ll catch until you actually pull it up out of the water. Someday maybe I’ll pull up on the fishing Rod and there will be a legendary Pokémon on the other end of my line... Yeah, right. The chances of that happening are basically zero. For example, RAIKOU and the others, as they’re skipping around all over the place, maybe their feet would slip and they’d land in the sea... What do you think, could I accidentally catch RAIKOU while fishing? ...How silly, right? | |
How has it been? Did you see the legendary Pokémon? | |
Whirl Islands
GSC | HGSS |
---|---|
Have you heard of Whirl Islands? There are what they call Tidal Bells at its waterfall basin. They don’t make a single noise in crashing waves. There is only one way to make them ring. It is to obtain another Tidal Bell just like the ones at the waterfall basin. I went after it when I was young. But I never got one... | |
It was a dark and stormy night... I saw this giant Pokémon flying from the Whirl Islands. Feathers were scattering from its silver wings. | |
The waves are wild here. They tire you out as you swim. | |
I’m on my way to the Whirl Islands. I’m going exploring with friends. | |
Is that how you do it? | |
There’s supposed to be a big Pokémon deep beneath the Whirl Islands. I wonder what it could be? | |
A long time ago, the Whirl Islands used to be one large island. There were two countries fighting over the island back then. LUGIA, the guardian of the island, got upset and cast lightning bolts to tear the island into four pieces, then disappeared into the deep end of the waterfall basin... I will let you through if you bring the Silver Wing, which is said to have fallen from LUGIA. But the true challenge is whether LUGIA will appear in front of you. What LUGIA has longed for is the invisible trust between people and Pokémon... Or the person who can restore such a relationship... | |
LUGIA, the Pokémon of the island, hid itself deep in the end of the waterfall basin, and no one has seen it since... If anyone who could restore deep trust between people and Pokémon were to come here with something linked to LUGIA, it may show itself for such a person... | |
By the way... Have you heard of LUGIA? It is a Pokémon said to have lived around Whirl Islands once... ...Never mind. Just mad words of the old. | |
By the way... Have you heard of LUGIA? Er... Between Olivine and Cianwood are islands called Whirl Islands. There is a huge waterfall deep in the cave there. It is said that LUGIA rests in the deep end of the waterfall basin... You need a Silver Wing to reach the waterfall basin, I’ve heard... | |
There is a huge waterfall deep in the cave there. It is said that LUGIA rests in the deep end of the waterfall basin... You need a Silver Wing to reach the waterfall basin, I’ve heard... | |
Zuki: That’s right. This is where we welcome LUGIA. When the dance we practiced many days becomes one with the sound of the Tidal Bell we entrusted with you, then LUGIA shall come out from deep within the waterfall basin once again! | |
This is all we can do for you... What you do now is entirely up to you... | |
That is indeed LUGIA... The guardian of these islands from ancient times... So many have tried again and again, only to fail... [Player], your heart in complete harmony with the Tidal Bell has finally allowed it to appear... | |
[Player], don’t you see? LUGIA... It must have been waiting for someone like you all this time. Wouldn’t you agree...? | |
Oh, I almost forgot! According to my friend from Cianwood City, the legendary Pokémon will not appear if you just go down the cave at Whirl Islands with only that Silver Wing. Apparently there is something else you need... Or something like that. I wonder what it was... I can’t remember. | |

Many centuries ago,
the people of Ecruteak City built two towers, nine tiers each, reaching high up into the sky… The Bell Tower… and the Brass Tower. The towers attracted two Legendary Pokémon guardians. [Zuki] Ho-Oh, the guardian of the skies. [Ho-Oh roars] [Zuki] Lugia, guardian of the seas. [Lugia shrieks] Ho-Oh rested atop the Bell Tower. But the Brass Tower was the roost of the Legendary Lugia. The people would commune with the Pokémon, and a harmonious friendship grew between them… Until one fateful night, 150 years ago, as the tower was bathed in moonlight. [powers up] [shrieks] But then Lugia's peaceful rest was disturbed by the tumult of a lightning storm! [electricity powers up, crackles] [electricity crackling] [Sayo] The storm grew. The sky filled with lightning. The city shook with the sound of thunder… Until a tremendous thunderbolt came down and struck the tower. [explodes] Setting the lofty spire ablaze… [growls] [Miki] Until it became a mighty inferno! [gasps] [Miki] Then Lugia flapped its wings and summoned a powerful wind to extinguish the fire. But the fire threatened to spread to the rest of the city. So Lugia called for rain, and the skies above Ecruteak City answered. [Kuni] The rain battled with the fire… fighting back the flames until the fire was vanquished. [rumbling loudly] [gasps, groans] [whimpers meekly] [Naoko] After that dreadful night, a new day dawned with the morning sun. Overcome by the destruction the fire had wrought… Lugia fled… [Naoko] Hiding in the ocean's depths, awaiting the call of someone pure of heart before it can return to Ecruteak City. To this day, the ruins of the Burned Tower remain as a reminder of what was lost. And what will be again. |

Poltchageist |
---|
Welcome, children.
Tonight, we gather as the shadows fall to bring you an exciting, astonishing show. This is a mysterious and haunting tale about a Pokémon. Once upon a time, there was a tea master who dedicated his life to perfecting the art of the tea ceremony. And his pursuit of perfection bordered on obsession. "Do not lift the tea bowl so high!" "Do not step over the utensils!" "Do not speak while handling the utensils!” "What are you doing?!" Strictness soured his reputation. Eventually, not a soul would suffer his company. And without guests to entertain, his pursuits were meaningless. "Regret is a bitter sip…" As the tea master said this, he fainted from exhaustion. His short temper proved to be his undoing a truth he never realized. The master’s tea caddy passed from owner to owner. Until finally, after many years of neglect, the tea caddy started moving on its own... and suddenly transformed! The caddy then flew out of its storehouse! After some looking around, it noticed an ill-mannered woman and approached her. As the caddy sprinkled her with matcha for some reason, she sensed its presence and waved it away, breaking a teacup in the process. Let me tell you, that really teed it off! Its temper rivaled the old tea master’s! Later that night, the woman noticed her skin now possessed a peculiar glow! But the glow was shortlived, for trouble was brewing. The matcha steeped in her life-force, sapped some of her strength as it returned to the caddy. How terrifying! Then, it began sealing up cracks with its matcha! Starting with the broken phone… Then a power outlet, some headlights, even Tinkaton’s hammer! The tea caddy in this story is, in fact, the Grass- and Ghost-type Pokémon Poltchageist! People say the tea master’s regret still dwells in this caddy. Should you ever meet it, a proper greeting may save you from a bitter fate... “Nice tea meet’cha!” Ahem! Right, then. Now, in the land of Kitakami, parents tell their kids, "If you waste your food... "Poltchageist will sprinkle you with matcha!" Even flavoring things with matcha is forbidden there. Huh? Wasn’t this chipped? |
